Georgiy Giggle wrote:Alice Katsuko wrote:Also, just because one thing mirrors another, does not make it more intuitive. It will take all of two minutes for a player to figure out which is the shield layer, and which the hull for any reasonable HP display. The issue is not whether the locked target HP is intuitive to read so much as whether it is easy to read once you know what it represents. Is it hard for you just to see it one time and to remember for ever? Or your brain can't contain such a huge data? Your asinine tone is not noticed.
But I will answer your question nonetheless. HP in EVE is not a static number; it can change quite a bit in a very short time due to inbound damage and repairs, especially outside of PvE. A Logistics pilot has to track an average of five targets which may be in various states of damage and under various levels of fire, has to keep track of the fleet broadcast window and the watch list, and has to be prepared to unlock those five targets and swap to new ones in a matter of seconds. That Logistics pilot also has to maintain proper position to avoid being scragged by the enemy fleet, has to watch his cap, has to maintain the cap chain if in a Basilisk or a Guardian against jamming, has to ensure that his modules are properly counter-cycled and overheated. Among other various things. I'm sure some CCP devs have flown Logistics in big and hectic engagements, and can confirm the above.
In short, being able to read the HP of multiple targets is very important. The minute of thought a new player saves because the targeting icons mirror the active ship's HUD HP display, will be paid back by him a thousand-fold if he has to waste additional time getting the information he needs.
I am not criticizing for the sake of criticism. I very much like all of the other features and functionality that will be introduced in Retribution, even if I never expect use some of them, and even though some of them will undoubtedly further stress my machine. But I do not think that copying the current HP HUD in miniature is the best way to display target HP. A fair number of players appear to agree.
And I did offer an alternative system that seems to be fairly intuitive and easy to read. And I am curious if such a system was mocked up in internal tests and found in some regard to be deficient.
Personally, I don't care whether the final system uses bars, layers, or a squiggly line to display HP, so long as it is easy to read. From what I understand, the system currently on the test server is not the final version, and the final version will be easier to read. Or at least CCP has recognized that the current version of the target HP display is not as easy to read as would be ideal. So am looking forward to what happens between now and the release. |

Awesome, the UI changes look great as always. :)
I like the camera mode idea (haven't had a chance to see it yet), but if you're implementing that, any chance we can get a 'cinematic' camera mode while you're at it? Just a camera that pulls back and doesn't follow the ship so much, like in the trailers. So if you warp, for example, you actually see your ship warp out and disappear. Not necessary, but it'd be cool. |

I like the ticks in the icon damage readout. I would prefer that they be bigger though. How about 20 in total to represent 5% HP per tick? Since you can easily figure out where 50% is, you could at a glance more or less count up or down the other 10 to get an accurate HP % if you like. |

Why does CCP say this matches the current HUD? Last I checked all my windows were still square. And why is this being forced? I'm fine with the current system, please make this optional (but I know they won't). |

Is there an "Enable/disable camera tracking" hotkey?
Also nice changes. I really like the new targets. Higher resolution and much easier to compare to your own "bars" at a glance. |

TBA looks better as it was before when the circles were on all targets with the armor, shield, and structure status's inside the cross-hairs. Bad idea to make it look exactly like our main HP hub for every target without one in the cross-hairs. I would like to have that as a option to toggle to. |

Although these changes are great, the fact remains that brackets in general (which are required for competetive play) completely undermine the beatiful visuals this game has, especially in long range combat, as well as all combat involving frigates.
is there any chance the bracket system could ever be redisigned so as to display a coloured bracket outside the perimeter of the ship (basically square/circle scaled to fit) rather than directly overtop?
this would, for me, help with immersion, and also assist in people who are interested in the game understand what's happening during gameplay videos. |

There is not a default toggle key but you can assign any unused key on your keyboard to act as a toggle. IGÇÖve used my # key as that seems to be unused by any other key combination that I can find. Hey guys, it's great that your desire is to improve things. Not sure if this is 100% improvement though.
Red and white is definitely a good idea... better contrast over your lovely new backgrounds.
Circles do not tessellate, but squares do - so are you going to be taking up more screen space with these new targets? EVE's screen is cluttered enough as it is and screen real-estate is precious... always the focus of player attention (to arrange windows and other UI resources to maximise productivity)
Being able to move the notification dialogs around will be great. Nice one.
Tooltips being more informative is nice - but with one BIG, HUGE DEATHSTAR-SIZED BUT!!! They should not obscure our view of the game when we don't want them. I propose the following change to the General Settings options: The default state is to show the tooltips that you currently show, but after a time delay whose installation default is zero. (i.e. effectively no delay, which is what you have now) However, this can me modified, so that you're not continually dogged by needless tooltips popping up all over the screen as you move the pointer around. http://i.imgur.com/2hs1g.png
For hardcore users, there are no tooltips at all - unless they are holding down a SHIFT key. When SHIFT is held down, tooltips will pop up with zero delay: http://i.imgur.com/JAs2m.png
What do you think? Looks like you're making the tooltips physically cover up more screen space in Retribution, so controlling this is becoming more important than ever.

I've had a chance to test this on Buckingham and my overall feedback is positive:
+ The targets' shield/armor/hull condition is visible and identifiable, better than before for color impaired noobs like me. + There are ticks for what I presume are 25%/50%/75% of s/a/h which is nice, I don't have to hover anymore.
-While the log information on the HUD is informative and very detailed, I find it distracting. Shooting 4 rats generates a lot of information and it keeps scrolling on my HUD. I don't want to know what happens when you run an anom with 20 rats or are in a fleet battle with 100 people. Either let me move it or only show me some of it. -When moving the targets to the bottom of the screen, they can overlap with the effects the enemy ships (painters. disruptors etc). Is there a way to move those somewhere else? I'm trying to minimize mouse travel while keeping information on my screen. -The "safety button" is now overlapping with the lines for s/a/h when displaying that information on the HUD.

Crap. Forgot to comment on the automatic moving of the camera: Please allow us to disable that feature.
Having the camera view jerk around and change my point of view was damn confusing AND for a game where I need to double click in the direction in which I want my ship to travel this is very bad.
Being able to disable the 'focus camera on whatever your mouse may be over in the overview' is critical for those who manually micro-manage their ship's flight path. This is differentiated from those who use "Approach" or "Orbit" as their default means of on-grid navigation.

well, the new targets lock cool, but in think they are too large, i keep my targets right above fire every thing button (F1,F2,F3 ....) and I got trouble see range and things on target used (web, point ...). Maybe somehow put them on top of target, of include such option. |

I can not believe while the game is still making us run TEN YEAR OLD MISSIONS you would waste time on this crud.
We need more ways to find a quick fight between family activities... six hour missions just do not cut it.
Do you guys actually PLAY this game???
Sorry to rain on your parade, but improved targeting, blinkier lights and more color in the messages is not going to keep this game fresh and, well, playable.
Come on, devs! Develop a better game, quit polishing the knobs!!!
