Hello hello,
This is my 5th day playing EVE. I'm absolutely loving it thus far. I was wondering if i could get some help on some cheap but effective mining and hauling fits. I currently have a Bantam and the Badger Mrk II. I'd like to use those if possible but if anyone has any suggestions for any ship feel free to let me know. I've seen tons of fits since i started playing but obviously still being very new i don't really know what to make of most of the fits or what most of the parts even do.
I'm a Caldari if that means anything regarding fits. For the time being i'm going to be staying in mainly highsec areas but eventually and when i feel comfortable i would like to move on to lowsec mining and hauling.
Also, i'm always looking for new friends on EVE so feel free to add me if you'd like. I'd like to get as many experienced friends as possible hopefully experienced in the industry and how the economy works and the various ways you can make money in this game. But be warned becase i will probably ask a lot of questions haha. (I'm still learning ya know)
Thanks! ~Atlas Meridian
P.S Please be as detailed as possible, if possible. I'd like to know the why's, etc. |

If mining is what you like, then getting into a mining barge is a must. Train for a Retriever ASAP (they are the favored T1 Mining Barge due to their massive ore hold, which reduces trips needed to the station, therefore wasting less time). Use that until you can use a Hulk (T2 Mining Barge in the Exhumer class, favored for its bonus to mining yield) The Badger MK. II makes for an excellent hauler with expanded cargo hold II's and some cargo expansion rigs, so you are good on that front. When you begin lowsec mining, you may want to consider either the Bustard (super tough badger) or the Crane (cloaky badger) for hauling. If you are able to get into a Retriever before the winter expansion (which you should, as the train is fairly short), then you will also receive the new Mining Frigate skill at level 5 for free when the expansion is released, as that will become a prerequisite for the mining barges. Having that skill will grant you access to the new ORE mining frigate. Also, look for a dedicated mining and industrial corp. You will learn much quicker with them than you will on your own. Good luck! |

Liam's advice is good, although the Hulk is no longer the no-brainer among the Exhumers that it once was. That's a longer-term goal, so you'll have plenty of time to read up on the Hulk, Mackinaw, and Skiff and decide which one you're shooting for (the skills are the same in any case).
For short-term, as he said, set your sights toward a Retriever. You'll want to be in a Mining Barge when the expansion hits, as no combat ships will have mining bonuses anymore. |

Might also want to point out there's more ganking of miners in Gallente space than other places usually.
While a Badger is not a bad ship at all for hauling, if you find its hold too small train up Gallente Industrial to 5 to get access to the Iteron Mark 5, which can get ~36K m3 cargo with cargo expanders and t1 rigs (41K m3 with T2!). Other than that getting some refining skills can be useful as well... |

The traditional Caldari miner progression used to be Bantam -> T2 Mining Laser -> Osprey -> Retriever -> T2 Strip Miners -> Hulk (or other Exhumer).
With the new patch expected on December 4, the new progression will be Venture (stats may change) -> T2 Mining Laser -> Retriever -> T2 Strip Miners -> Hulk (or other Exhumer). The mining roles for the mining frigates and cruisers will be removed and a new ORE mining frigate named Venture will be introduced.
With the Bantam/Osprey (or other racial frigates/cruisers), you will want to fit cargo expanders in your low slot, a survey scanner in your mid slot and some combat drones to deal with belt rats (1 for the Bantam, 4 for the Osprey). |
