So for the last week or so my Corp has been doing alot of agent running missions while we are getting some things sorted out about our 0.0 access. Lvl 4 agent missions bore the living crap out of me so I decided I would go to a local .4 system and see if there were any pvpers about. After spending alot of time in Curse I was starting to miss having people constantly shooting at my ship.
So I loaded up the old Caracal with some Malkuths and a good webber and I went on my way up a few jumps from Isaziwa. Cruising around the belts I dont see any pirates or anything much until bingo! I see a nice destroyer whose blasting away some rats.
On my overview he is sitting roughly 300 km away at some weird rock formation. I quickly warp over there and lock him down. I launch my first volley and I get ready for this guys comorant to turn around and start blasting. Suddenly I realize he is not turning... In fact I don't he even knows I am here. My missles crash into his ship and I get a big explosion combined with a blinking kill mail. But instead of joy I have instant trepidation.
I notice his pod is just sitting there. The guy still has not figured out what has happened. And here is where my carebear conscience kicks in. I type in chat... "Purrajj,(name of pilot) warp out"
Next step, I check his bio... damn... two weeks in the noob corp... I felt so guilty... I'm not a pirate!
But was lamenting enough? Nope.
I sent him money to buy another ship and convinced to come back over to me so I could give him back his can. Some of us just are not cut out for being pirates.
However, I'll still wack the crap out of people in 0.0 or if you got a bounty on ya

well off contract i have started to try and pirate people. I try to lay off the n00b corp types if they havent been playing long. anywayz
There was 3 of sharks roaming about when we get a lvl4 mission runner in low sec 250k from a belt so i BM his can, we all warp in (we had a scorp and 2 ceptors) and killed him. While we was there we thought we'd patrol the belts. I spotted a 2 week starter corp in a destroyer hunting the belts but i said we should leave him alone
Next thing i know theres a dominix in another belt so we all warp in and engage and the newbie warps in like 15km from my ranis in a thrasher and starts locking me so i precede to blow the crap outta him (i dislike destroyers when im in my ceptor). Then all hell breaks lose and 4-5 other ships warp into the belt (friends of the raven we killed earlier) so we all run away.
Needless to say i got hatemail from the newbie saying im an ******** etc for killing his ship so i convod him and basically said "u locked me so i blew u up". he said he was just watching my ship and musta clicked the wrong icon etc. Fair play, accidents happen. chucked him a couple mil for a new ship and moved on.
I do have high morals and if i do something i deem outside of them i will sort it out. A 2 week old player could make a simple mistake and he did only lock me, never fired so refunding was the best thing to do imo

It's good to see people cover themselves if they accidentally shoot an innocent bystander :)
I too was helping a n00b friend startup in Kisogo a few weeks ago. It seems a new past-time of people is to warp to the training grounds, lock rookie ships (which promptly Eve auto-locks back) and laugh when the rookie clicks on F1. *cue a Ferox locking two Moas in-system and kindly asking them to leave*.

i went pirating once and had a similar experience.
was in 0.0 with a friend in cruisers. we saw a hauler and went for it, boom dead.
was an easy hit. felt kinda guilty.
then i was convoed by another player who said wed blown up the hauler. we denied it. he said it was his son wed blown up and hed seen it onb his computer
guilt kicked in and i paid foe a new hauler.
never pirated since.
piratings easy- i find attacking pirates harder , and more satisfying.

Suicide-killed a couple newbies in high sec with an alt, just to test concord response times and get rid of my inhibitions.
Didn't work. Ended up paying them for the loss and feeling like a ****.

Also teh Dad was a moron and started swearing at us so we left it at that.

I know that was war but also even if it was nto war we would still not refund anyone. ----------

Ive refunded new players now and again, depends what mood im in at the time. When I was a new player, I remember flying around in 0.1 - 0.4, not really knowing what I was doing. I then lost my BB to some gate rats (never seen cruisers spawn at a gate in low sec since), but luckily there was another BB for sale in the system. So I go buy the BB with my insurance, but cant afford to insure it. I check the market, and the heavy launchers I need are in another station, so I hit dock and sit back and chat to my gf. Next thing I know, boom, my BB explodes and theres lots of pretty light (torps) and I just sit there wondering what happened, then i look and see missiles coming at me from a raven sat at the station. Needless to say, i was in the cloning facility before I knew what was going on. Thanks to Zeroh from huff for teaching a noob a important lesson about low sec and insurance

Pirating in a battleship funded by a carebear alt is easy, but as far as I'm concerned NOT pirating.
Try to sustain being a pirate by piracy alone: now there's your challenge and your satisfaction.

Nothing wrong with having a conscience. We're all playing this game to have fun, and TBH laying off a newbie is in my opinion, a decent and fair thing to do. Especially when it would have been an easy kill anyway :)
Now, catching a 'several month' old player doing the same, well fair play :)

Definitely something to be said for having basic decency in the game, everyone has their own code of honor.
My corp hangs out in 0.0 a lot, and we dislike white squares. However, if by some magical chance we come across a true newbie (instead of an alt parade) I'll let him go. Same goes with people who are in corps that don't let their members know what is really going on (sometimes).
However, that's contingent upon how the other player acts as well. Local smack, while amusing, is a sure way to not get any sympathy from us. ---------------------------

Edited by: Ifni on 20/04/2005 15:09:53 I used to have a conscience. Back when the game soaked up all my time and i worked hard for all my stuff. Then I became a pirate. Ships were sitll accumulations of time but they were meant to blow up, in my hands anyway. I soon lost my morals and I blow up anything and everything I can.
Because of that stance, I have probably destroyed the hopes of many new players, but since most of my work is conducted in 0.0 they knew the risks when they clicked "ok" on the low sec warning popup.
Only once have I refunded a pilot for his ship loss and that was because the pilot had the guts to convo me and ask wtf I was doing. So I reimbursed for the loss of the tristan and a few mil to see them on their way.
People place too much emphasis on their belongings. For the non pvpers the game is mostly about wealth and greed. As such losing ships annoys them because it means they lose isk. For pvpers its usually about the fight itself. Interacting in a way where your skills come into a violent and bloody conflict to see who is the better pilot.
Everything I do, I do with this character. I bear the wrath of those I have destroyed and I don't hide behind an alt. I tell it how it is and stand by my decision whether it's right or wrong. You must remember though, since 0.0 is lawless, you can not apply any judgement or morals to it. It is a void. An empty place without rule. So whenever anyone passes judgement in 0.0 it is baseless. consciences can be left at the chokepoints along with the wreckage of ships.

My general rule is to leave alone <30 day old characters, subject to having the time to do show info and if the player is not in 0.0.
I will admit to a disturbing desire to blow up ridulously new characters flying battleships and then give them a "back in my day..." rant. But I owe that to being a grouchy old bastard. --------------

I also tried pirating with my m8.Kinda ironic as we warped to a belt looking to blow the crap outta this ferrox(i was in my caracal he was in a destroyer) we warp in both of us lcok but don;t fire to see if he warps:he locks joe and starts spamming missiles so i start to fire and he starts to hit me, then with me in strucure and the ferrox in strucure he warps out and concorde help him home. But imo even if i am at war with them and they are fighting in ospreys and stuff you feel bad after a while

Ya, conscia..en..ions... you know the word from the topic, it's a *****. I've had on several occasions feeling myself so guilty that I've even let pods go without them paying the ransom. Lately I've not been having this problem though, because when I go pirating in empire I roleplay an evil sadistic person and that person would never let anyone go without paying
Eyeshadow, pirating....

You killed me once, and I think that's what made me what I am today. A cold-hearted pierat. (pun intended)
I must say that getting shot down so simple by someone made me just want to become better. I worked my ISK back up through mining for a while, but it always kept bothering me. "I dont belong in a miner corp, I should leave." Then came an extortion war against the corp, my mates left for a "secondary" corporation to avoid the killing. I stayed and enjoyed the PVP, luring and trying to outsmart my enemy with millions more SP then me. After the war I joined up with Wings of Redemption, and that's been my path ever since.
Ifni, Im coming for you.

Now of course in terms of the question posed in this thread: I've displayed mercy ONCE. It was on a guy whose apoc I destroyed two or three days before and noted that it had a particular sheitty setup even though the guy had to be > 17 to 20 million SP. A few days later, on another character of mine, I came across his caracal in a complex and locked him and had him down to half structure up pops a convo box.
Normally that is a gimp tactic to do in the middle of a fight, but something told me differently with this guy. I mean his former apoc was setup HORRIBLY. So with the current fight still being my HAC vs. his caracal and he was beyond any point of hope of beating me, I decided to take the convo. Anyway, long story short, I let him go. I was obvious to me that this was someone who had come by this account from another person or family member or something. He didn't have a clue. So I let him go. *shrug* There wasn't an ounce of satisfaction or economic gain to be had from killing him a second time in the craptastic ship he was in anyway.

I have no guilt at all, or any exclusions, besides corpmates and trusted friends, from who I will kill if the opportunity arises.
I do however, take a different approach to piracy. I honor my word, if someone pays a ransom, they go free.
All pilots who are cought in the range of my warp scrambler will be treat with the upmost of respect, and dignity, and will have a fair opportunity to bargain for the safety of their vessel.
Also most pilots will feel more obliged to pay, when they realise, of the 330,000,000 isk i have made from ransoming, and salvaged modules sales since january 1st 107, 289,800,000 isk has been donated to new members of the pod pilot community, with the remainder being spent on repairs and insurance for my vessels.

I personally agree with ifni, ive killed nubs in 0.0 i generally lock them and see if they agress.
Happend the other night locked a kestral in my AF and he agressed on me so i did what had to be done.
but really if you see a ship pass you in 0.0 and there not on insta's you just have to shoot.
i generally kill anyone\anything within the bounds of the ship type im in and capable of killing. What can i say im addicted to the blinking kill mail. -------------------------------------------------------- Im Your Huckleberry ;-)
