Ahhhh... inspiration!
What is it about new space that is so wanted? The newness of it, that rush to get in and grab the goodies, to explore and create.
What messes it up? People succeed, and establish new SOV. back to square one.
What about WH space? It blocks actual full penetration by players, possibly intending eliminating the ability to fully establish SOV.
What is it we seem to want?
Doom Space
Explorers have encountered a wormhole connecting to a set of systems near a pulsar cluster. This cluster periodically is blasted by intense waves of energy, that spill over into these neighboring systems. This blast of energy has the effect of blasting all technology out of existence, not to mention life forms not native to the area who have no resistance to it. Nothing built here by human hand can survive the blast wave.
There is rumored to be a large group of rogue drones that is "riding" this wave effect, and routinely show up in these systems to farm resources from here. Pilots encountering rogue drones report that they show up in great numbers, clear resources, then escape before the blast. Watching their behavior often gives the warning before a blast event occurs. That is, when the drones don't turn on the pilots in order to harvest the ships instead of the resources.
The drones left behind limited range devices, (embedded in protective ore bearing rock), that act as cyno beacons. Because of the crude durability needed for these to survive a blast wave, they can be locked onto by anyone within the beacon's range. (A special module may be needed to be activated in order to divert a jump gate so it orients to this instead, costing a fitting slot) Optionally, the drones may have left behind reinforced accel gates to link the systems.
Continually renewing space. Be it a week , a day, or even a couple of weeks.... noone can keep it forever, and it is empty after the next blast again. Cloaking being on a ten minute manual cycle timer? (Author: Bree Okanata) Fine. As long as there is a ten minute timer for being docked in a station. Also, you can't stop moving in the game. Just add in a way so every ten minutes you are randomly warped to the nearest other player. Keeps people from going AFK. |

Side note, in case it comes up as a potential loophole:
Any ships logged off in these systems get popped by the effect when it occurs, so the pilot would find themselves logging into a med clone.
Don't log off in this space if you can't relocate back to regular space before a blast hits. Cloaking being on a ten minute manual cycle timer? (Author: Bree Okanata) Fine. Soooo... people get to explore it over and over?
Obviously it will get mapped out quickly.
So it's a rush in to grab resources? Will people actually want to do this repeatedly?
On the positive side, for a well organized team it could be an oportunity that would not normally be present, current SOV deciding who can have what not changing that much.
People would be blowing each other up for the chance to get in first... ohhhh.
Put some kind of gates in. Something that lets people recover the ships they send in. Not everyone has disposable ships that they want to sacrifice without a fight. |

Put some kind of gates in. Something that lets people recover the ships they send in. Not everyone has disposable ships that they want to sacrifice without a fight. Most mining and harvesting is a rush to grab resources.
This would create a need to work harder for them, not just safely from the protection of SOV space or high security.
Competitions could form around it, and the rewards could be impressive. Cloaking being on a ten minute manual cycle timer? (Author: Bree Okanata) Fine. Also, the depth of the system network should require significant effort and travel time to reach the farthest inside from safety. These deepest systems will be attractive, because they will be the least picked over. Quite possibly, they will have slightly better rewards.
The pathing and connections need to be static, unlike wormholes. (However, the non-presence of Local Chat except in delayed mode would make sense here the same as in wormholes, no Concord infrastructure)
The opportunity to set ambushes as well as the rush to get ships there to harvest resources should allow for exciting races.
Possibly, the blast wave effect will go system by system, allowing the edge systems a chance to warn the rest. Cloaking being on a ten minute manual cycle timer? (Author: Bree Okanata) Fine. The PvE content will be highly at risk, since the PvP side will know they are racing out to get rewards.
Fits to maximize resource harvesting, as well as attacking those, will be likely. Cloaking being on a ten minute manual cycle timer? (Author: Bree Okanata) Fine. I'm not sure about the details, but i like the general concept.
+1 100M ISK per hour is about $3US an hour. -áIt's more efficient to work at starbucks.-á Playing the game doesn't advance skills, kinda like ProgressQuest. |

No gate camp wants a superior force jumping in, especially if local is delayed. Standard procedure being hold gate cloak till fleet prepped, a gate camp could quite easily find itself overwhelmed.
With the higher occurance of large groups that this would inspire, any gate camp would have higher risk in these areas.
I think it would be a bigger gamble than ever on both sides. Cloaking being on a ten minute manual cycle timer? (Author: Bree Okanata) Fine. Pilots must note drone behavior, or be aware of edge systems falling to a blast wave, to know when to expect these.
Being unpredictable lets pilots gamble on staying longer than they should. Cloaking being on a ten minute manual cycle timer? (Author: Bree Okanata) Fine.
