I'm currently on a 14 day trial, just a couple days in.
Most of the things I've read suggest that a player who intends to stick around a while is best off grabbing the Learning skills first.
As a Miner, I grabbed Frigate 2 skill and picked up an Imicus, a pair of Miner 1s, and so forth. But I find that mining Scordite in a 0.9 is all I can do at this point, while I wait for my Learning skills to train.
This isn't really all that fun. Is it really necessary to crank out Learning skills for days and weeks?

You don't have to, but it's a good idea if you plan on playing for more than a couple months. The learning skills set a very good foundation for your other skills, allowing you to learn those at an accellerated rate. But if you're gonna play for a month or two, heck, go for whatever you want. ---------- I'm not going to protect you from your own stupidity. I'm a space pirate, not your mother. |

Well it's a good idea to get all the learning skills to level 4, it's like owning a full set of +4 implants.
The earlier you do it, the quicker you'll get the rest of your skills.
You can completely skip learning and just go train what you want, but when you get to that month-long level 5 skill, you're gonna wish you had the stats to knock 4 days off.
I think someone calculated that it takes 3 years to recover the time of training all the learning skills to level 5, but level 4 is definitely worth it, you recover that time in a few months.
My advice to you is, bite the bullet, train all the learning to level 4, it'll take about a week.
I would NOT train anything to level 5, unless you happened to gimp one of your stats and later realize you need it. In that case I would raise that 1 stat to level 5, and then get its advanced version to level 4.

I would Highly recomend it if you are planning on staying for anything longer than a month. Even though I say that, I am forcing you to get them to level 1 in your trial. And training them to 5 if you do stick around is a VERY good idea. You will get that time back in no time flat. Then you can get the advanced skills to 3 and increase them further. Now what Sleazy said is complete bs. Training the Advanced learning to 5 is a waste but not the normal ones. If you do train the advanced to 5, it would take a year and a half to recover.

I have am a newb myslelf, only been playing for a month and I would say that you dont need to get them to 5 not even 4 really but its no biggie to get them to 3 and it does make a diff on how you train you other skills. If after the trial you continue to play you can raise them some more then.
P.S. Things get better and better as you open up the EVE world. Dont let the first 14 days fool you.

get learning skills to 4, get into a BS, then train them to 5 and the ADV to 4 as well, this way you can have fun, make money, and do learning at the same time (\_/) (O.o) (> <) This is Bunny. Copy Bunny into your signature to help him on his way to world domination. |

For example, depending on how long you fancy staying for, as a 14 month old character who has recently completed a very long skill, training all learning upto 5 then all advanced learning upto 4, knocked 12 days off the skill I wanted to train.

Edited by: Kordesh on 21/04/2005 12:44:01 See, I was told to get Learning to lvl 4, then all the basic learning skills to lvl 5 and adv lvl 4 (with the exception of charisma) and then getting "Learning" 5 at some point *there was an order to it I'm not specifying the order* Personally, I'd be interested as to what exactly I should do as well. I'm just about to finish my memory learning skill at lvl 5 and work on the adv version. ------------------------------------------- "What's it like being a turtle?" The most efficient way of playing is to train the learning and advanced learning skills first. In reality this is not the most fun way. There is more to this game than simple skill points! Personally I would get the normal ones to 3 then inter-mix the longer ones with some skills that allow you to do some fun things - just for sanity !

Yeah. 9 days of training memory 5 has driven me mad....
I "took a vacation" for one day and did some other minor stuff. ------------------------------------------- "What's it like being a turtle?" "It's a lot like being a walking house that eats lettuce." (Hurray temp sig!) |

I afk mined for 3 months when i started.
First I trained up enough to get my industrial ship. Then I started my loooong afk mining experience. Meanwhile, I trained up all the first level learning skills to 5, then I trained up all the second teir of learning skills to level 4. Then I went and got a bunch of cheap +1 implants and have been learning all the other skills I wanted, which have been going VERY fast.
I suggest that everyone does this. Yes, afk mining can be boring. You could easily replace it with doing low level missions, but you might be tempted to train non-learning stuff if you do.

Personally, I'd say get all the basic learning skills and train at least the first few levels - levels 1 and 2 are nice and quick, and give the biggest bang for your training buck. Then train up just enough to get you a ship and modules that can do something interesting - getting the skills for a decent frig with passable tech 1 fittings doesn't take that long, and neither does a hauler. One of the quickest ways to make good cash early on is to get yourself into a mining corp and pimp yourself out as their hauler.
At this point, unless you have a rich benefactor, you'll be looking at a little while to save the isk for a cruiser anyway. Either way, you should have yourself enough "practical" skills to do basic activities and have a bit of fun. During this period, train the learning skills up like mad, and keep doing it till you get completely bored of doing whatever you're doing. At this point, upgrade your skills for the cruiser you can probably afford by now. Once you have a functional cruiser setup trained, go back to the learning skills.
By hopping up the skill-tree like this, you'll get enough skills to have fun, but keep the learning skills moving along nicely, so by the time you get into a battleship, you should have the advanced learning skills to 4, and whizz through things like gunnery V that you need to use the battleship properly.

Actually, I managed to aquire the skills to fly and the isk to buy a Rupture cruiser within my 14day trial. I had the medium guns to go with it as well. After that I began on my learning skills however and progress on everything but those has been slow/paused ------------------------------------------- "What's it like being a turtle?" ROFL bold text understatement of the century.
It "might" be boring to afk mine! Of course its boring, you're afk!
