1. You can only play a game for so long, sure you can take a break here and there, but the novelty effect fades away quickly.
2. A lot of eve players are getting older and the older you get, the more RL problems you will face(health, money, family, etc) that comes to the point where you don't have much time to spare as you once used to a few years ago.
3. EVE's subscription has a big reliance on loyal fanbase, but as in the previous reason no fanbase is immune to RL happenings going on and issues that everyone must face. Reason #2 is one of the hurting factors for subscription of EVE.
4. While the fixes to the game and changes are great, the expansion still remains much to be desired. I realize that CCP has a lot of work to do in fixing old problems and trying to renovate things, but these are things IMO that should come fixed with a patch and not an expansion. I know CCP is not a big company that can afford to do patches every week or everyday, but the time it takes to change things are slow and painful and causes many to lose patience.
5. PLEX prices are increasing making it a high barrier of entry for nonsubscription players. Sure 13 dollars a month is not much, but if you consider multiaccounts and years, it surely adds up. I personally pay with subscription with some plex, but I have cut the number of accounts I had down from 6 to 3 over the previous year and a half.
EVE online does require a good amount of time commitment that becomes harder and harder to do as you get older until the day you get old and retire.
Now what Can CCP do about it? Not much other than change the system of how they make changes and introduce things. Waiting twice a year for changes to come to a game can be a bit discouraging.

EVE average player numbers have stopped growing after 2011 and is on a decline. Now the number of players should stay consistent or be growing in numbers as time passes, but that isn't to case as you can see in the graph. |

The only thing I see from that graph is the horrible downward spike of Incarna and that around this time every year there are less people online due to finals and holidays which then spikes after the new expansion is released.
We get this thread every year but usually they blame it on the goons or gankers or what have you. What are you whining about, plex price? Lol. |

Can't read Eve-offline.net?
Someone pointed out in another thread that player activity has dropped 25% since Jan 2010. Weekly average was 36k at the peak, it's now down to 27k...
Perhaps your the one who should buy a clue?

So you don't equate online activity with subscriptions? That's new.......

Online activity isn't directly associated with Subs. Myself, I have two Accounts, neither of which is online more than a couple hours a week at most. Probably not more than a couple hours a month on average for well over a year. zubzubzubzubzubzubzubzub |

People like this crack me up, why would anyone need 6 accounts? If you can't enjoy yourself with one or two you're doing it wrong.

1. That's the beauty of a sandbox design rather than a themepark one: players provide novelty every day without the devs having to inject novel content all the time.
2. Really? My experience is that, as I've gotten older, I've had more money at my disposal and I've had more actual free time (not to mention being more choosy about what I spend my time on).
3. GǪis just more of 2.
4. Interestingly, since the players are the content, there has been this long-standing complaint that they're not fixing enough stuff, which leaves the players with less sand and buckets and spades to play with compared to what's actually in the game. Making stuff actually work can easily add just as much to the game as just adding stuff. Contrast this with probably the largest expansion ever GÇö Apocrypha GÇö which also broke more things than ever.
5. As luck would have it, that increased amount of money you get as you grow older rather makes this a smaller and smaller problem as time goes by.
By the way, the current downwards slope in online numbers is pretty standard for this time of year and we're way ahead of where we were last year during the same period. GÇ£If you're not willing to fight for what you have in GëívGëí you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.GÇ¥
