This has happened to me a couple of times while fighting NPCs and I don't know what exactly happened.
Here's the most recent situation: I take my breacher into a level 1 - training - deadspace area. I move around the pack of NPCs, keeping them at 24km while I pound them all to death with missles. I move really fast and never get hit.
I get to the third level and fight some tougher guys (big red crosses) - extreme danger in their info panels - but I take down several of them without taking a scratch - I'm still "training" them behind me at 24km. No problem.
Then something goes wrong! All of a sudden they're all on top of me! I can't even warp away in time!
My question is: is some particular NPC in the pack using some kind of device against me? If so, how can I tell what it is and how can I counter it? There is precious little feedback from the game itself. One second I'm fine and the next second I'm dead... no visible reason why...
I don't mind getting splashed, but how can I learn from my mistakes if I don't know what they are?

My guess is that they MWD'd up to you. NPCs are allowed to do this in DS. You possibly also had lag that made you think they were farther away than they actually were. If you know the specific names of the NPCs, maybe someone can tell you their tactics. Also, they could have had missiles that suddenly hit. If they have mediums, those can pound away on a frig easily.
You may have also wandered into sentry range. Those can hit pretty hard too.

I have had something like this happen to me also.
I was running and using "keep range at" set to 25K. Their missles ran out of power and could not catch me, while mine was pounding the enemies to pieces. (fighting the 12K and 14K angel pirates in a Vigil)
Kept this up for a good long time... (15-20 minutes???) all of a sudden my ship stopped, (but still showed the streak of my engine trail) and they flew right up to me and started pounding me. one of the pirates even flew past me and kept going.
At that point I hit the auto warp to jump to the gate to the next system (previously set for just that sort of emergency) :)
It appeared to me what happen is I ran and hit the edge of the map/zone/boundry for the area. ??? I dont know if thats what happened, or if there is one, but after that, I stopped straight line running, and started try to make big circles around the pirate cluster instead.

Thanks, guys
Eagle - It sounds like you and I had the same experience then. I can't believe they put an invisible "wall" in space but I guess it makes sense if it's an "instance" type area.
So I guess there's no kind of in-game feedback if an enemy uses a "root" or "snare" device on your ship? No icons pop up showing a EW device being used against you? That's pretty harsh...

If there using a "Webbing Device" against you, you normally see like a "creamy blue wavey" effect around your ship. If your not sure what it is, find a friend who can use a "webbing" device and see its effects. ______________

Name : MWD - Micro Warp Drive Module Desc : This allows a ship to move very fast. Most all cases is above 1000 m/s. NPC's carry them.
If you're only 24KM and not pushing high speeds. That NPC will dart up to you real quick and start blasting you. A lot of NPC's move really fast now and need too. Almost in all cases when a NPC is moving above 500 m/s they have close range guns on them. So this could be an advantage for you.
Prevention : You can do 1 of 3 things or even all.
1 - Use a Webifier Module (Reduces there speed by -75% when in range of 10KM) 2 - Use a Micro Warp Drive yourself to move out of there range. 3 - Setup for close range combat. (Not recommended)

Or get a bigger ship..
OK, you should orbit them at 25k(not 24k), and keep an eye on the distances on your overview..
A Breacher does not have very good shield/Armor anyway.. |

Deadspace areas are not instanced, though they are strange in some ways.
You can try going into your EVE folder, then Capture, then Gamelogs and looking for the log of that encounter. It could show if you started getting hit by missiles or sentries or some such. |

Cheim,
Thank you so much for your info on the game logs! I went there and found out some of what happened! I was pounded to death by missles, although I'm not sure exactly how... It was a long, running fight and I was way ahead of them the whole time, their missles couln't have caught up to me, but somehow they did. Maybe it was lag?
Thanks for all the help, everyone!
Those game logs are great! I wonder - do they indicate when your ship is hit by a "webber" or some other kind of EW device as well?

Glad I could help.

Let's see. I'm fairly confident they do not record if you get webbed (fortunately the graphical effect for webbing is eminently noticeable). They do record if someone tries to warp scramble you. I think, but I'm not sure, they do not show if someone jams / sensor damps / target paints / tracking disrupts you.
A little note on the logs: If there are many events the log records happening simultaneously, the log won't catch all of them. So, for instance, you could be shot many more times than the log shows. Just a tip for future log perusing. |

It sounds like they were in cruisers, since you say they were "big red crosses," so they were using heavy missiles which are faster than lights and have a much longer range, almost twice lights'. So unless you were going over 1200m/s, which is hard w/o an MWD in a regular frig, you wouldn't have outrun them, just delayed their impact. And it doesn't really take that many heavies to destroy a brittle frig like the breacher.

its possible there were lots of missiles chasing you, with you outrunning them (although, without AB/MWD i doubt you could outrun them for long...), and then you got webbed so they all hit you. to be honest though, its more likely they just caught up - they go faster than a player in deadspace will go.
