I'm currently on a mission that requires me to kill rats.I'm in a punisher fitted with dual light beam lasers I and multi freq lenses and i'm being attacked by a dozen of missile rats(pthi wreckers or something along those lines) and i find it impossible to survive, they drop me in seconds even though i stay at my weapon's maximum fall off.
Any advice on what should i do?
Also a t1 fit for a punisher running missions would be greately appreciated. |

Those rats will be dealing mainly Kinetic damage, with a side order of Thermal. Thus you will want to tank specifically for those two damage types.
As far as dealing damage goes, you're best tuning your weapon for the range you wish to engage at, rather than engaging at your weapons' maximum range.
What's the mission you're running?

Get some friends to help you will probably be what you need to do. CCP has changed the mission rat AI so they all attack at once, eat up drones, and switch targets, so missions where you could enter and then only aggress small groups are much tougher now.
If you're being attacked with missiles, range doesn't matter once you're in range. Unlike guns, they track you equally well. What matters is your speed (the faster the better), and your signature radius (smaller better). So fit 1MN afterburner, and don't fit shield extenders (shouldn't be a problem for the punisher as it's an armor ship).
Punisher gets resistances and has many low slots for an armor tank. Try to fit 200 mm or 400 mm Armor Plates (to give you more HP's), the best Small Armor Repairer you can find, and Energized or Armor Hardeners to raise your resistances to the type of missile used against you.
If you look at Pithi Wreckers information, you can see that they shoot thermal rockets and their lowest resists are in thermal. Buff up your armor thermal resistances, and the good news is that your lasers do thermal damage already. Get into optimal of your pulse lasers for max damage, and take them out, and your afterburner should allow you to beat their max speed of 440 m/s and get out of the 6-10 km range of rockets if you get in trouble. But you want to maintain your afterburned speed as much as possible as it reduces missile damage.

Just be aware that fitting plates on a mission ship isn't usually a good thing. Plates mean more buffer, but a weaker tank. You get more hitpoints by fitting them, but they also slow you down and mean you have one less slot to use for resistance. Additional resistance module decreases all incoming damage by a certain percentage(over 50% with a tech2 active resist hardener), which makes tanking the damage with a repair module much easier. The difference is big enough, that most mission ships don't use buffer tanks. |

If you've got the afterburner to dictate range, and a decent tank, yeah, you want the short range bigger damage guns with the bigger damage / shorter range crystals or ammo. Also fit all available slots with cap rechargers or cap power relays to create more juice for your tank and lasers. |

This
For missions: Resist tank > Buffer tanks
Buffers are good for PvP or Incursions. For normal missions a good resist tank (Tank according to damage done by rats in your mission) will negate most incoming damage which will mean your repper can keep up.
The 2nd benefit is that resist tanks don't slow you down where as buffer (plates) does. Slower speed equals harder hitting missiles and easier tracking by enemy guns. Old look Corporation recruitment thread Corporation Website |

You guys are right, but if they "drop him in seconds" I figured he needed a buffer to at least have a little time to react.
Also, Punisher already has resists, adding a resist probably won't do as much as halving the incoming damage, whereas an oversized plate will double his armor HP. Yeah he won't be able to repair, but the NPC's all aggro (which may or may not be a bug) so the idea becomes to kill a few of them then bug out to repair. Which you need a buffer for.
Anyway, it's kinda moot since he managed to beat that mission. |

When your doing missions you need to have 2 things covered
DPS Tank
Drones & Mercenaries are typically more omni-biased but sometimes follow the pirate standard and each Pirate faction has a resistance weakness, and a damage type(s)
some of the data is a little out of date, but www.eve-survival.org is still worth a read
if your tank (shield or armour) disappears really quickly, you most likely have the wrong resistance model, sometimes its just because your tank is too small aswell (but this isnt as common) Another old asset but still worth reading --> Tanking 101
An active tank relies on capacitor A passive tank relies on regen rate
A buffer tank is for PvP ... |

With enough skills in the right places, and the appropriate modules, it is quite possible to fit a Punisher to remain capacitor-stable even when running a Small Armor Repairer. The trick is to forget the lasers and fit it with blasters instead. Yes, yes I understand no racial weapon bonus but so what? Blasters do great damage even without any bonus, and use hardly any capacitor (which is what allows it to remain capacitor-stable).
Fitted with enough armor and resistance plating in the low-slots, along side your armor repair module, and using capacitor boosters in the middle slots (and more armor resistance rigs just for good measure) you can turn that Punisher into one of the most indestructible little frigates out there.
