Do any corporations that you know of run something like this? I am a new player so I really don't grasp much, but is this possible in Eve? I was thinking about it on my drive home and I quite like the idea of pvper's patrolling an area and killing anyone that doesn't pay or anyone that threatens those who have paid.
Probably not in the right forum so I apologize in advance. I also apologize if this is a dumb question. |

Isnt that lowsec? Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings? |

I was under the impression most of low security space is a FFA. Kind of like an area with more predators than prey with only small forays by "Anti-Pirates". My idea was more of Pirates that protect system locals for a fee, while preying on anyone else. |

That actually sounds like nul-sec. People pay corps to use their systems for mining, ratting, etc. |

Not that your idea couldn't happen. The only thing is lowsec is kinda like the wild west. The 'locals' are pirates and pvpers who blow up anything that moves. They wouldn't pay other pirates for protection.
If a pirate corp did take solid control of a lowsec system, I imagine they could entice missioners and industrial players to come and enjoy the system for a price. But at the same time, lowsec is hard to control. |

mainly gates that cant be bubbled, some alliances can lock out certain regions by bubbling a few gates. ofc blops and offlined alts cant still light cynos inside, but that gives plenty of warning.
anyway, yeah i guess i share the feeling that lowsec is just wasted space, people just don't do anything but kill each other, not much room for development. not that there are many riches in lowsec anyway. |

Oh, I guess that makes sense enabling them to control the entries and exits would make things a lot easier.
Once I figure out how to be self-sufficient I'll be making a jump into at least low security as the crafting portion of Eve gives me the impression that it is math skill intensive and seems to require more free market savviness than I possess.
Thank you everyone that responded for taking the time. Knowing is half the battle and all that. |

This definitely happens. There are several Russian alliances that claim certain low sec areas as "theirs" and will provide protection for a price. Though due to game mechanics protection boils down to them setting you blue, allowing you to anchor a POS and them responding to defend you POS if attacked. They can't protect you in all things just due to the nature of the game. |

I played another game where we 'taxed' all who entered. And gave them 24 hours to make ISK, interact with agents, whatever. It was a really fun format, but it isn't that easy to enforce in EVE. |

It does seem like a fun dynamic, hell I'd be someone taxed and I think it would still be kinda cool. Who knows you can be anything in Eve maybe I'll get to do it one day haha....Thanks a lot for taking the time to indulge me. |

You have just summarized nullsec in it's entirety.

yes,
many pirate corps will have their "turf" or hunting grounds, and may enter into an agreement with individual mission runners or corporations for safe passage.
ID had an arrangement with the hauler wing of oxide to allow them through whenever they wanted, in exchange for free battleships and a low price per week, even klepto had a few players that really really wanted to run missions in that part of lowsec, and accepted payments.
otherwise what you are describing is the good old fashioned kill and ransom |

This is possible in maybe a dead end lowsec.
What you would do is camp a gate and leave scouts a couple systems out, then have people pay you to mine/rat the space and have an early detection system... maybe an intel channel or something.
Never heard of it being done but its possible. |

The OPs idea is basically what renting in nullsec amounts to. The large sov holding alliances (who are NBSI) allow carebear alliances to inhabit their space and do their carebear thing for a fee. There is no difference between that and a protection racket, as the renters would otherwise be targets. |
