One of the things that has bugged me about Eve is anytime I ask for my ship to orbit something.
Typically the ship will:
a) bolt off in the exact wrong direction I want it to go b) make a bee line for the outer limit of the orbit (so if I'm at 50km it will make a beeline for 30km before it starts to orbit) c) randomly pick a direction to orbit
Is there not anyway we can get more control over this?
If I were actually in control of the ship, I definitely wouldn't be making a beeline for my orbital distance but rather be coming at it based on a spiral or arcing pattern. I also would generally be in control of which direction my ship is, or should be, pointed in once it starts to orbit something rather than having to wait until the ship decides that its going to head directly into the 29 battlecruisers I was just attempting to put some distance between rather than orbit at a distance I can get some control over the situation.
I'm not looking for doing the whole "Mr. Data - Execute pattern Delta-Omega-1" but some additional control would be nice.

double click in space . . . your ship will head in that direction . . .
you can use this to put yourself in the exact orbit you want to be in. |

Feature exists.
People already do this in PVP all the time. Learn to doubleclick. |

There is not 'automatic' option for this. Manual flight will give you precision when you learn how to do it well. If you want automation, you will just have to put up with a ******** hamster piloting your ship. MODULAR DRONES

I agree @OP. The astronautics AI only has like 4 commands, and it executes all of them with the intelligence of a wet brick. Double clicking in the meantime is slow, clunky, inaccurate, and highly limited given human abilities and camera/scene awareness. Space games should have spaceflight AI and SHINES, not spaceflight AI that hides in a corner and hopes nobody realizes how silly it is.
Here is my suggested solution: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=2275573#post2275573
This would allow people to do exactly the sort of high-tech, maximum efficiency spiraling approaches, etc. Along with anything else you wanted to be able to do physics-wise, without having to wait for CCP to code it for you. |

Watch the new BS: Galactica for why obviously. Advanced AI would make it easier for rogue drone code to infiltrate it and subvert our systems. Turning our own ships against us. So they use the dumbest AI possible in order to make this risk negligible. |

That's probably what happened to the Jovians. "Psychological fatal disease" is just code for "They're getting seduced by Cylons" |
