As a new capsuleer, we almost always go through the new player experience tutorial and then ask ourselves, "what's next? I want to blast everything I come across!" EVE has quite a number of ships that a new or young capsuleer could fly... but what should he or she choose? What ships do you recommend, for what purpose, and why is that ship better than any other? The Mimir is my favorite, because it looks awesome, though it is basically expensive bling.
For newer players I would recommend the Myrmidon. They aren't as powerful as they were years back, but they're versatile and cheap enough when you're just starting out and no longer want to fly T1 cruisers or frigates.

If a new pilot is interested in combat, then I recommend working toward their race's Battlecruiser, stopping off at cruisers along the way to help make ISK. It can be effectively trained for within a month (although it takes several months of training to perfect all the skills) and is an investment that can be applied to nearly all aspects of the game. BC's are used in nearly all forms of PVP or PVE combat- you can never go wrong by training one. |

For new players definately the stealth bomber of whatever race they are. Hits BC and larger hard, cloaks, and is always useful as a scout. |

No contest - it's got to be the Rifter. It's quick and easy to train for, and so good that experienced pilots can work miracles in them. Plus of course the Jaguar and Wolf are IMO the best assault frigates out there. It's just an excellent ship that everybody should fly, even if they have to cross-train.
the Kestrel comes a close second, mind you. An in-character blog and a video: http://verinsjournal.blogspot.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tu1mbsgo738

it depends on the race your flying, what you want todo, and the setting of your skills, there is no 'this ship is a total must', because if you want to do pvp you probably start with an interceptor, if you like scouting you go for a covert ops, and if you like mining, well no clue, but its none of those above.
the important thing that you should teach new guys is that they should decide what role they want to play at the start, and to stick with it for a while, so they can focus on getting proper skills. |

It depends, there are so many different fun things to do that I've suggested for newer players and most of the activities use different ships. The most recent time this happened (last night), I suggested that the player train for Stealth Bombers for ninja-ratting in nullsec, which is always good fun.
I know there will be tons of different suggestions, so I won't try to cover them, but I'll toss in "Stealth Bombers" as my 0.02 ISK for something fairly easy to get into that's lots of fun. |

The Omen is a nice boat. Medium T2 Lasers are quick to learn and the ship does good damage while still being very cheap. No drones means good for pvp and no separate drone skills required.
Next step is Omen Navy which offers a lot of improvement over the Omen with no new skills required except some for the drones, and is affordable and very cost-effective for a faction boat.
Nowadays the Omen doesn't even look like **** anymore. The old look prevented me from using it myself as a new player |

The Drake is the way to go!
It's bonuses and ability to tank lend itself greatly to teaching new pilots how to properly train skills. With the drake, you have a GREAT incentive to train an entire skill category: Engineering, with the exception of the capital ship skills. Doing so will make the character a useful pilot any time any where in the future, for shield tanked ships in general.
The ship is also not terribly expensive to purchase and fit, allowing newer pilots to get into it early on and not feel like quitting should they lose one in a mission. |

The Caldari Caracal and Amarr Maller / Omen are great cruisers for running agent missions. If you are looking to do level 2 missions, look no further. Both of these ships can tank rather well and put out enough damage to get the job done. |

As a noob has to set goals, I'd recommend training all the skills needed to pilot a Cerebus well. That includes all the mechanic skills needed to tank it well.
There are many ships that one can pilot working their way to a Cerebus. The experienced gained will serve them well. I'd also not worry about faction mods at that level. T2 mods are far more cost effective.
In the hands of a well trained pilot, a Cerebus is a cost effective ship that can solo level 4 missions with ease. |

The first week your best friend will be your racial destroyer. These really chew through the new player missions, after this you should be training towards battlecruisers.
Remember take your time it will take a good month before you can fly a reasonable BC the modules are just as important as the ship skills, if not more so! |

Loaded Question here. PvE? PvP? Meh, I'll answer both.
I'd recommend your racial Tier 2 battlecruiser (Drake/Harbinger/Hurricane/Myrmidon) as your first real missioning boat. For PvP, start small. Frigate/cruiser as they're fairly inexpensive and when properly fitted and flown, are deadly all the way from solo to large fleet. I personally prefer the Rifter and the Vexor over any other ships in their respective classes.
When you have the cash flow/skills you can start using a Battlecruiser for PvP, and step up for a HAC or T3 or BS for missions.
The thing to remember about PvP is there is no 'best'. Every ship has different strengths and weaknesses, and there is always a foil to your ship and it's fit.

My personal experience as a newbie who jumped right into FW after a few days of play, then into 0.0 after a couple weeks is that sticking to frigates until you learn exactly what's what in PvP is invaluable.
Of course, also train to BCs or even BSs for ISK-earning, but as far as day to day pvp, a frigate such as the Rifter, Merlin, Punisher, or Tristan is really the way to go (Incursus works too for Gallente pilots without rockets, but it's a bit paper-thin). They're cheap so you can afford to lose piles and piles of them and they have the combat capabilities to kill equal sized and bigger ships that are being flown by idiots. They are also almost always welcome in pvp fleets, since there can never be too much tackle.
Also as a bonus you get to avoid really stupid lossmails when you do things like trying to kill a tackler with arty when he already tackled you and is orbiting you at 500m, or worse, when you jump from Ossogur into Amamake in your shiny new battlecruiser that cost you your whole wallet.
I've got a whole blog post on this if you're interested. Keep in mind I wrote that back when I was a few months old, though. |

Combat (PvE or PvP) pilots should aim to fly the Drake or Hurricane, and fly it well. These ships will serve you well for the remainder of your capsuleer career; don't bother with battleships 'till you have mastered one of these. For the Hurricane, the chain is Rifter->Stabber->Hurricane. For the Drake, I honestly don't know. Also, you should plan on learning to fly a covert ops/stealth bomber (and covert cloak) within the first 6 months, as these make it more practical to travel through dangerous space. |

In general, every person feels driven towards some ships more than others because he/she thinks they will be to their liking a lot. It is however usually connected to what other people say about it. Wether some ships are talked about or not and by who, and how, influences wether we are going to look forward to flying a ship or not by a lot.
In general, no one ship is useless and they all have a certain degree of customizability, and people have the possibility to get creative.
In short, with a few exceptions you can make a ship what you want it to be.
That said, I like cruisers. They are powerful alone and in gangs, and when used correctly(I am guilty of not doing so quite a bit) they can do much more than you expect them to be able to do. |

(Nano-)Hurricane is pretty good, so is a Cynabal. Essentially, facefuck DPS combined with high speed gives you good chances to kill something and gtfo if needed. Also the 100MN AB Tengu, but it's a bit expensive (both ISK- and skillwise) |

Train missiles and the skills to get into a drake . Establish a income generating activity ( missioning for example ) . Train t2 launchers for that drake , do not rush into a battleship . Join a hisec corp then choose your path . Do not PVP early and solo . Best path : Kestrel - caracal - drake . After that drake is t2 fitted you can begin to think about training for pvp . Ofc all depends on income , if you can aford to get money by selling plex then you can forget about isk grinding and concentrate on fun and tears from the begining . That usually means to train minmatar guns and ships. |

I'm going to say Tech 3 Strategic cruisers. Skill wise they aren't that difficult to get into within a couple months. The cost is the barrier most folks will run into, a good fitting roughing you up for half a billion isk.
But, If you're looking to set your sights on the long road, the other options are ... Tech 2 heavy assault cruiser Tech 2 Command ship Tech 2 Marauder Battleship Faction Battleship Carrier Capital ship
The Strategic cruiser is versatile and can be fit to rival the tank/damage on any of these vessels in PVE. It is more maneuverable and survivable than its larger competitors. It costs less than the battleships/cap ships. It takes less skill investment than than any of these other options. It is more capable of overheating, offering some interesting options in flight.
The Strategic cruiser can also be refitted with subsystems to alter its role. It is the only vessel in the game capable of negating and flying right through warp interdiction bubbles. it can be fit to warp cloaked. this combination allows it highly survivable movement through zero sec space. letting you explore and be more self sufficient in these environments.
With higher skills and the right fitting the Strategic cruiser can also be very applicable in PVP. many of the other "end game" pve boats lack any relevance in PVP.
the shear versatility of the strategic cruiser hull class is its greatest strength. |
