Ok, I see this may be a better place for such a post.
I simply want to know what is the best way (if such a way exists) to find and search out spies in an alliance. Pesky little spies.
Any information is greatly welcomed. Eve-mail or post here.

The best way is to engage your brain and out think them. Don't think there's much more to say than that.

otherwise as blacklight said, think about it and just look at all the factors around the spy, normally one anomoly sticks out that will catch them out. --------------------------------------------------------

The First thing to start looking at would probably be 'ex' members of enemy corps, or of certain other corps like GH-SC and anything from BoB or the mercanary collalition. Current and former enemies are an obvious choice, and the other organizations mentioned make extensive use of spies in their military operations.
The Next thing to look for would be people who act like alts but claim to be mains, alts tend to be either hyper specalized or skilless, they also tend to not be as active as a main would be.
there is no doubt third and forth, (and fifth and six....) things to look for in spies. But I don't know what they are.

Tell each individual member of your alliance you are forming a fleet to attack the enemy in a certain system. Tell the members each a different system though, and that the rest of the fleet will meet them there, then attack.
The system that the enemy fleet converges on is the one your spy is at. ------------

Best way is to hear them on Teamspeak. If you have a sneaking suspicion that the voice you hearing of a new member sound distinctly like the ceo of a corp you are at war with . . . . that is your first clue.

Edited by: Rasitiln on 09/06/2005 18:15:27 how about a screenshot of their character selection screen....you can get around it but its certainly one method of keep spys down to a minimum.

Raist,
That is not a bad idea really. Would be excellant for a "how to avoid recruiting spies".
Thank-you everyone for your input. If anyone has the secret code to finding out spies, you just let me know :)

There's an old technique that certain organisations use for detecting 'leaks'. It's called a canary trap.
And quite simply, if you suspect a leak, then you start 'priming' opportunitites, and see if someone bites. E.g. spill a mining op into the alliance channel, and see if someone appears.
Only mention to different 'groups' that the location is a different belt, e.g. 1, 2, 3, etc.
And plant a scout at each, and see which one they 'hit' first.
Other examples, of methodology I'm sure you can think of... :)

Our corp just kicks anyone suspected of spying in an instant, may seem harsh and im glad im not the person who does it.
At times of war we go on hightened allert for such activities. just the last week i think the dirrectors have kicked three chars suspected of espionage. quite grim really, but its a dog eat dog world out there

Easy way to find out if you have a Spy from CEI is just shout that theres free Pie in some system, if Noggy shows up, well you have a CEI spy.
If you wanna know if you have a BNC spy, shout beer (you might find me there then also though)
Dunno what to do about the others...

Good feedback from everyone. I must say that kicking people out left and right is not the diplomatic thing to do. I think the best things are:
A. Search out corp history, for links to common pies. B. See who 'primes' the alliance chat for info, or who knows to much. C. Setup a trap.
I prefer C as a last resort really. That takes up the time and effort of the alliance.
While Recruiting:
A. Corp history B. If it is an alt spy, then regardless of how long the character has been playing, he will likely have basic skills and SPs. A trap for that is to ask him to show up in ship, that relates to the ammount of time he/she played. C. Screenie of login screen.
Those merely help LIMIT recruiting them. Now back to my original question. You all are great, keep it going!
I'm sure there is something we are missing.

It's easy. Spys don't mine.
Have a corp mining op, and kill the toons that won't mine.

Edited by: TheKiller8 on 13/06/2005 01:22:11 It's probably a better idea to avoid getting spies in the first place:
Don't recruit newbies Don't recruit during times of war Don't recruit (ex)hostiles
Now stopping spies is a lot harder. I wouldn't go on a witchhunt untill something obviously goes wrong. Such event would be an hostile fleet suddenly warping out the moment your cov ops is in position on them. At such times immediately screenshot/list everyone in your gang and on TS. You can combine this with earlier mentioned 'fake' info. During a fleet op, act as if you have a cov ops who's going in position while he's actually just sitting in a safespot. Then when that person goes 'alright im ready, warp to me' check if the hostile fleet moves.
edit: oh yeah. A spy is probably doing more than just relaying intell. Since he's obviously on the hostile's side he'll most likely not participate in corp beneficial events. In fact you can expect said persons to be only online during fleet ops, steal things from your corp and even 'accidently' blow up your corpmates.

Well, see, spies are made out of wood right? And what does wood do? Exactly, it floats, so, take all your members and throw them in a big pond and they float, they are a spy and should be podded ASAP. If they sink, well, they weren't a spy.
Or there is a more scientific approach that could be used aswell. If he floats, he is a spy. So, what do we know that floats?? A DUCK!! Right... a duck. So, if he weighs as much as a duck, then he's a spy. A SPY!!!!

Just give them a task to do that's timeconsuming and somewhat boring yet for the greater good, a spy will in more cases than not flake out on any actual work.

My Alt character (different account) does all the crappy tasks as a spy cos this way he/she can do a lot of afk (empire work) whilst I spend time playing the main account. The hardest thing is having the online presence as an alt to convince people you are a full time eve player with one account and not a spy. Bearing this in mind, people that seem to log on and off for short periods of times continually (or is afk long term), would probably be the one thing that would give my alt away, or at least leave it open to suspicion |

Okies, All spies in spy school today would like to thank all the respondants to this post on how not to get caught
On the serious note, You will never catch all spies so trust only a few with the most sensitive information and constantly feed mis-information

As the Leader of a vast network of spies, I always enjoy reading about possible countermeasures that get used.
Most of these are pretty self evident, the really good ones haven't been mentioned yet...
