As a break from the war discussions, I'm looking for useful info from the CEOs/Directors of medium to large corps as to how you go about managing operations with your members. I'm looking for this to be a useful resource for up-and-coming smaller corp CEOs.
Feel free to add anything you think might be helpful in all categories of corp management, from recruiting, to mining splits, hangar control, blueprint access, operational planning, whatever might be useful.

Make a title with basic access to your hangers, for newbies and such. Then, about once a week, especially when recruiting heavily, go into your corp menu, and view peoples titles. Anyone that you know doesn't have roles or a title, give them your newbie title. Voila, real fast role granting en masse. ---

I think having forums that can be accessed out of game is essential to running any mult-national corp. There is no way to efficiently coordinate corp activities properly without forums.
Another very useful thing that any good CEO does is delegate responsibility to trusted members. You'll want a handful of guys that you know you can trust, you make one of them in charge of production, make another guy in charge of recruiting, name a couple fleet commanders for leading military opearations etc.
For a medium to large corp 50-100+ members, you will have to delegate responsibility in order to get anything done in a timely fashion.

even tho I'm not a CEO or director I'll just add that Teamspeak is a good way to get the corp together.
The team and mate spirit is alot better if everyone is on teamspeak, even tho its just random chatter.

Edited by: Chib on 22/06/2005 23:53:56 do not allow people access to you BPO's unless you trust them implicitly....it would be devastating for a small corp to earn its first BS BPO and lose it to a thief the same day
a good resource new corps may find useful is http://www.eve-extra.com it contains some features which new corps that arent full of web designers and millionaires to design and host sites may find useful ---------------------------------------------

I brag to my members about how many kills i got that day, it makes em want to go out and do better..... or they die alittle inside. Eitherway i get the desired result.
On a more serious note, i tell my guys when they do something good, and beat them with sticks when they **** up. Seems to work ok.

Forums: - Is a must.. especially for us people who work during Euro prime time.
Teamspeak - Much quicker to talk than to type.
Delegating responsibility - For any medium-large corporation you need to pass off responsibilities to your trusted members. Usually splitting the divisions upto military, logistics, recruitment & a co-ceo seem to be the norm.
*LOCKING DOWN* your hangars - MASS have 3 options when it comes to hangars. Junior members get take access to the recycling/trash hangar, everything else is off limits. Senior members get take access to 6 hangars. Directors get access to their own special hangar (where I believe they store gimp dolls and swinging chairs).

A very helpful topic. As a newly appointed CEO after the departure of our founding CEO I have been trying to get things more organized. I look forward to more suggestions and tips.

I advise against letting in newbies with less than 1m SP or who've played less than a month. These days there's a lot of people looking for juicy targets who'll stick an alt in your corp.

the best thing i find in making easier to be a ceo of a corp is to beat your member into submission and have them live in fear. And occasionally le them out of their cages.

Forums and TS have been said lots but are invaluable.
The real trick is just communications in general though, keep communicating your current objective, base of operations, area of operations, targets or goal and use all available media to do it i.e. corp mails, forums posts, TS and irc.
We used to joke that unless you told someone six times what you wanted they wouldn't get it, that's not far from the truth when dealing with groups of people especially when timezones and language come into play.
We're always most effective when our comms are good.

First off, just start drinking now. I'm getting to a point where I try to work from home a couple days a week just so I can stay logged in and help out w/ the guys and keep things running. I think a main difference between successful corps and corps that never grow is the leadership inside it. If your corp does not want to grow, then this doesn't apply of course, but if you want to be a larger, bigger corp, then it takes very dedicated and very active leaders. These, you will find, will be the toughest to bring into your "circle of trust". Many corps get made or break in the first 3 months due to greed, argueing, corp theft, and lack of communication and team goals.
Know this though, seriously... If at ANY time it starts to not be fun for you, it's time to re-evaluate your goals, regardless of where you are on teh corp food-chain. I wouldn't trade my guys or my corp for anything, and I think any director/CEO must have that same dedication and drive, and continue to keep making it that way. We constantly set new, and bigger goals, and evaluate each other and our methods regularly. If someone isn't helping, or not doing what is expected, be up-front, and honest, but don't let the problem fester and grow.
So find some goals that your corp would want to achieve, or set some goals that you want the direction of your corp to go. You will find most people are much happier and active when actually playing FOR a reason, instead of just playing.
Understand your corp mates. Don't just trash someone or pick on them because they like to mine or build, or run agent missions or PvP. Everyone likes aspects of the game, some like them all. Most though try to "specialize" in 1 or 2 fields, as their characters can get much more developed this way.
To encourage this sort of thing, communications and teamwork is a must, hence forums and teamspeak. The voice comms really help the morale and keep your group tight. The forums help keep everyone in touch with immediate "issues" as well as long term goals.
As for BPO's and other uber "corp assets." Be paranoid. I mean George Orwell Big Brother 1984 paranoid bro. Because when you get stolen from, everyone is going to laugh at you, including CCP. It's one aspect of the game that many would like to change, but until it does, lock it down, or keep it in personal hangars.
Give members and "teams" their own hangar. Give them something to take pride in. Make sure they are clear that you are ALL a team, and that each part of your team has it's responsibility, such as mining, building, etc. Keep the accesses separate for your members unless necessary (director) but keep the hangar accesses to a minimum where possible. Let your miners have a drawer, your PvP ppl, your construction (lock it down), your agent runners, etc... Again, it would be easier if CCP could double the hangar size, but it's not here yet, so we gotta deal with it.
In short, there is nothing a solid team can't do. Teamwork is THE most important thing in Eve IMO. It transcends all that "I'm a fighter" or "I'm a miner" attitude, because when you're a team, miners fight and fighters mine, and every level in between. You do what needs to be done, and you work together. When you set "team" goals and get everyone together, you can look at all the fruits of your labor, and you are always amazed at the results.
Teamwork is an incredible weapon. Make the best of it.

No matter what you want to do, do it with corpmates. Unless you are trying isk farm lvl 4s, do it in a fun setup with some friends. Bring along the newbies and people that haven't done it. Bring along the people you don't see at the mining op or whatever your corp likes to do. You'll learn a lot about people doing that.
If you don't have teamspeak, be noisy in corp chat. My corp used to have some teamspeak options available to us, but we never had anything important that it got used for (not exactly pvpers). But if you do have TS, definately apply some RULES as CEO. And if someone messes them up, moderate their ass, because otherwise you're going to have a whole TS server full of tenyearolds playing grabass. And thats no fun. For me anyways.
Like the above folks said, be super paranoid with your BPOs. For my corp at least, its strictly director research. I have slowly forced them to gain research skills, and trust them all completely.
You are CEO. That means you probably ought to do more for your corp than anyone else. But what you DO decide to delegate to other folks you need to be 100% behind, otherwise you present yourself as not caring. Be right there when they need you or you'll have some people wondering why you are CEO, or why they are part of your mad industry ---

YOu guys are the best, humorists notwithstanding.. ;)
Seriously though, keep this stuff coming and if you know anyone who might have something to contribute, send them here.
IF anyone can think of new topics other than discussed before feel free to post them up. If we get enough info in here, I'll take the time to write out a corp-building/management guide.

I would suggest Ventrillo over Teamspeak. It's much clearer. You may need to get an older version. I hear there is something funky about the most recent version.

Ventrillo is kinda wierd... It really depends on the tastes of whoever is running it what you run though :)
If you are CEO and run your voice server, obviously, its not unwise to research and discover which you prefer for yourself. ---

I gotta agree with this totally (not as a CEO myself, but as someone who has been a member of a few corps...).

It's good to start the corporation with a few friends you know and trust and get the corporation up and running with offices, main objectives and goals. Decide how access will be shared. If you have a goal you have something to look forward to, something that drives your corporation.
If you have friends in a big corporation try making something out of it, a friendship. Theres nothing like having blue pals helping you out
It is quite important that the corporation has a good financial status incase a good member needs a new ship, funding for wars and events.
And the last but not least you will have to show some color, be funny and have a good time drinking and joking on comms. (TEAMSPEAK/VENTRILO - FORUMS IS A MUST OFC )
