My corp is in war with some guys who own POS in empire 0.3 system. Now problem is that we are not being able to make them to fight. They simply sit under POS defences whenever we come into their system. Killing haulers doesnt seem to be very useful because intel says they got lots of fuel stored + they use noobship spies which we can not take down without concord freakin out at us. Now I've been told that it is very hard to take down POS while it is online, but it seems like we dont have much choice, so I need to know how hard exactly it is. That includes: 1) how far and how hard do large laser sentries hit? 2) how much hp does force field got? So basically is it realistic to expect it to go down in 1-2 hrs of shooting with 3-4 geddons? And if not then what should we expect anyway? ____ When flying by Concord Customs Commander's Dominix I distinctly heard him saying "... world domination..." |

it depends on the tower they have up
A large tower has 35mil to 50mil shields and 4mil to 10mil armor.
Divide those numbers by 2 to get aproximate values for a medium tower, or by 4 to get the approximate numbers for a small tower.
Large Beam lasers will attack at ranges up to 300km and they can do serious damage.
You can tank it if they dont know the best way to defend. You will be the target of any one turret for approximately 30 seconds I think but it could be longer. As long as the turrets are all inside the shield, you can not target them, only the tower itself. If there are defenders in the Defense shield, you can not target them, but they can target and fire on you.
It all depends on what they have set up. If it is a large tower with lots of guns, you are prolly better trying to starve the tower (ie stop them from delivering fuel) If well balanced they may have fuel for up to 8 or 9 days.

I guess you forgot about losing a typhoon and vengeance, having both pilots podded, then 1 being podded again not 20 minutes later. Oh yeah and one of your geddon ( or was it an apoc) pilots warping to a safespot and logging out when confronted with a few cruisers.
Oh, and good job on shooting an alt and getting sentried (twice, even).

A small amarr tower has 10,000,000 HP which means that you will need to do about 1,000 damage per second after resists to it for 10,000 seconds, or around 2 hours and 45 minutes. Since it regenerates shields over time, increase that to about 3 hours and 15 minutes.
GOOD LUCK GI JOE

we have just shot down a small POS so lemme tell you exactly how they go down:
a) you have to take it down @25% shield so it goes reinforced mode. Once in the mode a timer pops up and says for how long it will be invulnerable. One in reinforced everything but their offensive modules and tower go offline.
b) have a HUGE FLEET waiting when the timer expires. Expect resistance hiding in the pos shields ofc. You have to finish off the 25% remaining shield, kill all the armor and kill the structure down @40% When the structure falls @40% the protective field goes down and you can shoot at the defenders inside the ex-protection field (note that shield != protection field).
at (b) we were a damn fleet of 20bs and we were getting owned buy 3bs+bb that were defending it. The pos only had 3 medium guns +3 small guns and were no real threat, but the defenders can effectively focus fire and own you.
We were playing warpin-shoot-regroup and all from the beggining for 6 hours this afternoon AND IT WAS A DAMN SMALL TOWER.
In the end: POS are VERY unbalanced, you have to have lots of time to kill off if you want to shoot down one, even a poorly defended one. We were not trying to take down a medium or large one, a small one is still nearly inbulnerable to bs fleets if there is minimal protection in it (like 6bs).

well, another tactic is to completely camp the system, stopping their fuel supply, it owuld be a much easier task than taking down the pos fully activated... until the patch...

It's a common misconception that this can warp. All the hostile has to do is enter the sol in a pod, warp into pos. Hop into the corp hangar array, get the itty, load the fuel, get em to the tower and there goes 3-4 days of camping one sol for 23/7
Also bear in mind, that camps cannot be so long, because all the hostile force needs to do is count your campers and jump you when you have the least people in = suicide for campers.

This isn't a simple mining or reacting POS. This POS has enough firepower to completely max out its power grid. Go ahead and assault it, but keep in mind that you have to assault it with a fleet big enough that can sustain a battleship loss every 15 seconds until the target is destroyed. And that's not taking into account our own fleet that will no doubt be sitting inside the shield taking pot shots at any attackers.
Don't bother laying siege to the fuel supply, either. Not only does the tower have a month's worth inside it already, but we top it off every week with alts in single-man corps. If you figured out who they were and declared on them, they could just form a new corp the next time they have to make a fuel run.
Give up this useless war. I won't make a big deal about it if you pull out.

Wow, that took 6 hours. I think you would find ours a lot more discourgeing because we don't do such things such as foolish mining.
Anyway, the owners of said POS should have had more bigger guns they could have onlined by just offling the moon harvester and silos.

I just wonder: is it possible to 'tank' a POS with 1 Large and 3 medium laser batterys? There are no scrambling modules or EW modules at the POS.
By 'tanking' i mean few(don't know how many) battleships, warping to ss for repairs & cap filling.

Try EW against the guns. If they don't have many, that will get you free reign to just shoot at it till you fall asleep.

We DO fight them, so don't think we're hiding behind our POS. Two days ago we took them down, though they had better numbers, one or two more ships (not to mention their two BS vs. one BS on our side), and way higher average damage output than our attack group.
Anyway, if you know that your enemy has a POS in system, would you near it, knowing that virtually every POS setup has defense guns? We can't help it if they're PMSing over it now because his corpmate clownshoe thought it was wise to check it out.
