After playing for 2 days in EvE I am kind of thinking people are generally not nice.
The first day I started I saw a guy with a skull and flashin, so I shot at him with my ship and got blown up my the police. Fair mistake in my opinion, but the guy started talking in the local channel saying I was a noob etc and that I generally sucked.
Later that day I was wanting to explore a little, so I went to a jumpgate, however I didn't know much abou them so asked on local if it cost me anything to use them. This caused about 3 people to laugh at me inlocal adn say things like give them 1million isk (which I don't have) to them so I could go through
Finally, I recently got a little isk together (900k) not enpugh for a cruiser yet I know nor doI have the skills to use one, but I got talking to a guy that said he would build me one if I gave him this isk. I thought it seemed like a good idea, however when I gave him it he did a runner! Havent seen him scince.
So is everybody in EvE so mean? or have I just met a few bad eggs? |

Well, your choice of Avatar name does not help you at all...
There are a lot of ppl out to victimize noobs in this game, it seems to be an ever-expanding proffession in this game, so basically you have to play with a "trust no one" attitude...
Your name, and your questions in local smack of noobness, you are a prime target for griefers...
Just be more careful in the future.
EVE is a heartless PvP game, in all aspects of the game, not just combat... ------------------------------------------------ "for piece sakes!" |

Sorry dude, its an online community and people love to harass and exploit naive newbies like yourself. (no offense)
Remember to try and regard everything with both eyes open until you know what you are doing.
But seriously, not all people are like them. It sounds like you indeed ran into a son of a b*tch scammer when he ran off with your 900k. But you shouldnt have gave him your money in the first place.

Do the Tutorials if you haven't. Eve is a large game and its got quite a learning curve, without the begining tutorials you do feel a bit lost. Sure there are some people who can be utter knobs. Noobs get a rough deal in all MMO's, so best thing to do is join a corperation willing to help you get started, answer any questions you might and enjoy the game.

Trust noone, read the forums, and be polite even though others arent.
And - Trust noone, until you get a hang of the game.

Bad eggs
But you need to be very careful who you want to trust in EVE. In fact some people will recommend not trusting anyone else with your isk except yourself.
Some people can be very helpful and friendly to new players and it might be useful to find a corporation that can explain how eve works to new players like yourself. Some corporations will also give you skills, and a better ship to mine with and do other tasks to get you started.

Edited by: jbob2000 on 29/06/2005 11:53:47 You've just met a few 'bad eggs'. Most of the eve population is way more mature and nice-er than what you've described. Of course, every game has it's scammers and stupid 10 year olds who go around say '0mg wtf ur such a n0ob'.
EDIT:
Did we all just post at the same time? -----------------------------------------------

Eve has it's fair share of jerks, the same as any online game, but for the most part, people here are OK.
The trick is to not trust total strangers (the same as in real life), and to know who to ask for help.
If you browse these forums, and spend some time in the help channel, you should pick up a reasonable idea about how to play the game.

There are loads of nice guys ingame and on the forum. Most people who are at work also read and reply to forum discussions. It can turn into a heated argument but it only shows people are passionate about the game.
Look for a good corp that will help you get settled in and you'll earn yourself a cruiser in no time
There is also a ingame channel for new players to look for help, the help channel. You'll find volunteers there or experienced players who can answer a few questions.

I quickly found 2 general rules to live by when I was new:
1. Dont trust anyone, not even your best EVE buddies. They will skin you and make a run for it.
2. Never ever fly/use things you cannot afford to loose. ------------------------- Grand Agitator Currently homeless, mail or convo if interested

Yes 1337ster, a lot of ppl in EVE are not nice, and they are very supportive of one another...
Fly safe, and don't give anyone any ISK unless it's through the trade window, or the market... But watch out for market scammers too... ------------------------------------------------ "for piece sakes!" |

Try a better name, without l33t in it, and maybe people will be nicer. At least Nafri isnt nice to people with mainly numbers as names.

As some folks have said, Eve is a wide-open game. The temptation to be an anonymous jerk without any consequences is too much a temptation for some people. For these, knocking down others for no real point other than causing grief is 'fun'. Even trying to stay away from said people will cause them to cry on these boards about how carebears are "ruining" thier fun.
But, there are also many fine people who will help as well. Keep your head down for the first couple months, find a decent corporation and yeah, honestly, think about a name change.

I think you are pulling our chain man.
Whatever you are doing, and whoever you are, you are right. EVE is the game with most hardened population in the world. This is the reason why it will never be a game with 1,000,000 subcribers, and will always dwell on the back of the spacial sort of people. Us
