How about in the HUD when you hover of the ship of that character it'll have the <AFK> beside the player name, like; <AFK>Hexlander[UMEC]

personally i think in addition to an AFK indicator there should be an auto fire upon attack feature.
if afk is enabled then basic defence systems should be instigated upon engagement to auto defend yourself.
although the auto defence systems i have in mind would constitute only 50% efficency to if you where not AFK and doing it manually and would need a skill to train upon to have the ability, i think it would be a great feature to the game for some limited efence capability.
