This will be the first of many communications for a big competition starting today July 3rd, and ending Septemeber 3rd.
We have all seen the pics of the models for the EVE ships models (or at least most of us have) Brutix: http://pic.eve-online.com/model/16229_large_2.jpg Megathron: http://pic.eve-online.com/model/641_large_2.jpg
Well that is the basis for the competition. I am, in my need to find too much work for myself to do, sponsoring a model building competition. Thats right, time to step away from the computer for a bit and get those creative juices really flowing.
The rules are simple as all my contests are. There is no entry fee and the only limit is time as entries must be submitted by August 21st to allow time for the judging. The winner will be announced at the September 3rd EVE Radio meet in Pontefact, Enlgand click here for details.
Any real world medium is allowed and surrealist or interpretational entries are welcome. But it has to be a real world object (my apologies to the computer graphic wizards but want it to be a real thing.) Entries are submitted by sending me three digital pics of the model when you are done with it to [email protected]. I will be hosting a picture gallery on my site at thebadkid.com for all to see and comment on.
DJ and celebrity judges will make the final descisions and the grand prize winner will walk away with my own hand made large scale RIFTER model. That's right even I will be hard at work this summer and you YES YOU the players of Eve-Online will get a step by step pictorial blog of the building of the top prize. Mounted and plaqued with your name and and the event it will be shipped to you (or presented in person if you make the meet.) On top of that the EVE-Radio prize vualt will be *****ed open and ships and isk will be added to the purse. Also the first three runner ups will get 25 mil a piece and ships of different classes of their choice. More details will emerge as I post the continueing saga of the RIFTER build.
To get things started here is a little sneak peek at the beginning stage of the work.
or click here for the large view.
Check Eve Radio Forums for up to date details starting on the fifth and join us on air 24/7

"eve-radio is not responsible for accidental amputations, salpel-based injuries, or power-tool accidents".
I can see it already...

does it have to be a model from scratch or can it be a remote controlled model ? (example : modified remote controlled submarine to look like an EVE ship)
would be great seeing it in an aquarium flieing/swimming around :D (maybe make some battery powered torps too ^_^ )

Yes Cap'n Istvaan it is.
The last of the INO reporters returns. I am covering the event for all to see. I was really hoping to hear from you on this and would love to see you enter the festivities.
Maybe if I can't write as well I can beat you in building

Anyone know if there is an export tool for EVE's models? I want to export it into Catia so I can mod it a bit and CNC out some parts for the tooling. This wouldn't make it perfect since I would just get the mesh and not the shaded version. But its a good starting point. I doubt CCP will post the high poly models that the shaders are based on :)

The .tri files are the ship models, you can nab them with the stuff extracter, and the textures are .dds.
The converter progam is compiled from this gent's programming my corp mate Eleewa compiled it and you can download it here.
Run ift from the windows command prompt (run line won't work) with this syntax: eepeep target.tri > target.obj
Textures are in .dds format, you can get the names from the mess in the .blue files if you can't guess the filenames. If you have photoshop you may be able to open the dds files up straight away, but you may need to hunt the plug in down (took me minutes from google). I dunno about Selvin's object viewer (below) but for 3d studio max I crop the textures down (there's 3 sizes of the same texture map in each file) by re-sizing the canvas, anchored to the left, and making the image as wide as it is tall. (works nice and doesn't leave any extra pixels lyin' around biggrin.gif )
If you don't have a 3d program that can use the .obj files, Selvin also made & posted a simple viewer here.
If you have your own program, you may have to flip the texure verticly (I do for 3d studio max) for it to apply correctly.
If ya have any trouble just pm me on back and I'll do my best to help. Cynicism is the body's realization that the body is really in charge

Yes, what happened with the exporter tool? No link? Does anybody have an exporter tool for EVE models. I saw a movie that apparently wasn't capped ingame so someone must be able to do the exporting. Is there som EULA problem involved?

Did anyone find a tool for sucessfully extracting/converting these files? I tried Dragon Unpacker but I think it corrupted the .tri files when extracting them. Apparently they are used by 'Alias Triangle' but I cant find any reference to this program on the Alias/Autodesk websites. After exporting them with Dragon (there were also .blue files ???) I tried importing them into AC3D (a shareware 3D program I found which claimed to be able to handle them) but I just kept getting errors. Has anyone else had any luck?
