Hello! I started the game a couple of days ago and I rather enjoy it. However, I have a few questions that I can't seem to find an answer to on the evelopedia.
One, I have an ORE Venture. It seems to be a rather new addition to the game as I'm having trouble finding guides that reference it. Is it a proper mining ship to use for a new pilot? What should I be working towards in the meantime between now and strip mining ships?
Two, how do I properly defend myself against NPC pirates? I only have two slots for turrets and it seems that I can either mine efficiently with two mining lasers or I can defend myself properly with two turret guns. Do drones work into this somehow? If so, then do I simply equip two turret guns on my frigate and have my drones do the mining?
Three, it seems that having an industrial ship makes everything more efficient. Am I supposed to use my Wreathe to anchor several secure cargo containers in the asteroid field and then switch back to my mining frigate to fill up the containers?
Thank you for your help. If you have any other tips for a two-day old pilot, then I'd be grateful to hear them. |

1. Between the Venture (new mining ship. In game since last december. Good newb mining ship) and the barges there is no other ship. Though a mining barge can be trained pretty quickly with some focus.
2. Other way around. 2 miners and a light scout drone for protection. And of course a little bit of a tank on your ship.
3. Correct. +1 for understanding that a industrial ship is to haul stuff from point a to point b, not to sit in a belt mining. |

Indeed the Venture is a new addition to the game. Its aim is to be a decent little mining ship for newer players. As an EvE vet I think it's an amazing ship and I use mine now and then. It has a large ore bay, mines ore and/or gas quickly, it's fast, and it's very difficult to catch. We don't even bother trying to catch them in lowsec.
The ship has a 5000m3 ore hold, a significant size compared to previous mining ships. The Venture also comes with a bonus of +2 warp core strength which makes it ideal for mining in lowsec. The ship is so freakin hard to catch.
Ironically, the Venture ore hold size is larger than the anchorable cans you mentioned.
For offense the ship has a 10m3 drone bay and a 10mbit/sec bandwidth. The ship can field either two small combat drones or one medium combat drone. This is your method of taking out pesky belt rats. It's not the greatest, but it's adequate.
So for ship fitting advice. Use the high slots for either mining lasers or gas harvesters and the third slot for a cloak or a core probe launcher. If you're having a hard time with fitting everything, you can leave the third high slot empty to free up some CPU and PWG.
Mid slots go for either an afterburner or a microwarpdrive as well as a shield booster and a shield extender. The fitting requirements may be more difficult for you but essentially you want speed and shield tank, however you can achieve that.
You only have one low slot so your choices are limited. You could go with a nanofiber internal structure to increase your ships speed. Or you coul fit a damage control for increased resistances (my personal favorite). May w some kind of capacitor module if you run out a lot. You could fit a mining upgrade that increases your mining volume per cycle. It's really up to you.
Then you have three rig slots. I personally like to use these for shield upgrades. I've had success rolling with three shield resistance rigs. One of each type except explosive. I've also had success with fitting all three with field extenders.
There's a lot of choices, but make no mistake, this ship is amazing for players of all skill levels. Trolling is like art. Anyone can finger paint, but it takes true talent to create a masterpiece. |

Solid post, I wanted to add that for the Low Slot I prefer the Drone Damage Amplifier, I run 2 Lights, solid help with them. |

To add to the advice, the mining barges also have no room for guns; so you will be using drones for them too.
You need to buy and train the skills:
- Drones to 4 or 5 (if you want to control the maximum of 5 drones, go for 5 - most people do this) - Scout Drone Operation (this lets you use scout drones: Hobgoblin or Hornet or Warrior drones) - the other skills in the Drones category, that make the drones have more damage, fly faster, have better range, etc.
The Venture and the mining barges generally have large ore bays, so you don't need to jetisson anything just mine and then go to station to unload and come back.
Right click the asteroids and Save Location and you can warp right on top of them to save travel time. |

Hey man,
Ive recently just come back to EVE and picked up a venture to start getting some assets together.
My fit is the following,
HIGH 2 x Mining Laser I's (you can use Tech II when mining is at IV if your interested in Mining id advise you aim for this first) 1x Salvager (if im running with someone who can kill rats.) Or a Small Rocket Launcher to help with DPS.
MIDS 1x Medium Shield Extender (try and fit a Medium rather than a Small) 1x Afterburner 1x Webbifier to slow the small ships enough for you to hit them
LOWS 1x Mining upgrade (i prefer this to get my yield per cycle up)
Drones; 2 Small Warrior I's seem to keep rats at bay or 2 Mining Drones if you with someone who can kill rats. |
