Hi all!
New to EVE Online and am having a great time. But I was curious. Can you fly ships of the other races? Example: I'm Gallentean and wondered if I could eventually fly a ship of the Amarr.
I'm really impressed with the scope of this game. Lots to learn. If ya see me online, feel free to chat me up.

Yes. Every character can do anything, as long as you train the skills for it.
You will see that you have the "Gallente frigate" skill (and maybe Cruisers if you bought the skillbook). If you want to pilot an Amarr frigate, just purchase the skillbook at the most convenient place for you, train it, and there you go.
Amarr frigates do not use Hybrid turrets as Gallente ones, so in order to be effective, you will have to train other skills, like "small energy turret".
Eventually, practically everybody starts training for other races. Every race has good ships in several categories, and you WILL have favourites, so you will train for them.
The term we use is "crosstraining". |

You sure can. Just like any other skill in EVE, ships are governed by a particular skill book that varies based on the ship type and race. To my knowledge, there is only one ship type that does not have separate racial skill books, and that is the battlecruiser class (which borrows it's racial requirements from the cruiser skillset of the race it belongs to; that's a concept you'll deal with once you have the skills and isk to even consider BCs).
If there's a particular ship you're interested in piloting and you want to know what skills it would take you personally to be able to, just click the like blue circle with the "i" in it (the info link), then prerequisites. Every skill that is listed is required. Any skill with a green check next to it means you meet or exceed that requirement. A yellow circle means you have that skill at least trained to level 1, but not the required level (which is listed next to the skill name). A red X means that you do not have that particular skill injected and will need to purchase the skill book from the market.
Most skill books can be found on the market. You can either find the one you're looking for by (from the info window of that particular skill book) clicking "view market details" at the bottom or by going to the market tab and searching for it under skill books. Once you have that pulled up, it's best to sort through your purchase options by two criteria: price (lowest to highest) and then distance (lowest to highest in jumps). Weigh your options, and buy from whichever suits your preferences.
Once you purchase it, you'll have to head to the station you purchased it from. Once there, open your station inventory, right click the skill book, and either click inject skill or train to level 1 if you prefer to start training the first level immediately.
That was probably far more info than what your question asked for, but I figured it couldn't hurt. Send me an Eve-mail if you're in game (or not) if you need any more help. I'd be glad to give you some pointers. |

Here's the ships my friend can pilot (he is only missing 4 titan skills, which the skill books would cost a total of 19.8 billion ISK): http://eveboard.com/pilot/Aandaan/ships
Note that specialization will get your further faster, so you can match a multi-year veteran in short order (skills only go to 5), but if you are not in a hurry, there is nothing wrong with diversifying and cross-training. I consider myself a jack-of-all-trades, and I don't mind being slower to master them than those that specialize.
After a few years you reach a point where cross-training is the only practical way to continue training, as you run out of things to train otherwise.
Note that NPC pirate faction ships require two races of ship skills to pilot: * Angel Cartel ships require Gallente and Minmatar ship skills. * Guristas ships require require Caldari and Gallente ship skills. * Sansha ships require Caldari and Amarr ship skills. |

Yep, it's not like other games where you make a wizard, you can never wear heavy armour or use a big sword, or you make a fighter you can never cast a spell. In EVE, one character can do anything as long as you train the skill. Your "class" is determined by the ship you're currently flying, not your character. How good you are in that class, is determined by your skills (in game and out).

If you're curious about the lore justification for this, it's because successfully created eggers pay back the cost of their creation very rapidly, and from that point become independent political entities with standing on the order of an independent planet. They owe no allegiance to their parent faction anymore as of the start of your character's play time.
The empires went with this system because trying to directly control their capsuleer pilots (who are immortal and can operate a battleship or space station by themselves if pressed) turned out to be an incredibly bad idea, and just letting them go and binding them with financial incentives (missions and hiring them to shoot each other in FW) kept them from acquiring the motivation or boredom to take over planets or blow up governments. |

Thanks everyone!!!! This is all so awesome! I've been looking for a very long time to find a game that is deep, has lots of lore, and that is set in space. I'm having a blast.
Y'all are great...thanks again

Yes, you can train to fly all ships of all races if you have the time. Trolling is like art. Anyone can finger paint, but it takes true talent to create a masterpiece. |

Just don't go mad and train a little of everything, neglecting your core skills to fly anything well.
Luckily for you, Amarr and Galente have very compatible skills.
They both Armor Tank, and both use drones a lot.
