In my (system) BIOS option I changed "Video RAM Cacheable from disabled to enabled", which resolved the CTDs (10 per hour) for me. It should not have fixed it but it might help others.
Video RAM Cacheable Technical info:
"caching the video BIOS does not necessarily translate into better system performance. First of all, modern operating systems like Microsoft Windows XP do not need to use the video BIOS. They bypass the BIOS completely and use the graphics card's driver instead. Therefore, absolutely no benefit can be realized by caching the BIOS."

To me that says that EvE is making calls it should not be making, or changing this option should not have solved my problem. In anyway I'm no technofoob but i'm still puzzled as to why this solved the problem while I was able to run EvE a year ago without any crashes with that option turned off.
The logserver logs showed crashes at different points in the code which implies it would not be directly related to the game source. It could however be related to graphic calls being done that are not logged in the logserver by EvE. Or those calls triggering an obscure DirectX bug. Or maybe a DirectX dll on my system that is causing the problems (maybe installed by a different game). DirectX has low level system access and could cause the memory violations either in response to an EvE call or a wrong DirectX dll on my system.

I'm brand new to the game. I was pretty excited to play a space game since I haven't played one since Earth and Beyond. I have a Nvidia 6800 GT PCIe, Soundblaster Audigy 2ZS, Pentium 4 3.4ghz and 2 gigs of ram with windows XP. I started getting this same problem as soon as I began the space flight tutorial. It was fine in the station for the first tutorial. I have been playing numerous other games and they run beautifully on my comp. Has there been any resolution yet or should I just uninstall and forget it?

Sadly, CCP doesn't seem to care about our problems. They are too busy patting each other on the back. Check out the most recent dev blogs.
To make matters worse, the management at CCP have the planning and leadership skills of a chimpanzee. Who schedules everyone to go on vacation right after a big patch??? They should have all gone before the patch.

What I (and a few other people, no doubt) want to know is will this stop the lagging and constant CTDs a lot of people have been having with XP systems?

Go test the update with your XP machine on the test server. The more feedback they have now, the better.

What about XP users with the EXACT same symptoms as the 98/ME users?
I get the freezes, the camera floating, the wierd spikes in FPS seen in the graph posted earlier, etc. Tried different drivers, video settings, ini changes, nothing works.

someone mentioned XP users may be running the game in windows 98 compataility mode. No idea if this is your case but worth a look. On the up side there is a fix for this coming in the next patch.

I fixed my issue.
XP SP2 Athlon64 3000+ Socket 939 90nm MSI Neo2 Platinum 1gb OCZ EL Plat Rev2
I was running the CPU at 9*270 which is 2430Mhz. 3x Hyper Transport and alittle extra voltage.
I reset my bios to default speeds and voltages for the CPU and RAM and now it runs like butter. Must be some timing issue that was introduced in the Cold War update.

Just returned back to eve after a 10 month break, this used to run fine on this machine:
3400 64bit Geforice 6800 Ultra 1gb Corsair 2-2-5-2-1t 10k RPM Raptor Drive
Now its stuttering pretty badly, even on the character creation screen.
Got all the latest updates for drivers and directX already.

Do you have win98/ME installed? if so, then you can fix this problem NOW by going to the thread i provided a link to above (a few posts back).
If you have any other O/S then the next patch should be fixing the stuttering problem. |

Edited by: Celene Resian on 19/08/2005 09:35:39 now i dont get this .... my system runs fine, hell i pull up 3 instances of the game and run each of them lag free everyday (yes that 3 eve games, different accounts) and for those of you that have 98SE/ME what are you doing?.... thats the most retarded thing you can use looking at most of your system specs the stuff you guys got is enough to run the game .... just 98/ME WHY?!!?!?! upgrade darnit!!!
as for the bug ... in your taskmanager .... set the priority to "realtime" sure it will basically kill everything else and all you can do is play the game but it worked for a few friends ... did anyone try completly messing with the settings in game as well as vid card.... had a friend that turened off Vsync and kicked the AF to 8x ... fixed the problem for him

Ehhh...
Wrong character there, but no matter.
Windows XP ATI Radeon 9800Pro Sound Blaster Audigy 1024 MB RAM 2.2 GHz AMD Athlon64 3400
No problems what-so-ever. I do believe it's a problem with the way older OSs, EVE, and graphics hardware play with one another.
Windows 98 is stone-age technology, folks... |

Yeah, upgrade dammit, pay up the (~250$ CAN) licence to an operating system that started out by BREAKING every possible game.
