in the previous version you could attack convoys - ok they didn't drop anything (they used to in earlier versions I think). I was just checking they didn't drop anything in this one. I attacked the convoy 100km or so from the station and guns and upon my 1st shot I just vapourised for no reason. Any ideas?

Edited by: Dionysus Davinci on 06/07/2005 17:10:30 Safe Sentry range is usually considered 170kms. If you tried in a BS, you should have done it in low security first where stations only have 2 turrets and you can survie long enough to warp out.

I haven't extensively tested this yet, but I had the same idea as Chin... Sentries locked and fired at me 180k out. Possible that they've been buffed.

I attacked a player a while ago, the only thing i saw was 5 concord cruisers warping in from nowhere and blowing up my ship 4 seconds later.
Did you seen any concord ships warping in or was it just my connection that lagged? |

dont think concord defend convoy's otherwise how u ment to kill a convoy, it would be near impossible, I've been scanning a few convoy's 2day they carry some nice stuff, just need a ship capable of sniping them lol

Edited by: MachZERO on 08/07/2005 01:50:10 The setup I've been able to use effectively for sniping convoys out at 180+km is a tempest that is buffed by a raven. I've been hit as far out as 170km from the closest sentry b4 tho. Not fun. The "rumor" about sentries only having a range of 150km is bull.
If you want to snipe from far away make sure that you are 180+ km away from the CLOSEST TURRET! NOT the station! You should be fine then. Pre-align to warp just in case.

If you attack a player in Concord protected space (.5 and higher) Concord will smack you down everytime you engage a player - and you will not be able to escape (to somehow do so is considered an exploit) ------------------------------------------------ Serve the State Join Channel CAINCOM |

I don't know what this has to do with convoys and sentries, but I'll bite. They don't actually warp, they just appear.

Sentries have an unlimited range. But at least before the patch they would only open fire if you were within 150km of them when you were shooting.

I thought sentry range was dependant on system security level?

I haven't done this recently, but prior to Exodus, these were the rules on attacking NPC convoys.
You can attack a convoy that doesn't belong to the same corp as the station you are at. This pretty much means that if you attack a convoy going to a station, you'd be okay - no matter what the range. However, if it is coming from a station of the same corp CONCORDOKKEN (okay, so no CONCORD, just sentries, but it's pretty much insta-death for almost any ship in a 0.5+ system). I don't recommend these tactics with anything larger than a frigate (come on, they're haulers) because, well... I'm not sure if this still works.
The other thing is that I've been told that these things no longer drop "loot." This probably isn't a good use of times until they start putting things in them again. ---------------------------------

From what I understand, sentries in 0.5 space and below will hit you within 150km. Higher sec sentries will hit you further out than that and nobody really knows exactly what that range is. --------------------------------------------

Sentry gun range varies depending on the size of your ship I'm pretty sure, namely your sig radius.
Smaller ships (frigs or stabber cruiser) can get in a lot closer than a bs can before the sentries open up. Use to be around 75km, 60km or so for some, for a frig but have seen bs get hit all the way out to 200km.
Course this was all pre-patch so could have changed.
