Since i'll have to wait a few weeks till my missiles skills are up to jump into my raven again i have decided to use my old tempest... and here is something that i can't understand...
i decided to use 800mm Repeating Artillery I with emp ( i am fighting angels ), with my skills and gyro T2 i have optimal range at 2.5km, falloff 20km, tracking 0.054.
i noticed that i only manage to hit BS around 10-15km distance... never under 5km, witch is wierd since optimal is at 2.5km, and i berly hit them at 20... now the funny thing is that at 20-25kms i pwn cruisers in like 5-10secs...
I am relly confused about what is going on... how come at 20km i pwn cruisers, witch have a smaller sig then bs, but i can't hit a bs?!?... how come optimal is 2.5km and i never hit a bs/cruiser under 5km?!?

tranversal velocity. try to keep it low and you could hit them with 1400mm's, its high if the npc's are orbiting you and low when coming straight at you, also higher when closer... make overview display transversal velocity...

Yup, transversal. "Optimal range" is such a misleading term for autocannons, you need mad tracking enhancements to get "optimal" performance out of them at that range.
What I suspect is happening at 20km, is that your tracking is good enough to consistently hit both cruisers and BS. You're operating in falloff range, which causes you to miss a fair bit and reduces your DOT almost 50%, but it's still high enough to kill cruisers quick, so you're not noticing the misses there. Against a BS that lost DOT becomes a much bigger deal, so it seems like you're barely hitting at all.
If you want to work at <5km, use 'approach' or 'keep at range', never 'orbit' - unless your target's webbed - and turn your AB off. That said, I still prefer dual 650's for angels, 800s don't track well enough for my taste. Also consider fusion ammo - angels may tank either shields or armor, but explosive is the weak point in either case. EMP is very good all-around ammo, but against angels the EM damage isn't going to help you break any tanks.

Not really higher when closer. For a given transversal velocity, the closer the ship is to you the harder it is to hit (given its under optimal). ____ If your not dyin' your not tryin'. |

First off if you're fighting angels you should use fusion and secondly with the new warp in ranges i'd say go 1400 you'll pretty much insta-pop everything you can lock.
Oh and say hi to slayer and the rest of the reprobates for me

thx for the tips guys, i will see what i can come up with, pribably will try dual 650 with fusion
about frigs... i am killing them with drones, 6berserkers can do the job pretty fast, and i noticed that if you put target painter on frigs they woud go down a little faster from drones.
