With the new Crimewatch rules this might be kind of redundant to some maybe useful to others.
So there you are flying around in your spanking pimp-fit marauder, Machariel, Tengu or what have you and some douche shows up in your mission after skillfully scanning your ass down. They pop one of your wrecks, go all flashy and you in your ignorance goes: Hey, wtf, dumbass can't be taking s**t from me, I am uber pve machine and noone can beat me.
*Cue irritating sound of the failhorn*
Sorry dudes and dudettes that isn't they way it works. You try to go all full-tilt on his ass in an "I'll shoot his dumb ship. Mash CTRL-Click and F1. And, hey, wtf now...I'm dying" because you reckon you can out-tank him and out-dps. sure, maybe in some instances this may be a viable end result, but more often than not you get pointed, and slowly ground to beautiful spacedust or quickly pulverized due to the fact that the baiter has beautiful friends waiting in the wings to swoop in and join in on the space gangbang.
The solution is awfully simple:
- First, in order to avoid baiters abandon your wrecks and dropped cargo containers (right-click wreck, etc in order make them "blue"). Why make them blue? Somebody else will steal them? You have to ask yourself, why risk your pimpfit for a piece of what is more than likely crappy loot. So "blue" your wrecks.
- Secondly, if you have a second account able to loot/salvage or just ride a shuttle to "cover your six".
- Thirdly and most importantly use d-scan religiously (if I could run d-scan like a radar - continuously - without having to click on the scan button I would).
- Fourthly, if you can't keep your "head" on a swivel then stop doing mission, stop pimping your ships and perhaps stop PvE altogether.
The standard rule for EVE - which we know and love so well - there is no such thing as safe space. Hi-sec is only "safer" to some extent with the basic premise that if they want to gank you they will - come hell or high water. 2-6 T1 fitted Talos/Tornados will make short work of any pimpfit moron flying foolheartedly through space thinking they are invulnerable.
Again - you can't avoid it (as erroneously stated in the title), you can only, to some extent, minimize the risk. [sarcasm] Goons suck. TEST suck. Sov sucks. The Mittani is a nullbear. Nullbears FTW. Oh right this is EVE. [/sarcasm] |

I just let them take what they want and don't shoot. It's only new players or people who don't know what they're trying to do that fall for it. Those people are often the ones who never read forums and think that they can survive EVE without knowing anything going on around them. "Don't count on others for help. blueing wreck would only protect against solo grieffer, cause even if they steal from you wreck, they go suspect, and only them.
tho, the common thing is that they'll steal, using fast frig so they can gtfo, and the second you engage, they'll grab a pvp fitted ship, and you are history.
but their fleet will not be able to assist them but by repping.
i recall that a year ago i used to have one of those guys trying to trick me this way, until one day i falled for it on purpose.
he warped out and got back in a sleipnir, but surprise, this was not the pve machariel he had scanned a couple time earlier that same week
sleipnir, i present you a nano pvp fitted machariel, machariel: sleipnir.
i let you guess what happened later

Damn, I have been found out.
Actually this is a post that cuts both ways. Being safe (or rather "safer") vs getting ganked. I see so much idiocy (even my own) on the forums and in game.
I reckon that any poster on this forum has be a little like a comedian, he has to know how to make fun of himself, fend off hecklers and just give people a good time. And let go of preconceived notions of what EVE is supposed to be and not supposed to be. [sarcasm] Goons suck. TEST suck. Sov sucks. The Mittani is a nullbear. Nullbears FTW. Oh right this is EVE. Ah yes, the end solution that isn't so common but ever so satisfying. I usually find that gankers/baiters are confronted with a pvp situation take things in better stride than PvE pilots when they lose. They already are accustomed to risk v. reward aspects of the situation. Carebears, Nullbears and CCP, oh my. |

i was of course happy to have tricked him and killed him, but since the fight was interesting (he showed good pvp skills during the fight), he admitted that even having lost a ship, he was also happy that we had a good fight |

I remember the time I fell for this one.
Some dude comes in my mission area flying a Zephyr and stealing from my wrecks. I got all WTF, imma blow up his limited edition ship, forgetting that the thing has the signature radius of a pea, and I'm never going to be able to hit it with large guns.
You know what happened next. Was a good lesson. |

Not as smart as you think. at moderate distance, high tracking ACs or sentries would have instapopped him. At short distance, drones would have killed him off before he can click warp, with little warning as they close in the small gap.

Hasn't this changed now with the new crimewatch?
ie. now it works like: person steals from you and goes suspect you shoot suspect and also go suspect friends of theif come and shoot you, also go suspect you die

Just read down a little farther to Limited Engagements, which is where they go and say "You know when we said 'There is no A-to-B aggression flagging anymore, just global flags'? Yeah, that's not actually true." This is EVE - Everybody Versus Everybody.

a dardevil could be an interesting platform, no problem killing warriors with it, and you still pack enough punch to eat trough mission ship up to some BC (even BS if failed fit) |

Not this!! Because if they go suspect, you can shoot them even with safety on green!

You say this scathingly but this is good advice.
Don't pimp fit your ship beyond all pimpiness.
To run lvl 4's in hisec and once you are reasonably skilled, you don't need all that expensive equipment. It really doesn't get you much and isn't really needed.
Have some faction stuff but T2 is almost as good and makes your gank-attractiveness much less.
I need to follow my advice from time to time because as time goes on my ship gets more pimp-like and then I am reminded to get it back down. Just yesterday 10 destroyers tried to gank me in a mission (I lived :) ) and when I looked at my ship I saw that my ship had defintiely become more pimpmobile-like and had to tone it back down.
Once you start making isk you want to have really nice stuff...but it is JUST NOT NEEDED. Proper tool for the job. Resist the urge to pimp it up. |

Had the joys of some lads try the old bait the mission bear thing with me in a faction fit tach nightmare and corp mate in a drake.
First one scans us down and comes in an arby and steals from wreaks, me and corp mate deciding on whether to pop him and a guardian shows up on dscan in the previous mission room so go what the hell. Start on the arby, guardian warps in and starts repping with arby neuting me, could hardly hit the arby so flip over and give the guardian pilot a bit of a shock when I 4 volley him :)
Guardian pilot sent this to corp mate;
"that nightmare burned my ship whoeha nice shooting !"

I missioned in a true high sec island for nearly 3 years.
in that time I had ONE ninja looter , I turned the wrecks blue and within 15 minutes it was all over.
never once did I even remotely come close to being suicide ganked for my 7b isk nightmare.
if you fly a super expensive ship in high sec, you WILL loose it sooner or later |
