Edited by: Zyyrus on 09/08/2005 13:44:23 american english is just slanged British english, ain't and ya'll ar the first two that come to mind
I'm Canadain btw, and have an English step-father, who has loads of English, and american friends, who are all part of a very large clan (VS-UK), i was once part of it, but quite awhile back, we now use there TS voice server for EVE, so it's kinda funny to hear americans, English, and Canadians, all speaking at once, you can really hear the major differences in the accents, and i also work in an american support call center, so i'm very quickly getting used to thick taxan accents
(oh and theres a couple of scotish guys to)
few more things i thought of at thw last second, "ya" originally came from the German "ja" (which means yes, and j's are pronounced as y's in German .... in case u didn't know)
there are even different dialects of Canadain english in different parts of the country, i'm originally from New brunswick, now live in Ontario, and there are subtle differences in accents and dialect, it seems to me that dialect is very different in northen and southern England

According to my phonetics teacher years ago, american english pronunciation is probably a lot closer to 'old' (16-17th century) english pronunciation.
He looked like phil collins though, so he might have been wrong (s-s-sudio!)

as far as i know that's true (excluding the dialects like ya'll and aint ofcourse)
a lot of ppl think american english is a 'mutated' form of english, while it's actually the other way around
however, i personally like the british version better (btw i'm from holland, germanic languages FTW!, except ofcourse that something like 30% of the commonly used words and expressions are english now :P) i also think that everybody should speak and understand enough english to get by, esspecially in europe (I'm looking at YOU germans and french! )

I believe that modern english pronunciation is due to an government initiative that was started up at one point (I forget wether it was the victorians or a little further back) after it was realized that for instance : the people from four villages no more than 30 miles apart from each other couldn't understand a word the others said because the pronunciations had all gone off in there own unique directions within those communitys - And thus one pronunciation was settled on and taught to the young.
Some of these english dialects still survive, particularly up north but they are on the decline a lot more in this modern age of comunications. . ----- Apologys for any rambling that may have just occurred.

Edited by: Skaaj on 23/08/2005 12:57:36 I don't think people who have grammatical and spelling mistakes in their own signatures, are allowed to respond to this thread:
Zyrla: its apologies not apologys Demarcus: it is not correct English to use the word 'and' after a comma, the comma is there to remove the need for the 'and'
And while I'm at it I think Americans should be stopped from responding to this thread as well, seeing as American and English are two, quite different languages.
(Damn z's everywhere and doubling up on letters for no reason)

Anyone know the historical reason for why American misses out a lot of the extra letters??
Actually, Merriam Webster, waaay back in the 19th century used the then-current spellings that the English did in his ground-breaking dictionary. In the intervening 200 years, the English have added a bunch of extra letters to their words, probably to differentiate themselves from us upstart rebels.

It's all because of the BBC. The King's English (now the Queen's) was more or less adopted as the official dialect of British English, because it was the only one that was nationally heard on the radio (and later TV). Now it's called BBC English because it has become so common and accepted.
Pedantically yours,
