from http://poeticstanziel.blogspot.ca/2013/02/the-xander-phoena-sessions.html
Who is Xander Phoena? He's a new breed of Scot, as comfortable sitting down with the ladies for a cup of tea and a scone smothered in clotted cream[1] as he is wandering the decks of an offshore oil rig asking the real men doing real jobs if they happen to have a copy of Pitch Perfect. He's that new breed of Scot more comfortable sipping on a light and airy white wine spritzer than a tumbler of 25 year old single malt Glenmorangie.
Xander Phoena is a spiky haired bastard who many affectionately refer to as The MacTani[3]. It has been said that Xander is equally the man-specimen to his Yank counterpart, The Mittani.
Xander Phoena is also the host of Crossing Zebras. The pre-eminent EVE Online podcast for people looking for more than just two hosts (and their assortment of guests) hitting the record button and then talking about whatever comes to mind. Xander does crazy, off-kilter things like having topics, remaining on topic, and something called critical analysis[4].
Xander intends to use his skills and gifts as an orator and interviewer to bring CSM candidates more intimately to the community. Every CSM8 candidate has a standing offer to a thirty minute interview[5] with Xander Phoena. This is the sort of interview neither candidates or voters should pass up on. Each promises to be an insightful reveal into the platforms and thinking of each and every candidate.
Although every single interview is going to be interesting and revealing unto itself, the two I'm most looking forward to at the moment are the Ripard Teg and Mynnna interviews. These two are definitely top-runners for CSM8 seats[6]. Both are slippery chaps. I've found it hard to nail down their opinions on specific topics, especially regarding highsec.
Ripard Teg is definitely someone that does not like to make clear and concise opinions known. He's maddeningly oblique anytime he writes about controversial topics. He gives himself an out if it transpires that he's come down on the wrong side of popular opinion. As an example, a commenter calls him on a particular point, and Ripard responds "[I'm] also exaggerating like crazy. [I] say so right in the post." Except what Ripard actually wrote was "Am I exaggerating to make a point? Maybe just a little. But... just maybe I'm not exaggerating at all." He gives himself the opportunity to step away from an expressed opinion, if necessary. This waffling can also be found in his Garth, alter-ego posts. He uses Garth for his most incendiary topics, stating that Garth may or may not reflect the opinions of Ripard Teg. Whether Garth is a reflection of Ripard depends on the level of agreement (or disagreement) to the point being made.
I certainly think Ripard will make a great CSM8 candidate, even when I don't agree with his positions. But he really needs to take a recognizable stance on particular issues. We have already spent an entire year with Hans Jagerblitzen, who became well-known for bending whichever way the winds of popular opinion were blowing. I don't think we need somebody to replace Hans in that regard.
My hope is that Xander can nail down some positions from Ripard. Not let him get away with evasiveness.
And then there is Mynnna. About all we know of him is that he's Goonswarm's candidate, and that he's particularly good at crunching numbers, to the point where he's able to find flaws in game mechanics and exploit the hell out of them[7]. Beyond that, it's hard to know exactly where he stands. He seems to come down easily on both sides of an argument. It's great that he can see issues from the position of the players and well as from the position of CCP as a business, but it hardly tells us which way he's likely to argue at the end of the day.
Given the latest CSM7 minutes and verbiage coming from CSM7 representatives in recent interviews, it is not looking like nullsec is going to get much love in 2013. Mynnna is looked upon as a nullsec candidate. so if nullsec is not going to be a focus for the next two expansions (things can change though, and Mynnna's role here will no doubt be crucial), it is important to know his stances on issues outside of nullsec.
Like Ripard, my hope is that Xander can pull more concrete ideas and positions from Mynnna during his session.
There are, of course, other important sessions. With Malcanis. Marc Scaurus. Mike Azariah, Roc Wieler, and Mangala.
So watch for The Xander Phoena Sessions coming February/March 2013. Or pay attention here, because I'll likely be blogging my reaction to each and every interview.
***
[1] What is clotted cream? I know what a blood clot is, which happens to be something the British also enjoy; see blood pudding.
[3] Perhaps only I refer to him as such. But this certainly needs to be a thing.
[4] This sort of discourse suggests that Xander may have been educated outside of Scotland. He certainly digresses from what usually accounts for Scottish debate: "Ach, McDonnall! If ye dinnae chaynge yer mynd, ah will batter yer heid in wi' this 'ere rock."
[5] Xander has stated that every interview will run 30 minutes. No more. No less. Hopefully he doesn't stick to this limit unnecessarily. If the questions and follow-ups push an interview to longer, then so be it. He should really give himself the time necessary to get the answers he wants from the interviewee, and not let time constraints hamper quality. Some candidates are going to be more wordy and evasive than other candidates.
[6] Well, Mynnna is all but guaranteed the top spot on the council. But Ripard is certainly a top-runner for one of the remaining Iceland Seven seats.
[7] Mynnna's role in breaking wide open the loyalty point payout system for faction warfare during the summer of 2012 is now legendary. Amarr Militia - Fweddit - http://fweddit.com Poetic Discourse - http://poeticstanziel.blogspot.com |

If he actually gets to iceland perhaps something that entertaining. Of course everyone seems to be well mannered there, so I doubt much would be too exciting, But it would be fun to see him give one of his speeches in front of CCP or so. Or if CCP allowed him to help write a dev post for hi sec be pretty funny.
Lower then that and maybe more likely he will just go around spamming his CSM tag and saying to accept him to save hi sec and help him separate the chaff from the wheat or spewing his ideas I suppose.

Couple of things. Firstly, the tongue was firmly in cheek when I wrote that one-liner at midnight last night as a very mini intro to James' interview. Secondly, are you an alt of Poe? You have virtually word-for-word C&Ped what he said to me on twitter earlier today :)
Look, go to James' blog (minerbumping.com) and have a look around. Take a good hard look at the likes of the About page. Did I have preconceptions of what James was based on the research I had done on him? You're damned right I did. And it would appear an awful lot of others felt the same way from the emails I received regarding James 315 before I did this interview. As for him not stating he hates highsec? Well he says he doesn't but all of his actions state otherwise. For me, actions speak louder than words.
I'm sorry you (and Poe) didn't enjoy the interview. What makes me pleased is the vast majority of people, including James himself and the rest of the NWO camp, appear to have appreciated the tough questioning which allowed James to clear the air regarding the troll thing and his platform. You can't please 100% of the people 100% of the time I guess. www.crossingzebras.com |

I can agree that actions speak louder than words, but none of James' actions show that he hates highsec - rather they show that he hates the ISK-for-nothing, entitled attitude of carebears and themeparkers in highsec. If we define highsec as a place for that attitude and those people, then I guess James does hate highsec. Personally I don't think that anywhere in EVE is a suitable place for them.

I think the fact that he was able to answer so well despite my very tough questioning actually paints him in an even stronger light than had I went easier on him. I'm guessing that's why he is so pleased with how it went in the end.

I fixed an unfortunate typo for you.
That said, I have to agree with Kainotomiu in that there was an obvious and apparent bias against James. One of the fun things about the New Order is the amount of satire used at almost every level of it, and it appears that you may have missed out on some or all of it during your research period. Pointing out that, right now, the amount of protections afforded by HighSec can annoy even self-proclaimed carebears who can do little to rectify annoyances they encounter and pointing out the imbalances present throughout the game isn't really a hating platform.
The interview wasn't bad, but I think it could have been better served by pressing him on some of his methods and clarifying his positions, rather than pressing him on if he's a troll or not. A fair number of people do miss out on how the satire of the Order works on a daily basis, and digging into that may have helped some people understand his position more clearly. 315 4 CSM 8 |

Now that we know he's serious (thank you Xander, great work on the interview!) I think it's safe to vote for the guy. James 315 did a great job representing himself and his platform. If you're not already part of a bloc, this is the best guy for CSM8. |

I could have perhaps pushed him more on his platform and his positions but to be honest, I don't know how much more information I could have got from him. He went into his platform in a LOT of detail - far more than I (or anyone else I'd imagine) would have expected.
One man's satire is another man's troll. The line is very fine and often comes down to personal perspective. I don't apologise for clarifying his position here. It seems like people like Karl above were unsure and now they are actually going to vote for him. From James' perspective, mission accomplished. www.crossingzebras.com |

The attitude at the beginning was dismissive rather than inquisitive. Terms like "hater" and "troll" made your subjective opinion of your interviewee very clear. Those are nothing short of insults, it would be like asking a candidate "Are you stupid?"

What's up with CSM candidates with numbers in their names always being trolls? First D3, now J315. Note to myself, never take anyone with number in their name seriously.
On to the mater. J315 argued his point so badly I'm sure he was deliberately bad. He must have been trolling given how self conflicting and absurd was nonsense that came out of his mouth.
Where to start?
1. he argues h.s. mining is as or more profitable then similar 0.0 alternatives. This is simply factually incorrect, solo mack miner in h.s. will be turning some 10-15m /h, solo ratter doing anoms in 0.0 in similarly priced ship will be turning some 50-60 m/h, miner mining in 0.0 that selects proper ore types can do abut double what h.s miner can do
2. J315 claims h.s. activities need rebalancing to reflect profit to risk of those activities but when it comes to examples he suggesters:
- nerfing h.s. activities that are least profitable and least safe (belt mining that brings about 10-15m /h and comes with constant exposure of ship in belt )
- he mostly ignores mission runners that generate mediocre profits with mediocre safety (about 30m /h in a pocket that has to be probed out first by gankers)
- and absurdly he actually endorses most profitable and least dangerous activity in all of EVE, hub market trading. People that need never to undock and easily tun billions a day.
If he was serious about risk to reward he would go against h.s. market traders, demanding imposition of some sort of high frequency trade tax or some such ****, he certainly would not be wasting his time sperging nonsense about evil miners.
3. J315 claims 0.0 is locked in napfest because of h.s. miners, which must be the troll of a year, and all troll lovers should vote for him for CSM just for that claim. He will be wordy replacement for D3.
4. J315 states that not only are moon goo incomes reasonable but in fact hey are not enough and 0.0 needs to be made even more profitable despite it being vastly more profitable then either h.s. or lowsec
5. He talks about miner safety but has nothing to say about 0.0 entities abusing NPC corps to avoid wardecks. If there is a problem with safety in h.s. it is in NPC corps and not in h.s. as a whole. Any h.s. PC miner corp can be wardecked for a modest fee usually below price of single gank fit tornado. If he was serous about it he would demand either forcing players with above of say 3m SP out of NPC corps, or imposition of market, contract and station trade tax on people in NPC corps. But he does not do that. Why? Because he is a troll.

Nope. My subjective opinion is irrelevant. This guy gets it bang on. I took the perspective of the average guy in Eve, most of which did not think positively about James 315 before that interview. When doing these interviews, it is imperative to ask the questions I feel the player base would want ask. The 36th and (probably) final interview was supposed to be Grand Admiral Simo-Hayha tonight. I had arranged with Simo to interview him at a time suitable for him around 20 minutes ago at 2300 Eve on 1st April. As such, I had spent the hours as I have done with every candidate preparing my interview so I was ready for him. Simo did not show up for the interview at 2300 so by 2305, I jumped onto the client to see if he was around. He explained to me at 2310 that he did not have a microphone and would not be able to conduct the interview. This is 10 past midnight local time when I would have loved to have been in bed. Especially seeing as I am about to head back offshore away from my family for two weeks tomorrow.
It may be worth considering this information when it comes to election day. www.crossingzebras.com |

It seems somehow fitting that (probably) the last person I interview as part of this project is the CCP representative for the CSM, CCP Dolan. While some aspects of the election have went very well, other parts of the process haven't run so smoothly.
http://c-z.me/csm8ccpdolan
Dolan sat down to go over some of the key issues from the CSM8 elections including the following questions:
Why such a short gap between announcing the new election process and voting system and the primary itself? Why are we still in a situation where so many of the playerbase don't know what the CSM is and what do CCP plan on doing about it? Are there any fears that the complicated new voting system may cause voting numbers to drop? What are the differences between what the CSM does and the public perception of what the CSM does? What is the outcome of the 'false positive' endorsement situation? What do you say to those who believe the primary and the STV voting system favour organised nullsec blocs? What is the situation with Fon Revedhort? Why does CSM8 have the lowest number of candidates from any CSM in history? Has CSM7 done a good job in your eyes? What is situation currently with the Dust War Council?
I want to thank Dolan for being frank, open and honest with me during this interview. It was the perfect way to end a long but fun project to try and get as many CSM candidates directly to the Crossing Zebras listeners. I'll write up a proper retrospective on the project tomorrow but for now I want to thank everyone who has took part in the project - those who were interviewed, those who have listened and those who offered encouragement.

Great job. I've listened to almost all of them. (Some not all the way through I have to admit. Not your fault, just gave up on the candidates in those cases.)
Extremely useful and highly recommended.
Several of them changed my mind and directly affected my votes. Job well done.
Thank you very much for the effort. I hope you voted, you glorious but often apathetic bastards! STV working as intended; Pre-elections and Get out the Vote, room for improvement. |

Just wanted to say a massive congratulations to those candidates elected and commiserations to those who didn't make it. If was a fantastic election to be a bystander on.
I met a lot of CSM7 and CSM8 at Fanfest and the ones I met were all awesome. Every one of them. I think CSM8 on paper looks like a great council. Course, CSM9 will be better.... ;) www.crossingzebras.com |
