Here's a quick question: How can training up a skill change the physical composition of armor plates? |

"Flexible Honeycomb Composite Vehicle Armor"
You try to counter the OP's point by posting something that sounds like an obscure breakfast cereal? [img]http://desusig.crumplecorn.com/sig.php?r=*rnd*[/img] Desusigs can be seen on the terribad new forums using bbcode enabling script (scroll down to my post for sig rotation) |

The modules are just n mm plates. In other words you are buying a coating of x alloy or material around your ship. This increases the ships weight, which requires you to recalculate changes in direction and speed and decreases the availability of spare power that the ship may have. It also increases the amount of thrust needed to accelerate your ship and to decelerate your ship.
This skill gives you the necessary knowledge to add that n mm thickness of the plate in a way that decreases the overall mass used to gain that thickness while at the same time maintaining the same protection that just slathering n mm of x material over your ship.
The valid question is, why, when I buy n mm plates with honeycomb skill do I not gain the excess materials. Since when I buy n mm plate I buy that entire mass and don't use all of it on my ship then there should be mass left over. |

Sakura Nihil wrote:"Composite Armor" might be a more subtle way to go. "Armor Honeycombing" literally defeats the purpose of armor, which is to place mass in between yourself and something trying to kill you, by removing said mass.
Composite Armor, by contrast, doesn't create holes in the mass, it instead changes the materials so that they're lighter in weight while having the same strength as say a solid plate.
... and I just went into "Engineer" mode over a game of internet spaceships. ****. Well played internets, well played. It isnt always about the amterial or how much of it you have, sometimes its about how that armor can take the blow. honeycombed armor can take a blow. |

Useful for wormholes.
Can't jump a properly fitted Damnation into a C1 without this skill (unless your smart and offline the plate to jump). Not sure who the hell needs a Damnation in a C1 but hey.. Why not Armor Plate Optimization? You learn where the armor needs to be, and where it doesn't. |

That skill could literally do pretty much anything armor related. Honeycombing is actually a nice distinct sciency name and it's easy to see how it would help to reduce the mass.

It's a solid option, but I don't see it being better either. Armor plate optimization immediately brings to mind CPU or powergrid usage reductions. |

What i want to know is why is the ship weight in tons and the module weight is in kg?
Because 1000 kilogram are exactly one ton? You could also call it a megagram but that would just confuse people. There's nothing a million chinese guys can't do cheaper. |
