Welcome to the sandbox. Eve can be very disheartening when you aren't having fun. I've quit and re-subbed four or five times and am currently on week three of my latest re-sub. OP, there are plenty of things you can do in Eve. But finding your niche can take a lot of time and effort. If you aren't in the mood for it there's not much anyone can say to change your mind - I've been there and will be there again, I'm sure.
Get out of that NPC corp, and find a real corp. Being in a good corp changes everything.
Also try the Sisters of Eve epic arc, it's quite interesting, will make you 10-15 million if I remember, and will have you flying a cruiser at the end of it. Don't Panic.

Dude, he can't afford a Catalyst - how's he supposed to come up with the 500m security deposit required to join goons? So... i started an industry blog at www.derbk.com/eve There i am preparing a guide to all things related to manufacturing. Check it out!

You need to have a long view when you are new to Eve. You cannot grind your skills so there isn't much you can do to be an instant success by yourself. Eventually you will have the skills to make good isk in nearly any venture you choose. But it takes time, so you need a reason to log on and play the game until then. I suggest to focus on what you can do instead of what you cannot. If all you can afford is a frig then do level 1 missions until you can afford a cruiser to run level 2s, etc. Small goals you can achieve in a short time with a long term goal that you keep on the back burner until it's achievable.
If you can't do that you better find a really active Corp with people you enjoy being around.
If you can't do either of those, then maybe Eve isn't for you. |

Do that a couple times and you might find a bit of enjoyment in this game. You mean "pvp". The EVEO forums has declared that it will not recognize: Bumping, Ganking & Awoxing as "pvp". Also of note, the EVEO forums have been declared a free-fire zone. You may be exploded by random badposts and assaulted by internet trolls at any moment. So never post with more sanity than you can afford to lose.
Zol Interbottom wrote:Joran Dravius wrote:Why not join RvB or something like that and go pew pew people? I cant afford to buy a ship and fly around blasting **** that isnt a velator Much fun can be had in a n00bship. I have an alt who *only* flies n00bships - and I have great fun running him. In Nul-Sec.
This is how it works: I took a secondary alt, and stopped his training below the Alpha Clone threshold. I left him in the n00bcorp. If he gets podded, who cares? I've lost nothing. Ship burnt to a crisp? No worries - Free ship at next dock-up. What to do with him? Antagonize folks! I fly him into the deepest reaches of Nul, and stir things up. I create chase scenses. I eject garbage on POS doorsteps, I taunt, I buzz outposts - Anything I can think of to stirr up a good chase. Then I try to escape. I've gotten pretty good at it - I escape more often than I fry. And it's fun. Adrenaline, matching wits, livening up some nul-seccer's day... Give it a try! Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

It might be worth PLEXng yourself. Consider this: It will take some 30-40 hours (in some cases, 60-80 hours) a month to pay for your subscription with ISK, while even a minimum-wage job can pay for it in about 3 hours. If you're able, just buy a PLEX and sell it at Jita (remember to use the Simplified selling view, so you can avoid those nasty taxes), and put the 500m ISK to use.
I started back in May, 2012, and was in a similar position to you at first, until realizing that the time I was grinding for ISK could be spent having some actual fun for about 2 hours' work for me IRL. I bought a PLEX, sold it at Jita (remember to redeem it at Jita... NEVER undock with a PLEX in your cargohold), and things have been much better since.
You will get 400-500m ISK for one PLEX, depending on the current mood of the market. If you join RvB, this will give you more than enough ISK to have some serious fun. When your total ship cost is 2-3m ISK for T2-fit frigs, and 1-2m ISK for T1-fit frigs, that 400-500m ISK is going to last you a good, long while.
If you opt not to go the PvP route (seems like you wouldn't, though... you don't seem to like the PvE, which is quite normal with EvE), the ISK you get from a single PLEX will do wonders to push you along.
Give it a shot. EvE is a fun game, you just can't really grind yourself through it (without going insane, at least). Good luck! |

3 months?
Yeah, you failed hard!
In a week, you should be breezing through L3s in a BC, In 3 weeks, blowing through L4s in a BS for 10-20 million ISK an hour.
Step 1) Do the tutorials. Takes a couple hours. You get millions of easy isk, lots of free ships, and faction standing. Train lots of the little support skills, while leaving racial frig 4 in the training queue to be worked on when nothing else is training. (Man, it is going to be even easier after the summer changes when you will only need frig 3 for destroyer).
Step 2) Cyber1, and +3 implants. You may not be able to afford a full set right now, but grab a couple for, say, intelligence and perception that are the primary of most of the skills being trained as a new player.
Step 3) Do the tutorials 2 more times for the other schools of your chosen race. You don't need to repeat the exploration tutorial if you do not want to as it doesn't give faction standing. More ISK, more ships (sell them, reproccess them, etc.), and more faction standing. In like 6-8 hours of play time you should have more ISK and stuff than you claim to have in after 3 months. Complete you set of +3 implants.
Step 4) Do the tutorials 3x more times for the faction that is allied with your faction... Amar-caldari, Gallente-Minmatar. Ugh... it so sucks doing the same missions 3 times. Yeah.. and if you hate that, then you are going to hate all missioning, because there will be like 12 missions that you run over and over and over and over and.....
Step 5) So, now you are on day 2, have played all of maybe 16 hours. You have racial frig to 4. Now train destroyers and go run the Sister of EVE epic arc. This will probably take a good 10 hours of play time to complete... no need to rush it. Spend a couple days learning cruisers, then BC, and learning medium guns, while still chunking along on support skills.
Step 6) We're now like 4 days in. We've ran the 6 tutorials and the SoE, so have pretty good faction standing. Tran the social skill called connections to 3. You should now have no trouble with standing to pull L3. Start running those L3s in the BC.
Step 7) train toward BS, and be running L4s by 3 weeks into the game.

Zol Interbottom wrote:So i started playing EVE a few months ago, had a little break for guild wars 2, got bored of grinding, came back to shoot more things.
My experience has mostly been in high-sec. I'd had a few little forays into low, usually ended with my **** exploding, but it was good fun all the time. Messed around in wormholes and left some lewd cans around peoples bases.
Started of mining, can mined my way to my first Procurer, also my only one, because somehow no one ever bothered to shoot at me even when i was flying around with nothing fitted but a Strip Miner fitted and a hold full of ore.
Alas i bored of mining, because staring at rocks all day was boring and took so much time to make any real money, so i decided to try my hand at station trading, i trained up my skills and started buying low at one place and selling high at another, it was ok money, but it was time consuming, i stopped that soon enough.
I thought that maybe i should try PI, i mean, if everyone else is making millions while not doing anything, surely i can, i found out very quickly that i was in over my head and lost most of my money, ehh, it happens.
So then i decided to try and be useful, shot down in seconds because no one trusts a 6 month old character and believes that someone named "Zol Interbottom" could possibly be a main, although i made some money doing it regardless.
Eventually i fell down onto running missions, and i ran those missions, and i ran and ran and ran those missions, eventually a nice person in mission chat gave me some money to buy a proper ship for running L3's after i asked if my Catalyst could run them, so i ran more missions and realized that i was still a while away from L3's, so i eventually gave up on that, i couldn't grind my way through them until they were profitable in any real sense of the word so i stopped while i was only mostly behind.
So here i am, 12.7 million in my wallet, less than 50m worth of ships and 10m worth of junk after 3 months of actual subscription.

How is that the moral?
The real moral is, don't waste time grinding L1 missions for a pittance of ISK and tiny, tiny corp standings increases so that you can someday run higher level missions. Use the tutorials, SoE epic arc, and social skills (maybe a few tags) to get faction standing so that you can jump right to L3s, if not L4s.
Make more ISK in an hour of L4s than you can make in a month of L1s. |

Thank you OP for this detailed write-up of your experiences. I have been where you now are, but I still was intrigued by the potential my character had in the first few months. Having long since attained said potential, and now looking for new challenges in the game, I'll remind the newbros in my corp to try and prevent such a hisec burnout.
This is exactly what I feared would happen to myself, but I too found myself resubbing after 3 months, dusting off my Hurricane, and setting out to do some lowsec exploration. A year later I run a small corporation in a miniscule alliance, but I'm having a blast playing with these dudes, making some ISK together and failing at everything else.
EDIT: Tagging along for standings in corpmates L3 / L4 missions after doing a single L1 mission yourself is the way to go. Some people see this as piggyback riding, but it's not, and the game is actually designed for it. |
