The debate about popping or not popping roids is an old one. It's interesting to note however that experienced miners such as myself usually dismiss the idea. There is a system where my alt used to mine Massive scordite every evening. One of the belts had a position where you could get to five such roids without moving.
I wasn't the only one in the area that knew that. Everyone mined them 'till they popped and guess what? They came back in the exact same position. They came back at such speed as to mean it was unusual not to find them there every evening. -- (Battle hardened miner)

Am I the only one who thinks the roid scanner could do with some love? Maybe mine is bugged, but I can't set the distance to say 11k, or see how far away each roid is from me. All I can see is that they are within the radius of the scanner and how much is in each one.

Also when you're in a Covetor, trying not to pop roids is pretty much impossible because the lasers pull in so damn much ore per cycle.

It's called a Survey Scanner and it's pretty low tech (don't think it's been updated since beta!).

the roid scanner is okay but it is difficult to discern which roids relate to the resuts. so i think it needs some love to make it more useful pretty please show it some love

If you're strip mining (ie mining every roid within your reach) then it's perfectly OK to pop the roids.
The question about not popping the roids is more about going into a low sec belt, removing all the bistot/dark ochre or other lowish security ore and then moving on.
I mine in 0.1-0.3 and I just find a good spot in an asteroid belt and start mining the closest asteroid to me, when it pops I move onto the next closest, until there's nothing left within range. Then I move to another belt and repeat the process.
Don't worry about popping Veldspar, Scordite, Plag or Omber, there are plenty of those about, the rule/convention about not popping asteroids is more to do with the lower security ores.
