There not requried but its easier to have an alt than try to organise another player to do something tedious like haul or whatever.
I have 5 accounts will all characters slots filled except 1 :) |

I used to have one character, one I used for mining, then pvp. Then I wanted to manufacture and invent stuff, and you can't do that on one account dedicated to PVPing unless you are two or immortal, so I made another through the miracle of birth. Then I read about people who get successful in terms of ISK and suddenly it's easy for them to get multiple accounts and pay for them with plex. Scouting alts, PVP alts, mission running alts, trading alts, capital alts, spy alts, along with main accounts.
So... the real question is... how many actual players are on the eve server? |

Is this actually required to get total enjoyment out of the game? Is it not possible to just have one character and focus on it?
Do the majority of players have alts?
In a very real sense, Eve is 'pay to win'.
Because players who fork out the cash for those extra accounts have a massive advantage especially in low/null sec and even more so when caps and supers are involved.

It's relatively easy to make 1 B ISK/hour. So you're not actually paying to win, you're 'playing to win' and some fools are spending actual money for basically nothing at all. |

What advantage do they have that someone cannot get without paying a cent?
Extra accounts? Make Friends and you'll have the same number of accounts and not take the efficiency hit you take from multiboxing. This is EVE - Everybody Versus Everybody.

What about if you do both? Get all your friends to multibox 10-15 accounts too then your fleet will be pro. I would much rather be in a fleet with 5-10 guys than a fleet with 300, where you can't even undock without explaining how to fit a drake and how to not jump a gate. - |

I have an alt who is in 0.0, but I never felt that I needed two characters. I just like having one who doesn't get caught up in all the drama of the 0.0 lifestyle so when this one is in highsec the other is in 0.0 and vice versa so I can take a break from that. |

Sure, but the cost of that is a likely all or nothing situation if SHTF (because it's hard to burn in 10 different directions out of a bubble when you're multiboxing). Also, I don't know how easy iSBoxer makes multiboxing logi or any of the other support roles.
It's also still not an advantage that cannot be gained without spending a single extra penny, because you can organize 300 people so that nobody in the fleet is too much of a windowlicker. (I haven't seen anyone have a problem figuring out how to fit a fleet ship (in fleet chat) since everybody started using standardized doctrines.) This is EVE - Everybody Versus Everybody.

not required. just really really helps.
one of the accidental beauties of EVE is it is made in a way that allows multiple clients controlled by the same person.
multi-monitor gaming wasn't a "thing" and screen resolution wasn't very high in 2003, so there's no way CCP saw alt gameplay happening from the beginning, unless they have some people with -really- great vision http://themittani.com/ | http://evenews24.com/ || Vincent Athena-á||-áflycatcher waaaaat |

When it comes to alts, I am convinced that Tyler Durden was right: you don't have alts, your alts own you. This is especially true if you try financing those alt accounts using PLEX and you're not raking in over 1B ISK/month per account.
The main example that people will give for where it's "required" to have alts is moving supercaps that you own personally (and you have noone in your own corporation that you'd trust to light a cyno for you) Day 0 advice for new players: Day 0 Advice for New Players |

There are some "jobs" in Eve that no one really wants to do. Hauling, fleet boosting, that kind of stuff. For people who play the game long enough to need those things done regularly, they often pick up an alt or two. Founding member of the Belligerent Undesirables movement. |

There are no jobs in EVE (or anywhere) that no one really wants to do. There are only some jobs that no one really wants to do for the amount of compensation that they will get for doing them. I don't just mean dollars or ISK, either. A "hero tackler" in a Rifter gets a hundred pats on the back for landing point on a carrier before it can jump out, but an industry player probably can't even get someone in a Rifter to scout for him for two jumps, not even after he mines enough tritanium to build a damn carrier. And, when he dies because nobody was willing to scout for him in his industrial ship, he'll probably get [expletive deleted] at. In such a circumstance, ask yourself why "no one wants to do" those jobs, like mining, hauling, building, etc.
It gets worse when other people start up alts to do those jobs, because a PVP player doesn't really care about tritanium or blueprint copies or ISK/jump ratios. When he does an industrialists' job, he will devalue it. It's all just extra ISK for his main to play with, anyway. He's not playing hauler because he likes it. He will just skill the alt to do the task at maximum efficiency, and then perform that service free of charge for his main character. And, some noob miner or hauler or industrialist cannot compete with a super specialized alt character that is doing the same job for free and is completely trusted (because he is his own client) and who has the dedicated support of all your other characters. It is at this point that we can safely say the game is broken.
Imagine the cost of tritanium without alts, or the cost of datacores, or the price to have your stuff hauled around. Imagine how valuable a noob in a suicide scouting ship would be if you didn't have your alt 5 jumps ahead in a covops. Imagine how valuable other players would be if you didn't have the ability to do everything yourself at maximum efficiency. Imagine the concepts of teamwork and trust in the context of such an interdependent system.
tl;dr: Alts are taking all the jerbs. |

Mayhaw Morgan that's an interesting view, and I never considered that or heard it before. it still won't budge the fact alts are good for supporting the game through multiple subs... http://themittani.com/ | http://evenews24.com/ || Vincent Athena-á||-áflycatcher waaaaat |

That's where you go off the rails. Most people who run alts for income do not consider the minerals they mine(trade ISK they earn, Hauling time they spend, etc) to be free.
Hauling is a low income/hr profession because it can be an incredibly high income/effort profession (Accept contract, undock, press the A butan, collect ISK) and has a very low risk of loss.
By the way, the Hero tackler did a service for the group. What service to the group is the miner doing?
Anyway, you know what happens when you do one of those jobs well?* You get noticed and singled out for those same accolades you claim are the exclusive domain of the Hero tackle.
*Even mining, though that tends to be more of a group accolade, unless you're running dozens of accounts. This is EVE - Everybody Versus Everybody.
