That combined with the secret city of london, is enough to convince me that I live in the most complicated nation on earth. Unless anyone has a more complicated suggestion.

At least with your system the people at the very top have some dignity. Or if not, some nice clothes and jewels. It's not secret, it pre-dates England, let alone Britain as a fortress/trading ground and had a negotiated surrender with William the Conqueror, hence the basis of Common Law and the rule of the status quo. To remove the City you would have to go into the Magna Carta as that's the earliest document we can find today that shows Londonium existed. I think the City would technically be under Common Law allowed to secede from the UK through such a breach.
Just as I understand it, hence why noones poked it with a big political stick yet, it was part of the Hanseatic league back in the day.

All it would really change is from the UK being a Theocracy that imitates perfectly a constitutional monarchy, to an explicit liberal democracy. If we need to keep the Queen to pretend to be more dignified than we are, more fool the rest of the world I suppose. Also seems cruel to keep criticise Harry for living his life and expect him to do as he's told. Its cruel and undignified to control a family like that.
Also Charles..... just Charles.

Well the author is being a bit facetious in Congress 'blaming' the president. Its really the opposition party blaming the rival party with the President serving as his parties figurehead. The president is thus being treated as the lead representative of his party, not the sole and only culprit. Its just he will always be his parties most visible leader to focus blame.

South Americans LOSE THEIR MINDS whenever you speak about there being 7 continents.
Not really, we lose our minds when certain people refer to their SINGLE country as the whole continent, which is quite diff Inner Sayings of BrujoLoco: http://eve-files.com/sig/brujoloco |

See, this is where you start splitting hairs. No one in the US thinks the US makes up the entire North American continent...at least no one who's not a complete and utter moron. Where do you hear this garbage? For some unknown reason, many people in South America have this idea that Americans have never heard of Canada and Mexico, and those are the ones who completely lose their minds over the fact that they're two separate continents. It's like this huge inferiority complex just because "America" isn't synonymous with either continent. Hence the term, "The Americas".
I've heard people say, "Hey, we're Americans too because we live in South America!" Well, 500 years ago maybe, but not anymore. You don't hear Canadians saying they're American because they live in North America. |

By the same token, call a Russian, a Swiss or a Brit a European and watch the reaction.
I think back then USA was a politically neutral term between the 13 seceding colonies, the term for the sum of the colonies at the time was "Virginia", which was changed to the generic United States of XYZ. Other United States were for example, Belgium.
Witness the present polarisation of the word Europe.

I've never heard of anyone calling a Russian a European, though. Brits I can understand because they've never felt they were part of mainland Europe, and by most accounts aren't. They may not be "Europeans" geographically-speaking, but culturally I'd say they were. But Russian? Calling a Russian a European would be like calling an Asian a European.
Where do we draw the line? Are the Finns European then, known for the Saami people? What about the Greeks? I think the term "European" is only used to group nations geographically, not culturally. That's where western, eastern, northern, and southern European descriptions come in. |

European would be of nations and cultures of the European continent, of which 40% is in Russia. The former capital of St Petersburg was built for better communications via the Baltic with the rest of Europe. Been taking a few Russian classes, and from what I've gathered from the foreign exchanges, they are European. The most powerful European country and the biggest nation on Earth, but still at its core a European nation, the amount of Russian derived from French is enlightening.
The British is self explanatory, there is an inconvenient puddle in the way that gives us an island mentality, but which has proven to be useless since the Chunnel was built.
And yes the Finns are Scandanavian and hence European, the one that sticks out like a sore thumb is Turkey though.

St. Petersburg. Completely overlooked it. Interesting insight into all this.
My questions are by and large rhetorical, as Scandinavia is of course a part of Europe. I'm just playing devil's advocate due to the wide gap between the cultures within Europe. Turkey, however, as you said sticks out like a sore thumb...mainly because it's not a European country. It has a lot of European influences and in many ways is very modern, but it simply isn't a European country. It has tried to gain partnership to the EU but has been rejected every time due to several factors. |

Actually, we Dutch are so mellow and so not nationalist that we don't care at all, we'll use both Holland and Netherlands as if it were the same. We honestly don't give a crap about stuff like that, our country is too small to have such a big ego about it. Amat victoria curam. Excellence in everything.
