well i started my free trial today.
Did a bit of research and found out that charisma is the weakest trait so made an Amarrian lady with lots of will perc int and mem.
Since then I've researched level 1 of instant recall, and lvl 2 of amarr frigates, logged tonight starting on lvl 3 frig.
now i'm a bit overwhelmed at the choices of skills from here, ok, so learning is vital, then stats (to lvl 3 or so afaik)
ideally i want to create a character who can either research or construct (some basic tradeskill) and still not be a completely gimped fighter. I choose mining and refining as my initial training. Have i*****ed up already? Is it possible to make a hybrid char? I'm not looking to be leet in pvp but its something i'd like to dabble in on the side.
FINALLY, all i'm doing at the mo is jumping to one station, and jumping back for my agent. I'm still in the storyline missions (about to start number 3 of the second contact). when can i start tradeskilling :D
Thanks
Chris
p.s soz about the RUBBISH grammar its late here

The character concept is pretty similar to my own. Basically, to be an all-rounder, so I never get bored of the same old thing. Nothing wrong with that; though you do need to focus in certain directions from time to time. Feel free to look me or the corp I belong to, up in game.

I'm pretty new too and wish I'd done the research you did so that Charisma wasn't my highest attribute. :) That being said you really shouldn't worry about messing up by choosing the wrong skills. As far as I can see it's just not possible to gimp your character in EVE the way it is in other games. Everybody can learn everything eventually. It's just a matter of picking the skills that interest you to learn first.

For new players some specialisation is a must imo. There are too many skills to become a jack of all trades and be competitive in all things.
Best is to pick 2 things maybe 3. Like miner/refiner combined with mission running

i'm an all rounder, you actually need surprisingly little to be a 'decent' combat pilot since most of the time luck/numbers are more important than actual skills.

If I were you, I would specialise in your primary thing of production/research, so spend most time on that, and just get your gunnery skills to some basic/medium level, which is fine with lasers. Sure you won't be great in combat, but in a group you would be fine. ========================

Well the beauty of the game is you can play it how you want.
Me personally I felt the crux of the game was control of resources (ore) so I feel it is most advantageous for a new player to specialize in mining.
I mean money is always gonna be a necessity, having a solid financial base, being able to FEED on resources, is pretty much critical.
The second thing I feel is important is being able to drive a hauler to move stuff around and trade.
After those two, I would just spend the rest of my time concentrating on self-defense, being able to fight, etc.

My advice, considering the path you want to take.
Get learning skills when you can, and focus on mining, refining skills early. Getting them up to 4 will help you with making money early on, and with production later on.
After that, get into a Cruiser and Industrial ship.
Then, your pretty juch open, go more industry/science skills for production, or combat skills, and run missions.
