I was just curious, is it set that that range because of the difficulties in rendering or keeping a sphere/grid of that size stable/non-laggy?
I have no idea if this is even relevant, but i thought of locking range creating a sphere around the ship, and imagined the volume of that area along with some comparables.
200km = 25,132,741km-¦ 250km = 49,087,385km-¦ (the current max lock range) 300km = 134,695,785km-¦
im not a great mathematician, so i dont know if this is an exponential increase in area or whatever, but it certainly gets fecking big quickly.
Is this also the reason that Rokh's are always going to be a second rate sniper ship?
throw some maths and science at me!

Considering the volume of a sphere is: V = 4/3 * pi * r^3 it is most surely a n^3 growth. But I highly doubt that the covered volume has anything to do with the locking cap at 250 km. I am not really sure why it is ther though. It might have to do with growth of numbers after that point, for the calculation of tracking etc.
Just some random idea. |

it's actually 249.
you can't lock stuff at 250.

A grid can become really large if you make it bigger. Dropping cans just before falling off grid or something like that makes it bigger. The Gridfu pdf that the Goons made talks about it. Not sure if its still true these days. I don't see why it would have changed.
They probably kept it down to 250km just cause they didn't think anyone would need more than that and didn't want so some crazy bugger making a ship that could snipe from 500km without anyone else getting him.
Also there were heaps of sniping battleship fleets in null at one stage. Maybe someone from back then could answer this better.. But I remember talk of them been mostly over 200km. |

yah, im not trying to argue the practicality or viability of a sniper fleet in the current age of EVE, just that if our guns can fire further than our sensors can lock something is wrong |

You can fire with most real weapons much further than you can actually aim. However, it would be intresting if we could lock much further, it would be a nice part of the coming hybrid balance, since caldari ships could be real snipers. |

Not sure I like the idea of tacklers at a gate and something with XL guns sitting 350km from it. |

at that range, with that size gun, any normal ship would have plenty of time to slowboat back to the gate |

I'm sure it was more than 250km lock range a long time ago (2004?) but I can't for the life of me remember why it changed. ECM maybe? Can't remember but I think jammers didn't have an optimal/falloff back then and that resulted in insane jamming ranges.
Pretty sure it was to do with ECM but not 100%. |

It was Blackbirds back then matey - or maybe a Scorpion. So no this isn't because of Falcon
Edit - anyway I probably have the reason wrong, insane ECM at stupid ranges is something I remember though. |

Actually yeah I think I remember now - people were sitting out at 350-400km off the gate and jamming, nothing could snipe that far so they reduced the lock range for all ships. That rings bells. The only limit years ago, used to be whether you were visible or not.
Back in the day I remember WRWR in his geddon locking my Buzzard as I moved around the 350+ KM away from the station in Agil. He was being boosted of course and only lost lock when I went off his grid. (Not this char)
They locked it at 250Km ages ago, but I forget as to the reasons why. But IIRC, many thought 250 was too short.
Edit: ECM back then was based on points, if you had more that the target ship you jammed it permanently. CCP Zulu.....Forcing players to dock at the captain's quarters is a form of what we actually wanted to get through, which is making Incarna a seamless part of the EVE Online experience. |
