These large ships we pilot are full of people, and maybe when we are violencing other people's ships, our crews want in on the action!
A close range ship module that sends a 'boarding party' to the other ship to disable specific ship systems (weapons, navigation, capacitor, you name it).
Make it strictly for longer engagements and a very long spool up time ( a minute or two ). Perfect for longer battleship and capital engagements, POS attacks, etc.
Once activated and after the appropriate timer, the targeted ship / structure begins to suffer sporadic system failure on any of the possibilities mentioned.
This opens up a range of 'ammunition' (raiders) to train and expend.
Countering a boarding party would mean equipping your ship with your own security teams, which could take the form of an appropriate module or cargo-specific item.
Might as well put all these 'marines' and 'militants' as game items to use!

Actually no,the ships aren't full of people,it's just you in your pod controlling everything.

Crew numbers are reduced for capsule ships, not eliminated save for things say frigate sized and smaller.
It's been beaten to death in the fiction forums, trust me there are still crew aboard. Capsuleer interphase eliminates the vast bulk of manpower needed but not all.

My ship is a crew of one. As soon as my pod enters my ship, I turn off the other life support and vent the hull to the vacuum of space. The only secure areas are the area that the pod is in. And the cargo hold only gets protection when I am transporting lifeforms. And even in that case, I barely turn the heat on. I'm going green.
Thank you.

Boarding parties sound awesome, but the question is how to use them...
I would love to see a small team of dust bunnies enter through dome sort of boarding torpedo to take out critical systems aboard the ship. The team could vary in size according to.the target ships size and the attacking ships size. Anywhere from 1 to 6 strong sounds right. No additional clones, your on your tod with your boarding buddies. You die, your out.
Either way, I think there should be a defence, regardless of whether a module is fitted for it or not. If you fit a boarding module yourself, you can defend with your own team. Failing that, there should be an AI defending, either crewmen or drones.
Even if there is no crew aboard, like in small frigates, there would still be corridors and such, for maintenance and such.
The question then is, what happens to the boarded ship of you could take out the pod? I would love to commandeer ships but I think that would too far, as cool as it would be. Additional salvage or loot maybe? MODULAR DRONES

this is probably not going to get much support because it sounds like too much effort... really? a boarding party?... if you want that kinda action hunt yourself up an old copy of SpaceHulk by GamesWorkshop and have a blast, but this is just too roleplayish and brings up questions of getting your boys back 'home' before you pop that other ship
sorry, I would love to support this, but i can't |

Well, most PVP happens too fast for it to make much sense, but perhaps this is more useful for capital engagements and tower / station assaults?
POS becomes vulnerable, a DUST match is spawned at that location. Attackers win and tower resistances crumble, that kind of thing. Defenders win and I dunno, resistances boosted. Who knows.
Station assaults in null should also have DUST componants, as I doubt the 'defenders' just up and leave without quite a bit of close quarters fighting.
I'm sure timing and such for these modules or gameplay elements could be figured out, but I think the idea is fun as all hell.
