I'd like the Voices of Experience to share with me their opinions of the following setup for a laptop for school and Eveing. Well, I know it will work for school, but Eve?
HP Pavilion Athlon 64 3200+ 512 MB RAM Radeon XPress 200 M series 128 MB graphics card
I know that with the Radeon card I'll probably want the Omega drivers. How does it handle Eve? The whole thing is costing me about US$1000. I'm kind of skeptical about having a 3200+ processor with only 512MB of RAM, but the models I saw with 1 GB or more of RAM had processors of around 1.7 GHz.
So, let the opinions fly!

I currently play on a laptop that's very similar to yours, although I don't remember if I got a 64 or 128 video card. I run it over dialup and have had no problems beyond the ones that are a permanent part of the computer, that being a tendency to stall for a couple of seconds periodically :P I still have to get around to solving that problem, but it has nothing to do with EVE, and often occurs when I'm doing word processing :P
In short, it should work ----------------------------------------------- My name is "Todd". Drop the "T" and it explains sooooooo much! |

Well, if the 1.7 laptops were intel Pentium M's, then their gonna be just as fast as that 3200+
my laptop runs 2 windowed clients, Win Media Player, and forum browsing without a hitch, and its dated by the new P-M's. P-M 1.8 Dothan (400mhz system bus vs. Newer 533mhz) 1 gb ram ATI 9700M with modded official drivers Mobility modder

Well thanks for responding. My current desktop is ancient, and doesn't allow for pvp because, well, the whole client freezes up until the last person being targeted stops being targeted one way or another (I've concluded it is webbing/scrambling/nossying effects that do this). So I'm looking for something that will allow me to actually participate meaningfully in this side of Eve. I'm hoping that something new and not cobbled together will work better than what I have now (having a Radeon 7500 doesn't help at all I know). I guess I just want to make sure that I can compete hardware wise with the big boys, after the crappiness of my current system, which predates beta testing in Eve.

You might also check out Dell's "Dell Outlet" where they sell refurbished notebooks. They come with warranties and everything. $1300 for last year's powerhouse is, in this case, better than $1000 for today's cheapie. The Inspiron 9100 was basically the same as their "XPS" super-expensive laptop designed and marketed to compete with Alienware. Since the 9100/XPS "gen 1" they have made their XPS line different from their Inspiron line.
If you're seriously looking to game, you'll want a Radeon 9700 mobility or better. I don't think that Radeon XPress 200 M series video is anything you'd want to be gaming with.
I have an Inspiron 9100 and it is most excellent, it's a power-hungry beast because it's a P4 3GHz instead of a Pentium-M, but it doesn't bother me. For when I'm out "in the field" working I just have two batteries with me. To give you an idea, I play Eve in full-screen in PVP battles in 1920x1200 smooth as silk. That is a gigantor resolution for any system. I have also had great performance with Counter-Strike (not source) in 1920x1200 and FFXI in 1920x1200.

Oh, and for the record, I only recommend Dell for notebooks. When it comes to a desktop, I always say build your own. For $600 - $800 (USD) in parts you can have something that will feel "very fast" for at least the next 2 years.

I have a ACER FERRARI 3400 with a AMD 64 Athalon and a 128mb ATI card. Will that run EVE ok?

I have very similar specs on my laptop. Athlon 64 3200+ (gotta have that plus sign there :)) 512MB of 333mhz ram Radeon 9600 64mb blah
It runs eve as smooth as my desktop (which has a radeon x800pro 256mb) and can handle 2 eve clients simultaneous with minimal slowdown.

As a rule of thumb, any laptop with a DirectX 9 capable gfx chip/512MB Ram/1.5Ghz+ will run Eve without problem.
Radeon 9600/9700/9800/X600/X700/X800
Nvidia Geforce FX/6800 Go etc
You get the idea :)

Quote: Radeon XPress 200 M series 128 MB graphics card
Avoid this, it means the laptop uses a shared graphics system instead of a dedicated graphics chip. That can cripple even an otherwise well-specified laptop for gaming use.
The laptop's graphics chip is the single most important thing for games. CPU power isn't all that critical (any modern AMD or Intel chip has enough grunt to do the job) and memory can always be expanded at a later date.
I'd recommend you look for something with a Radeon 9600, 9700 or X600 chip, or an NVidia GeForce 5600, 6200, 6600 or better. Those will all handle Eve just fine.

Overkill, it runs fine on a 1.7 Ghz machine with 512 ram and a 32Mb Integrated Intel Video "card."

Watch out for the ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 video cards, EvE hates them :P with a passion :P The omega drivers solve most of your problems but it takes a little bit of messing around to make eve display properly. Otherwise, i run it on my Presario, 512 ram centrino processor, and find it runs faster than on my desktop under most conditions (laptops seem to have a much better control of their network resources and therefore less lag) Murph Dog CEO FORGE --Recruiting... evemail in game-- |

I could do that too... except for the fact that I don't have a pool. And by Jove, with the way a few weeks of this summer have been, I wish that I did...

My lpatop is ...
1.8ghz 512ram but a "ATI radeon IGP 320m" gfx.
I have a spare "PCI mini" slot, any way of getting a gfx that would go in there, or anything that is useful to go in my PCI mini slot?
Alot, if anyone knows how i can get a upgraded/new/modded (to work with games) "radeon igp 320m" gfx driver i would LOVE to know!

Mini-PCI slots are almost useless. About the only things available for them are modems and wireless network cards, and many laptops have a 'BIOS lock' that prevents anything but a few manufacturer-authorised cards from working (some legal thing to do with wireless cards, apparently).
I'm afraid you're stuck with the integrated graphics system.

Ibm Thinkpad T41
P-M 1.6 Ghz 1 gig ram radeon mobility 7500 32mb
The laptop LCD screen tops out at 1024x768, but that seems to top out the 7500 at just the right point.
I also play on a P-3 550mhz, 512mb, radeon 8500. play at 1680x1050. Im cpu limited here, so 1024 is the same speed, as opposed to my laptop, where the game gets faster if i drop to 800x600, which is unusable of course.
Eve doesnt take much to play, unless you are doing fleet fight lagfests. And you shouldnt need directx9, EVE predates that easily, and has no directx9 effects, and in fact looks the same on my directx7 laptop and my directx8 desktop. Framerates arent great, but this isnt counterstrike. If you want to know if it will run, download and fire her up with a trial account. you'll be surprised what you can get away with.

Edited by: Gian Callais on 19/08/2005 13:16:43 I run a Dell XPS Gen2. 2.1GHz Centrino, 2GB DDR2-533 memory and a 256MB nVidia 6800 Pro Ultra. It really works like a dream and I happily run EVE at 1920 x 1280 resolution and all detail maxed out without the slightest hint of frame rate issues.
It is a rather expensive setup and I would not recommend it for anyone that has even the slightest eyesight issues as the high res makes everything tiny. I find it great but a lot of people say they can't read my screen. Also it is a rather big notebook (being a 17" WS) so if you are looking for portability then it is not the one for you.

well here in a couple days this will be arriving . . I should not have any problems EvE with it, should I ? Also it is my first laptop, so this should be interesting (for me) was going to get a Alienware, but they are morons (sales that is), so it was a toss up between Dell and Hypersonic . . I e-mailed both to see how long it would take (configure/build and then ship), and dell would have taken too long, and hypersonic pretty much had a premade set up, damn near identical to what I would have configured, and would hav it shipped in a week, perfect because I only had a week N half at the shipping address I gave them , all I added was the extra memory, and Automobile adapter. I was not impressed with Alienwares sales, after that lil experience with them . . even if Alienware was the best AND the cheapest . . I will never purchase from them.
