I like the look of the HUD, but the lack of information is annoying. You dont know what hit you or how much damage it did, what modules are affecting you, etc (the message box disappears way to fast for that). Most annoying is when you fight some pirate, decide that you better warp out and suddenly discover that you are warp scrambled. So instead of running out of the scramble range, as you would have done if you knew when the scramble started, your ship goes poof and its time to pilot the pod.
Its also hard to see the damage you do with your guns, you usually only see the damage for the gun in the first slot.
Below is a suggestion on how the HUD could look, with a little more information:
In this pic, you see the modules affecting you to the left, the damage done to you (last 3 hits) in a scrolling list above the shield/armor/hull, and an indicator above each of your weapons on how much damage they did the last time they where fired.
Ofcourse, if CCP implements this, it will look better than in the picture I made. Maybe the modules affecting you should have a nifty little icon, and the damage you do should fade away.
Opinions?

We need a section of icons like in Earth and Beyond that represent buffs/debuffs on your ship, such as scrambling, jamming, etc. -- Proud member of the [23].

I think...
Webbed Make your velocity bar yellow.
Scrambled Make the velocity bar red.
Range modifiers Probably need to show up on the tactical overview, not necessarily on the HUD.
Other I am thinking something like a second icon in the display. As targets currently have - + * i depending on their status. Add a second tactical icon to indicate their current lock/shoot/ECM/scramble/web/etc status.

Yes, I totally agree, and share your qualms with the UI. The lack of information is really annoying, and so is the way that the damage is flashed on screen in a small box VERY quickly, and often before you can finish reading it, it's dissappeared.
So, I'll be signing this one. We as pvpers and npcers need more information during battles, because information is key. Without it you wouldn't have a clue about what your next move should be.

I love the idea, only 1 problem, a problem that is already there...lag, this will create more lag, as will every major change they make, data like that is more calculations that need to sent from the attacking person to the server then from the server to the person being attacked, biggest problem with this game is it's supposed to be dial up friendly. ----------------------------------------------- "Acta non Verba"

This has been requested before, and IMO is very much needed. Magnus' design looks very functional; I like it. Beats me why CCP didn't implement something like this in Shiva - people have been asking for these features since beta...
(BTW, I doubt it'll be long before mods turn Magnus' in-line image into a hyperlink. It's in the forum rules.)

Actually no, since all (or atleast most of) this information is already sent to the client. The exception might be the strength of the modules affecting you, and the type of ammo. But if that is a problem, just remove those details from the suggested HUD.
Personally I cant think of a single reason why CCP wouldn't implement something like this. All advantages, no drawbacks. They could even make it an option, so that people who for some reason like the old HUD could use that instead.

/me bounces over from another thread
oooo, nice ideas
I do agree that lag is always an issue, but all the information must already be sent to the client. the damage info is displayed in the fast scrolling message area, so that can be processed by the client into a different ui area. the webbing, scrambling and jamming info is also given to the client, how else do you know ure max speed, max range and if ure alowed to warp out or not? (hmm, maybe warping out is info requested when u try to warp, but the others will be fresh info readily available).
all in all its a great way of feeding us extra info in an easy to digest manner. however this has to be an optional setting, many users like the clean hud with minimal clutter. no point winding them up when we can all be happy . but thats what the hud drop down buttons is for, show spare slots, show passive slots, show combat info. simple as that, well simple enough to say, but with programing the easier it is to say the bigger the headache its gonna give the dev who does it
/me ables away wondering he's guessed right on the data the client knows Because sometimes you just have to go back to your roots: [2005.02.20 01:08:03] (combat) Your Civilian Light Electron Blaster perfectly strikes Serpentis Smuggler, wrecking for 20.3 damage. |

Well, in a game like EVE, you would think that at the very least, you would clearly see the damage you do to the enemy as well as the damage the enemy does to you. I really hope CCP fix these issues in some way, even if the solution looks different from this suggestion.

Does the devs ever respond to idea threads? Because it seems to me everyone wants a better HUD (for example like the one I made in this thread), and has wanted a better HUD for a long time. And yet we still have a simple HUD. It would be interestig to hear why we have such a simple HUD, and the reasons not to make it better.

the Ammo bit aint really needed at all.
Like the Idea about the Scrambled Strength, But to keep it simple It needs to be on the velocity Bar.
An indication for being Scrambled Is much needed
We dont need to know how webbed we are, because its blatantly obvious, the Velocity Drops Radically.

Nice, and would the devs be kind enough to add some status indicators too ?

yep i so like this idea, would very like to have it put into the game. It will make life so much better... i mean if in the future when we fly in space ships where we have people who can scramble you it would really make sence to have a warning light

Edited by: Jaabaa Prime on 25/08/2005 19:04:56 I forgot one, in your mind's eye add a red circle with a missile in it to indicate an incoming missile.
I should have also said, the icons are not visible all the time, only when they are relevant, maybe even flashing/pulsing but I'm not sure if that would be too much eye candy. -- Intergalactic Teeth Pullers "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." Xelas doesn't know what he's talking about, the info is already client side and the icon display would be controlled & triggered client-side. No bandwidth or server lag beyond what we already have (which is bad enough).
great idea btw. Definitely of good use. Dunno if it has to be right around the current HUD at the bottom, as opposed to the EnB top-right corner position, but it should be in somewhere prominent & noticeable. -------------------------------------------- Soban... red all the way through and through |

I never played EnB so I have no idea what it looked like, the reason I put them there is because that area is never covered up when in combat. Personally I have gang/corp chat lower left (even covers the "zoom buttons") and local to the right of the weapons, and the upper right is obviously the overview, so it seemed like a good place to put them. -- Intergalactic Teeth Pullers "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." I've got an even better idea, get ccp to make it possible for people to design there own displays. Eve is filled with 100's of designers and programmers. (not me btw) If they could make them we would have the perfect look to eve. kinda like the way there are 1000's of mods foe counter strike some bad but alot make it a hell of a lot better

Ok, this all sounds nice, but the one thing they need to do is change the stupid Triangles to much larger buttons. Bring back the almighty Stop sign and maybe a Green light fo full speed. otherwise its signed
