Success in the Angel Epic Arc boils down to a simple question: Can you do a dozen or so L2s spread out over around 10 systems in NPC 0.0 space? "No sweat!" you say? Then this is an easy way to make a few extra hundred million ISK. After reading the advice from CCP to use an interceptor I decided to try it in one of the new and improved T1 frigates, the Tristan. I'm sharing my impressions in an attempt to encourage other "eggers" to step up to some of the toughest PVE content in Eve, from a purely logistical standpoint.
I went with the Tristan because I couldn't imagine any L2 scenario in which a ceptor would succeed but a Tristan would not. It's not as agile as an interceptor, but with a nano, maybe "fast enough" for most situations? As it turns out, at least from a risk/reward and ISK efficiency standpoint, it worked out for me.
Full disclosure, I did use a throwaway-fit T1 frigate scout on a second account alt-tab dual boxing the accounts. Maybe not the ballsiest way to do it, scouting for a frig, but I lost a cov ops cloaky to a top 100 PVPer on Eve and his interdictor when trying to sneak in and set up some preliminary bookmarks. If I had it to do over again, I would have done that bit with the throw-away alt+fit instead. The mission area is far from any viable trade hub, so it's not easy to find a decent system to base out of without moving in your own supply of replacement ships. I was basing out of Rens which was over a dozen jumps away, so I really wanted to avoid getting podded...again.
In the end, was the scout necessary? Not really. I never lost the scout. I believe it would be perfectly viable to move 3 or 4 frigates into the nearest high sec station and move your medical clone to the same place. A travel fit with nanos would probably give you the best chance of "self scouting". Beating gate camps is where the interceptor shines, but an interceptor might not save you from dual-webbed interdictor flown by a highly competent pilot...and his buddies. For the price of a single lost interdictor, you can replace the T1 frigate 4-5 times. If you get caught so many times that this does not apply, you must be doing it wrong.
Patience and caution work well together. When local spikes to 91 and Sisters Combat Probes appear on scan, maybe you should try again in a few hours.
This is approximately the fit I used, with some tweaks based on lessons learned. At no time did I have a problem handling the NPCs. Get aggro, MWD to a range of around 50km as you release your hobbies. I had to bring back one of my Hobgoblin IIs on several occasions when it got aggro. The other 4 were enough to finish off the room. The injured one didn't have time to regen shield before the room was cleared. My drone skills are mostly fours, except where required for Hob IIs, Gallente Frigate V.

Drone Navigation Computer I Drone Navigation Computer I Limited 1MN Microwarpdrive I

I brought a Drone Damage Amplifier II with me but never used it. You can lose .4 seconds of align time and the offline the salvager to get one to work. This would likely go a long way to compensating for less than stellar drone/gallente frig skills, but the real danger of this epic arc is from the locals not the NPCs. Speaking of which, the pipe from Rens to the mission area is camped by a very competent interdictor pilot who likes to haunt the systems between Hemin and Doril. He has 3 buddies including a Falcon and a Nado. Good luck overcoming your "petty fears and trivial concerns". Challenge accepted?

Very nice write-up.
At the end of the read I realized I'm not sure if you had completed it or not. No mention of fat loot, standing gained, etc.

Hmmm...good point. I did manage to complete it over the course of about a week, playing casually and cautiously. Some days I made no progress at all, in that I would log on, find the conditions not advantageous, and never got back to check again. Total time spent on it was only about 3-4 hours. Once the bookmarks were in place, moving around became much easier. The only ship lost was the cov ops I was doing initial snooping with. The rewards gained were as described in the guides, "The rewards include a Domination Target Painter (100-125Ml,) a Cynabal Blueprint Copy (~240M,) a Concord tag from the last encounter (9-10M,) and about 43M in agent rewards. You also get a huge standing increase to the Angel Cartel. I went from -9.39 to -2.76. You will also lose about .25 standing with the Minmatar Republic." No changes that I noticed. Guides I found helpful were:

Thank you, I appreciate the kind words. I did see the guides for sale but decided to go it on my own. If I was in a rush to get it done the BMs would have saved me a tremendous amount of time, I will say that. This is one of the few times I've slowed down in Eve long enough to really explore the content, and I would like to reiterate that it was fantastic content compared to the "regular" missions. The writing was edgier and less generic, and the scenery was really well done.
For anyone thinking about doing these, please note that you can easily gain access to the pirate agents for the arc through high sec empire agents. This was a misconception that kept me from trying them for a long time. "Who the heck has standing with ANGELS?!" As it turns out, you don't need it. One interesting little hiccup, when I arrived at the first angel mission agent in 0.0 after being told to go there by the empire agent, they were designated UNAVAILABLE. After about 10 seconds of panic, I tried talking to the agent anyway, and was assigned the first mission.

Nice write-up. It was a relief for me when I realized that I don't have to grind standings to 4.5 or something that was mentioned in one of the guides and apparently faction or corp standings of 3.0 is enough. Would like to try it as all these recent discussions about how to get people from empire to null made me think, "isn't this is exactly how?".
I wonder if we are going to see arcs for other pirate factions in the future.
Oh, and thanks for linking that guide, wouldn't hurt |

when this epic arc 1st came out... I spent 18 hours doing it for the 1st time. most of that was making warp in on the gates. then 3 months went by and I found my self making new bm's for different gates.. this repeated for another 9 months.
in the end I stopped doing the epic arc as they home system was camped to hell and back.
its a great epic arc to do if you can complete it. Now giving away isk to likes on forums posts to random likers..* Masuka Taredi 100m isk* could this be you? |

Thanks for the nice read :-)
As it sounds like you were doing the arc for the first time I'd like to share some experiences of my own. I found that the best way for me to do this and the Guristas epic arc was to get a supply of a few ships (AF, Destroyers, Interceptors, Frigs... whatever you feel like using) to the first 0.0 staging system of the arc (K-QWHE for Angels and H-PA29 for Guristas) with a hauler or cloaky hauler. I do this either directly before or after downtime to avoid most campers. Then I move into a jumpclone without implants and take a covops frig to pick up the first mission and then move to the 0.0 where I moved the ships earlier and start running the missions. This sounds a bit tedious at first but once you have everything set up it will make your life so much easier especially when you lose a ship and know you have the next one ready. Once the arc is completed you can also use the covops to get that nice BPC back to highsec. |
