CSM was informed of this change a few days ago in a meeting with Jon Lander and Hilmar. We will of course be closely following the transition in order to help ensure that EVE continues to develop along the path Jon laid out, which has been greatly responsible for a string of successful and increasingly ambitious expansions.

Thank you Mr. Lander for a job well done.
Executive producer -> mobile strategy something does not exactly sound like a promotion. That he remains with CCP however suggests that he hasn't fallen out with the CEO or is disgruntled with CCP. Pretty confusing.
Very unconventional though for the CEO to announce it at this point and to invite people from the community to apply. Big ups for that! Always cool to see CCP do things no other big company would do. I hope the new EP does as good as a job as Jon did - he has some big shoes to fill. I'm actually a bit sad to see him leave this role but I'm sure he'll do great things with the mobile division.
While getting outside talent may be a good thing, I do hope it is someone with a thorough knowledge of Eve Online. Jon had first hand Eve Online knowledge from being a player, and I believe knowing the game and it's community are must have skills for an executive producer.

I'm not worried. A key part of the last year and a bit has been making sure that EVE doesn't rely on a single person. Now we have a great team leading up development in CCP Seagul and CCP Ripley along with all the other devs who have been around for ages (and some rather spiffy new devs ). I have every faith in these people to carry on doing amazing things and I know we will only put in a great person into the EP role.

Will post it here as the thread is already growing...
PPS: well, after regaining my cold blood (?) i'm ready to elaborate...
First, mobile strategy? Sorry CCP, but you're late for that. Once you get up to speed with that mobile target, insert-your-fav-tech will be killing the PC again.
Second, who in heavens tells so broadly that their core product is headless and looking for a hired brain?
Third, what kind of production strategy can be fully implemented in a few longer than 18 months? Answer: none. Which tells a lot on why we've been getting the best non-expansive expansions in the history of EVE.
I'm distressed, frankly. I already feared that CCP was behind the power curve, and now they're talking about offlining a cylinder and replace it inflight...
Admittedly, I would laugh my ass off if the new EP was some Gianturco dude, though. The Greater Fool Bar-áis now open for business, 24/7. Come and have drinks and fun somewhere between RL and New Eden!-áIngame chat channel: The Greater Fool Bar |

Well, I am a passionate guy by nature, and I have a nasty habit of being right when I fear that a story being told before my eyes it's gonna end bad.
Changing the EP is yet another delay in a development schedule that already was delayed. You needed someone to rethink nullsec sov last year, not next year. And "next year" suddenly has become an optimistic time schedule for the new EP to get up to speed and lead the work in remaking the only endgame you got. Be honest - after 10 years of having to deal with a rediculously complex game with thousands of ranting lunitics on the forums, you want to do something a little more relaxed for a while.
And you deserve it. Thanks for doing a great job for us over the years. The new EP has some serious shoes to fill.

Credit where credit is due, a lot of people have worked really hard on EVE for much longer than me. That Hilmar guy for one It has been a huge privilege for me to do the EP role and I am glad I have been able to help move EVE forwards in good ways for all of us (remember, I love playing this game too )
And I don't think there is any chance my future will be more relaxed. Lots to do and deliver on and all of it by yesterday Still, laser focus for me on EVE until the second decade even though the development team doesn't really need much from me anymore. I'm looking forward for mobile content. Theres no reason you shouldn't be able to do corp management on your tablet or deal with production jobs on your smartphone while at your way to work. At least thats features I have in mind when talking about mobile. I'm also curious to see what part the EVE API and 3rd party developers will have here or if mobile means just proprietary clients exclusively controlled by CCP.
Heres an interesting read on how Camelot Unchained, a MMO recently starting its funding phase on kickstarter, is planing to create ways for 3rd party developers to create UI components using web technologies. As a small company they don't have the resources to put very much effort into the UI so they plan to create tools so players can create their own interface fitting their needs. This is something I'd like to see for EVE as well, be it ingame or for mobile platforms. Hope you guys can push some new radical ideas and make new interesting things happen! |

The past year of EVE has been, I think, the best year for the game by far. But I have serious doubts about the ability of an outside candidate being able to do any good for EVE, unless that outside candidate has massive experience in the game. For one, there is a a huge learning curve in EVE not just for players but for devs, and that's why hires like CCP Fozzie have worked out so well--because he brought many years of experience in the game already. It seems like what EVE lacks is not plans or ideas or goals...What it lacks are more programming geniuses to put all those goals into reality.
Who would make a good EP for EVE? Actually, the people I voted for for CSM8. |

I'm a bit worried about this situation honestly ; I don't give much importance to a mobile section, and am surprised you're recruiting someone who was not part of the family for a position this high.
Given Unifex did a god job he deserves to go where he want to, but on the other hand I would have preferred him to stay here, given he know well how to do his job.
Well, if the new guy doesn't please us we can always blob him, fire all doomsdays on him, and hope for Unifex to take back the fleet's command :P |

That said, how can anyone from the outside possibly fill those shoes? Especially if that person has either a) no MMO experience at all; or, worse, b) starts the interview with "yeah I've been playing MMOs for years; I'm a Level 9001 Paladin."

Thanks Jon for everything you did as EP.
You fixed what was horribly broken. You and your teams built the foundation on which to create for years to come.
Still, I'm very worried about the search for a new EP: why from outside? If something good came from you - and it did! - it's also because you play and love this game.
We don't need a top manager that yesterday was the VP of WalMart.
We need a great manager who loves and "gets" this game.

CCP Unifex pretty much saved EvE imho, so ofc I appreciate that. Doesn't look like he's going anywhere though... rather they are sending him on a new mission to broaden the platforms CCP runs on. Definately a good thing for us and the company. It's also interesting they are looking outside of CCP for a new executive producer. I've read on rate-your-employer type sites CCP can be a bit of an Icelandic boys club. If they are striking out for some new blood, it probably means they are gearing up for some bold changes and additions to the game, and that there have already been some bold changes within CCP as a RL corp. I like bold. EvE is overdue for bold. Looking forward to the next 10 years anyway...

I got a better idea lets make the filling of the Executive Producer position just like CSM8, first we'll have a pre-election process with 200 likes err 'endorsements' and then we'll have a STV vote of the top 14 candidates & Hilmar can choose amongst them Ripard Teg-á for CSM 8 slot 1, Mike Azariah slot 2 Disclaimer: CCP Bias is a fictional character. First, let me thank you for the fantastic job you have done for Eve Online. Bad move.
Jon Lander did an amazing job in this position, while it's good that he's moving to the mobile strategy - it's a bad move imo. This game (for the first time in years) was on the right track under his supervision. |

I think is a wise move. Many leaders have a set of vision, creativity, and perspective when they lead a group. They are able to view things differently than the next.
From what I saw Unifex was a Logical person who saw , quality, solidify code efficiency (code Re write), framework. Which eve really needed at the time.
The next person will come to the position with different history, and will see other opportunities. and be able to apply their strengths, to build a synergy on what Unifex's leadership built. BUT.... Hilmar and CCP Eve Crew must make sure this new leadership, if changing any of the previous work of Unifex is done to improve the game,
I hope the person is a person that is able to see able to see eve's successful niche's (eves unique balance of risk/vs reward balance) and explore those forcefully, while placing secondary effort of the areas where their competitor have, (WOT non- LOS artillery tanks), But not a person who is going to think that Uber graphics, and being leading edge is the way to go. Who thinks that being the BEST is the only way.
In marketing it is important to stand out from the crowd, and being the best takes the least brain power but takes the most effort, time and money. Though focusing on the asset of of brain power and being different, every dollar and every hour spent will be worth 10 fold.
Incarna was the idea of being the best in avatar technology, and begin to conform to the mainstream mediocrity ideals that all games will need to Micro Transactions.
Inferno to odyssey was back to the roots that made eve different, and cleaning up the mess of being the best, or simply "lock out" an option till cheep technology could catch up and resources become available. Going back to the sand box and cutting resources from most theme park content built by devs, (though live events seems like an anomaly to me, but that may have secondary benefits to stir up universe and to have some player evangelically promote that they were there)
From X to Y I hope it is continuing to build on the unique ideas: -Players cause the universe to change, NPC political landscape will change for the long term if a sustained effort is made, Yes make it possible that in a 5 years time the Caldari can wipe out the Gellente, only to have another new sect of Caldari to form to fight the old. -The universe is to always to explored - resources change everywhere but at varying speeds - except regular asteroid belts. -->Player some structures that are easier to abandon/ destroy than to recycle. so new players can discover the remnants of old Alliances assets.
Sadly I only have an extremely limited insight to the inner workings of eve. And what I say is a guess and often may counter what I have said in the past, as new information has come to light.
I look forward to see the new ideals and stuff coming from fan fest. I hope his Unifexes delve into moble CCP applications work, as I know I phones and Tables are flooding the market. In fact I have both even after saying I would never use one.... bah I am now programming a data base program for the table.
I just hope that CCP holds onto Uniflex long term, knowing he is on staff some where, makes me happy so that if things start going south, some one proven can come in and clean up the mess in a logical way.
Some day I will have the internet and be able to play again. |

CCP Unifex wrote:I'm not worried. Point taken, an excellent team has been built, and you have done a magnificent job. I felt more relaxed about the future of this game than I can remember after the first time I understood what your view point and goals were.
I'll be frank, it's going to be hard to find someone for your position that will inspire the same amount of confidence (absolutely no disrespect intended for the other members of your team). CCP's choice of replacement is going to be critical... I don't envy the person that will step in as they will have pretty big shoes to fill. Not to mention the fact that most of us genuinely like you, and more importantly agreed with your priorities and methodology.
As for who cares about a promotion... well, where you're concerned I think we all do. But if working on EvE's mobile efforts is what you want, I wish you the very best of luck. It is good to know for certain that at least that aspect of the game will be in very competent hands. I just hope you will retain some influence in the selection of your replacement.
Good luck in your new position Jon! To carve a successful niche for yourself in EVE you need to be able to out sell, out produce, out fight,-á out run, or out wit your competitors. If you can do none of the above, your only option is to complain on the forums that somehow you are at a disadvantage using the exact same tool set-áas the rest of the player base. |

Thanks Jon,
Your tenure has really covered the period in which I really started to get into EVE in a big way. I've really enjoyed all the content that's been comming out. I've enjoyed the new graphics - the new stealth bombers, the stabber and tempest hulls. I've loved the new nebulae, the new UI is awesome. I've even gotten used to and like the new inventory UI. The changes have been many and really well appreciated. I've seen the TiDi in action. I've seen the new missile effects and then new missile turrets. And I've enjoyed it all.
Two step wrote:Gilbaron wrote:Farmville, PI edition what could possibly go wrong ? Are you implying that there could be a worse "game" than what PI already is? LOL - Dude - some of us like PI. Really. I like WiS too for that matter and bought clothes.
I've also seen the changed PI - and I like that too. I've seen and been involved with fights over POCOs.
The game has come on soo much recently. It's like after Incarna, (which I actually agreed with the big man was awesome and gave EVE online the best character/avatar construction around), the FiS really moved up a gear. So much so I'm even getting weary of balance!!!
The game now is in such a strong and stable shape. Touch-wood - stability is a thing of the past - or seems to be. I've never had the client crash - not like 2007 when I first played!
I think your successor will have a fantastic opportunity to start work from a great place. You couldn't have helped engineer a better platform for someone to take over from. Look at other software that is kicking around at the moment. . . . EVE is a technological masterpeice IMO. Jita with 2K+ people online. . . Even a chat window with that many people on it is impressive.
The best thing about EVE though. IMO. Is the culture of the environment. Stable. BIG nerfs or Buffs are in the order of single percentage tweaks i think that is testement to its greatness and EVE's values, (maybe CCP's Values), subtley, consideration, precision, restraint. To be honest it builds trust.
I was bitching over the TE changes - but that was foolish - and Fozzie was able to answer.
I think you've done really well. Cheers for everything and I hope you enjoyed your time in your old roll!
Cheers

Maybe you could take this opportunity to draft in a few folks with a 'can do' attitude instead of the 'its too difficult' crowd.
You look to be ground breaking yet you fail to repair the broken ground behind you. You'll end up with a carrot and stick scenario in order to entice customers rather than strengthening the existing game infrastructure / mechanics. Of course we still want new stuff but the novelty lasts but a short while until the everyday broken stuff takes focus once again.
Nevertheless, I'll continue to play regardless of the game's state.

Sounds like an amazing opportunity - I still think as far as MMOs go, EVE is closest to the ideal of what a MMO should be. I just hope hiring outside of CCP doesn't mean hiring outside of the community, because I honestly don't think someone who hasn't experienced the game for themselves can be in charge of its vision. There is a part where you need to have vision of what the game would look like 5 or 10 years out, but then there is a part where you need to know how it directly translates into mechanics and how they build on top of one another and interconnect. That's not even getting into the economic and balance repercussions of any change. |
