It would be nice if someone could make something like the chart on http://www.merzo.net but with EVE frigates, battleships, stations, dreadnaughts, stargates...
I don't know if there are official lenghts of the ships, but I remember reading something about an Apocalypse being one mile long so this could be the benchmark to scale the other ships

In the database all ships have a radius value (not the same as signature radius). For the apoc this is 400m, Arma 250m, Claw 32.89m etc.
Not sure what this value represents. Maybe used for collision detection, if that is the case it should be close to half ship lenght.

It might be possible to do comparitive scaling by taking screenshots of ships next to eachother? fairly longwinded, but then again, you'd need pics of every ship anyway...?

it won't work cos the ships' scale is fubared... They don't represent the actual sizes between each class - sad but true.

Wow! Thanks for pointing me at that site. I had a BM for his old site, and thought it had gone forever. Now it turns out he's just moved it somewhere else!
One of the things that is easily lost in Eve is any sense of scale or proportion. A Rifter is almost as big as a Boeing 747 for example. The eve camera tends to make all the ships seem almost the same size when you're in them, and you don't get that kind of 'Star Wars IV, Star Destroyer filling the screen' wow moment when you jump into your first Apocalypse. OK, the Apoc isn't as big as a Star Destroyer, but it is in the region of 1km long and has a crew of about 6000, so it's like flying around in something that's twice the size of any skyscraper currently found on Earth.

Actually, this is something I think I can do.
If you name some ships I'll try and put an example together. ______________________________________________

Malachite of EVE-Gate was working on a similar chart, but the EVE-Gate site has been a while between updates. I'm attempting to contact the EVE-Gate staff to find out the status of their page and the comparison chart.

I've always thought Battleships didn't seem big enough personally.

I thought I'd illustrate my 'Rifter is almost as big as a 747' example from earlier:
Rifter vs 747 vs People
10 pixels per metre. Rifter dimensions from the diagrams from the old Eve database. Borrowed Jeff Russell's people and 747 drawings to make the comparison.

There actually used to be one floating around. I think it had a Tempest, the Eifel Tower, and a few other common ships. Though I haven't seen the link in a couple of years.

on the topic of size, "ships dont fit into stations" = make stations WAY larger. now make larger ships. *drools at thaught about a REAL size scorpion and raven that reflects their mass* \up yours amarrians, WE have the biggest ships/ --------------------------

I've measured the Megathron with my pod, at 15 m/s speed. The ship turned out to be about 850-900 meters long. Pretty big, but not really that impressive, compared to the bigger ships on that comparison chart. I'm guessing cruisers are somewhere from 150 to 250, and frigs range from 30 to 50 meters. ---------------

Edited by: Zac Paris on 23/09/2005 17:01:10 This is something I'd love to do, but I just don't have the time.
A tip for those who are working on it: make sure your side views are zoomed out, and then zoomed back in using the zoom feature, so the ships look nice and flat.
Something like this.

Well considering the Tempest is scaled at being 2.4km long (2400m) on the old eve blueprints, then that's pretty beleiveable tbh.

Looks like 1090 to me.
Also I think the height and breadth may be reversed.

If you read the numbers on the blueprint its 1090 x 600 x 200.
The antena sticking out of the front makes it look 1200 but doesn't count into the actual ship length as listed. Also the sail panel on the top is clearly not being counted either. So the figures given are the solid body of the ship.
