Hello
I'm one of the many people who just joined doing the 14 day trial. I'm checking out eve for the most part in my little frigate. I really want to trade up to a cruiser though. I'm not however making much money. I've been wondering if it will be cheaper for me to make a cruiser rather then buy one?
Is it feasible that I buy a cruiser blueprint copy, rent a slot, and supply it from minerals I get from refining pirate loot?
If so any suggestions on how to go about it?

you would have to mine a lot, and refine a lot. your mining and refining eficiencies would be so low that you would not be able to compete with a corp producing the ships. i would say it would be faster to mine and sell the raw ore, or sell the raw loot, you will probobly get the mony together faster than you would get the minerals together.
that and most ships would require minerals that you could not mine yourself with your current skills and equipment.
have you considered joining a player run corperation, a lot of corps will supply you with your cruiser and gear if you work for them.
give me an eve-mail in game if your interested in getting into some mining and rat hunting, i may be able to get you a position.

Hi Agana
I managed to get together the minerals for a cruiser during my first two weeks, but I also got lucky and joined Coreli corp within those two weeks, who have a good Logistics division and took my minerals and built the cruiser for me. I'm just touching 6 weeks playing now, and my skills are about there to build my own at a modest profit should I want to.
My advice, as per the previous post, would be to join a corp, and as you are Gallente, if you're interested in RP as well you should naturally join Coreli Corp

Heh thanks, never know when someone will find that blog
I've been thinking about joining a corp for a while but my time online is very odd (an hour or two here, 5 minutes there). Hence reporcessing pirate loot to get needed minerals. I thought about just selling the pirate loot but most of it seems to go for 10 to 20k max (with obviously some exceptions).
On the otherhand I can pickup a thorax BPC for 150,000 (and yes I'm checking to make sure its a thorax bpc and not a hunk of ore). Where as the a finished thorax runs 7.5 million in the region I'm in. So it seems to make more sense to try and reprocess the minerals myself. Unless of course we're talking about weeks worth of mineral gathering from pirate loot.
I don't really have much interest in mining so if I do it on my own its pirate loot or buying minerals myself. And the later seems like it might be more expensive..

well i realy havent tried recycling pirate loot for resources, so i dont know how efficient that is. I dont mind mining a bit though, with a well equipt cruiser i can make several million isk in an hour. an hour here, an hour there, as you say it, and your a multi millionair.
and about getting into a well equipt cruiser, join a corp, the one im in wont care that you dont play at stable times, they just care that you put in at least 4 hours of mining in a week, thats not much commitement.
take it from one best buy ranter to another, (i worked for best buy for years, i have several rants on them) come and mine an hour a day with me, and youll have everything youll ever need. your skills will be slowing you down, not your money.

So just as an update in case anyone else is thinking about trying this. After buying a 1 run BPC I've decided that trying to make my own cruiser is possible but extremely difficult.
This is mainly due to the extreme competitive nature of the market. There really isn't much profit being made on a Thorax sold for 7.1 million. The sheer number of minerals I would need to make my own means that I really could buy one a lot easier then trying to reprocess it through pirate loot. If I were a miner this would be a different story. But I really have no interest in mining.

It's nice to get a cruiser soon, but the Thorax isn't the best choice skillwise for a new player. It neads weapon skills, drone skills, armour skills to be effective. I suggest you get yourself into a good fighter frigate, find yourself a good kill agent and start earning money while you build up your tanking and drone skills for that Thorax.
There's no point in rushing to a cruiser you can't fly efficiently...
As for what frigate, I'd suggest the Tristan. Not too high skills to fly it, seems pretty easy to fit out, and it will give you enough punch for doing lvl 1 missions and efficiently slaughtering frigate rats.
There is but one God, one world, one Empire to serve Him. One people, in the Light, separated from the beasts below. |

Couldn't agree more about the Tristan being a nice fighter frigate. In fact the one featured in my sig is my current ship of the last 5 or so days.
I really would like to move up to a cruiser soon though. A very nice fellow gave me a heafty donation without asking the other day so that helps me out a lot.
The Tristan is a nice bird but I'm still very limited in what I can do with it. All that being said I'm at least a week away from getting a cruiser even if I had the ISK to do it right now. Need to train up a few more skills so I can use proper weapons with it etc.

Hi Agana IĘm also a new player (or rather I just started playing again from scratch.) Who decided it might be cheaper to build then buy. IĘd have to say its been going ok so far.
Big question though how come you are going straight for a cruiser and not a destroyer first? I havenĘt built a cruiser yet but I have built a couple of destroyers and sold one for a good profit over the ore. The first of which I got the materials from rats not mining (I still had to buy some of the Zydrine.) Zydrine turned out to be my biggest problem since I got very little of it from pirate loot. ThatĘs why I turned to Jaspet mining in sec 0.4.
I find it helpful to look at eveĘs item database:
http://www.eve-online.com/itemdatabase/ships/default.asp
It will tell you the relative mineral requirements to build the before you buy the BPC.
Unfortunately our Gallente destroyer requires twice as much Zydrine as the Caldari.
IĘd also definitely consider a smaller cruiser to start with. The Thorax is definitely a great ship but you can get into a Celestis for about half the price or minerals and start seeing those cruiser profits now. You can always repackage and sell your old ship later.
Just my .02 isk noob advice.

Hi Agana,
I know its not really information you were requesting.. but i thought id just let you know anyways ;) Eve is a great game.. im only playing 6 almost 7 months.. and its only now im getting skills trained that makes the game 100% more enjoyable.. eve takes a long time to get into.. especially for newbies.. your 14 days will be used up in a snap.. just training to use your thorax, or what ever other cruiser you plan on flying.. as a previous poster said.. it will really take you 3- 4 months to train all the support skills your going to need to fly your cruiser properly. I hope you stick with it.. EvE is practically the best MMOG on the market at the moment.. ive not played another single multiplayer game that has my adrenaline running so hard my hands are shaking on the mouse :)
EvE usually has me awake till 3am most nights planning the next 6 months worth of training i plan on doing..
Anyways, buy your cruiser if you want to fly one at the beginning.. it will take you months of training to get your industry skills up high enough to come close to producing the ships as cheap.

Originally by: Spud man Big question though how come you are going straight for a cruiser and not a destroyer first?
Mostly because for what I was hunting (.5 and higher) the destroyer was not going to give me a significantly larger advantage over my tristan. In that I could take out all the pirate fields with little danger (or at most a few warp outs).
The type of loot I was getting from those belts was making me money but it wasn't dropping a lot of minerals. Mega and Zydrine (like you pointed out) were pretty absent.
Now this all being said I should point out that I got a serious boost recently. Two very kind players gave me substantial donations without prompting and has enabled me to buy my cruiser
I ended up not going for a Thorax since I could buy it for the isk I had but to insure it and equip it out properly would cost me a fair bit more. I ended up buying Verox pretty cheap and then fully insured it and equipped it out pretty nice.
Now I just need to train up my various skills to let me use better then 150 rails with consistency.

First off, congrats on joining - as for getting your cruiser, if you want to get it with your own work, and you currently can fly a Tristan, I'd recommend finding some 1/10 deadspace complexes in Gallente space and running them. While the loot and bounties aren't great, the end of the mission sometimes (if your lucky) yields a 6th Tier Overseers Effects, which goes for about 360k - add bounties into that as well as selling the loot or reprocessing it, and you can get about half a million in a single run.
Repeat this process as needed, and after about 10 runs you should have both the money and skills for the Thorax, as running complexes is fast but finding one that's not being camped atm takes a lil luck and time. For a basic list of complexes, click the link below, and plug in each system to see if its close to you, then go run it. Best wishes in your adventures ;).
