Hello Universe,
A new pilot is in need of your advice.
I made a Caldari merc, I preferred their looks, aesthetically. But I am thinking about training Amarr Frigates as well as Minmatar Frigates for the time being. I've heard some good stuff about the Rifter for example. Is this viable? I know it will set me back in terms of time spent on training. Hopefully, in the future I can join up with a Mercenary Corporation. That's my goal, at least. Would you guys advise against training for CovertOps on the side?
Regarding training - do the certificates also give you enough insight as to which type of basic/general skills to train? For example: Ammar certificates with Armor tanking skills intertwined, etc.
Ultimately, I just want to have fun and take my time while doing so. This means running some normal missions as well. Are there certain restrictions for Missions or are they shared between starting systems? Is Chaven the starting Amarr system?
If there's anyone who wants to point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. |

sure! nothing to stop you from training any other race's things.
Keep in mind a lot of the guides that have been written more than 6-8 months ago are probably out of date for what's "good" these days -- CCP's just about finished with re-balancing the vanilla T1 ships, and have shaken up their roles.
Certificates are a good starting point, though you don't "have" to stick to them 100% ... with that said, the "Core Competency" certificates will be a VERY big help.
Starter systems are really just the systems you start in (they're defined somewhere) ... don't lock yourself into them, go explore!
Just keep in mind that you're offered no special protection as a rookie. One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia |

Being a calamari character in no meaningful way impacts your ship choice. I think, last I remember, that it affected less than one day of training. This is nothing when the normal characters are aged in months or years.
I'd recommend you look at the slasher prior to the Rifter. After the rebalance that is a mean little ship and the Rifter is no longer considered the king of the hill. Though it is still useable.
Upcoming the changes will have folk moaning about the fate of projectiles, but Minnie ships a always in demand. Merc outfit or not.
Running tutorials for races you want to fly is not necessary, but probably not a bad idea if you we're already set on it.

I know it will set me back in terms of time spent on training. This is perfectly fine. You will not incur any penalties for training ships and weapons outside of your chosen race.
Mirr Aurilen wrote:I've heard some good stuff about the Rifter for example. Is this viable? Most of the older guides gush about how the Rifter is above and beyond all other ships in its class. However, this does not hold true today as the entire frigate class has been rebalanced.
Right now, the Rifter is still a good ship... however all the other frigates are worth looking into as they are all more or less viable. Some like the Slasher... others prefer the Punisher... or maybe the Breecher or Tormentor? Look at each ship carefully, study its bonuses, and then Google "EVE Fitting Tool" so you can play around with ship layouts (it's free).
Mirr Aurilen wrote:Hopefully, in the future I can join up with a Mercenary Corporation. That's my goal, at least. Would you guys advise against training for CovertOps on the side? Specialize in whatever floats your boat. Just understand that each specialty has its strengths and weaknesses. Covert-ops, while excellent for cloaking up and watching people, is weak in direct combat and best used with other ships like it.
With regards to joining a Merc alliance... by all means, go for it. Don't wait... just do it. At your low level death is almost meaningless as your clone is free until you hit 900k SP and the ships you use are dirt cheap by veteran standards... and you can run as "hero tackle" (see: "suicide pinner") for veterans and they will often give you a pile of cheap frigates for free as long as you continue to do it. Meanwhile you watch and listen to them... learning what does what.
Btw... ignore any skill point requirements that are posted on people's recruitment ads. Talk to people directly and show that you are willing, able, and not an asshat.

For example: Ammar certificates with Armor tanking skills intertwined, etc. Somewhat. Think of them as guidelines on what to train for what. However they won't tell you what is exactly effective for which situation.
Start with the skills listed in the core certificates. Get them all up to at least level 4 and then go back and bump them up to 5 with a good mix of "fun" skills in there. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

Thanks for the quick and exhaustive replies everyone.
About the Frigate rebalance - normally MMOs also have a seperate thinktank community that discuss all the changes and theorycraft the heck out of the game. Is there a similar site for Eve Online? I guess Battleclinic might be one, but that seems focused on fittings.
Are there any Merc Corps that hire new bloods that you perhaps know of?
Thanks again everyone. |

Just keep a few things in mind:
- if you have an idea, use the search function first. And search using several variations on the subject you want to talk about (often, you'll get very different results). Nothing pisses off people who lurk in that subforum more than an idea that is a repeat of an older idea.
- that subforum is looked at by the Developers often, but they almost never post unless it is a topic they are trolling and/or have officially made. Developers prefer to let the community itself discuss and/or tear apart ideas because they are the ones who will use it and/or abuse it.
- be informed and well reasoned about the subject or idea you are talking about. Ideas that are founded on the basis of "because it'd be cool" or "why isn't this implemented" are not received very well by the community.
- have thick skin when posting an idea. Whens some of us pick apart an idea, it's not usually personal. We're just sticklers for systems and details (because the community at large has a nasty tendency to abuse and warp the rules and mechanics to suit our needs).
- Understand that balance is key. Saying "this would be a cool feature and if you dislike it you don't have to participate in it" is naive as all activities in EVE connect to and affect each other in some way.
- Malcanis' Law: "Whenever a mechanics change is proposed on behalf of GÇÿnew playersGÇÖ, that change is always to the overwhelming advantage of richer, older players." There are several variations on this... but the general idea is the same.
Mirr Aurilen wrote:Are there any Merc Corps that hire new bloods that you perhaps know of? I'm a personal fan of the Break-A-Wish Foundation (because they're really funny and offensive). They may not accept you... but they might know someone who will. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

Alright, this should get me going for a while longer. I'll definitely try to contact different Mercenary groups to see if they are willing to dispense any advice related to that line of work.
I'll also periodically check the mentioned forums. |

Oddly no-one has mentioned Pirate ships and Stealth bombers yet. Because frigates and small gunnery specializations aren't that much of a pain to cross-train, doing so will allow you to fly these types of ships well bonussed early on. While I would not recommend flying anything your wallet doesn't really allow, especially Stealth Bombers are not awefully expensive and very fun to fly in a gang, mercenary or not. There is absolutely no downside to crosstraining apart from the time investment. If you like the frigate class, crosstraining will simply get you more out of that class.
EDIT: I didn't read very well, and Covops was mentioned. Hell yes, Covops pilots are a great asset to any profession dealing mainly with pvp. |
