Very new to EVE. So far, it's absolutely stunning, both in its underlying premises and it's appearance. Inexhaustible.
So I'm working my way through the tutorials and all is going well until I hit the station agent scanning mission where I must use core probe scanners to locate a gravimetric site. The mission brief seems to indicate that I'm to look in the immediate system.
After a bit of looking, I locate several sites in the system - a couple are displayed as red circles, and a couple are shown as very small circles - almost dots, really. At this point, I'm stuck. No amount of re-positioning the probes and narrowing their focus seems to get me anywhere. The small red dots aren't "actionable". Also, I've seen some small green triangles that indicate training sites of some sort, but those don't offer anything either on the scan.
It's probably something dead bang obvious, but I don't see it. Thanks in advance for replies.

First, watch the youtube tutorial by CCP. http://youtu.be/heYfTA00Idg visual is better than wording
Green triangle = anomalies, those site hanging at space, on board scanning can find them, no probe required.
For probing 1. red sphere : ONLY ONE probe find a signal, and the signal is landed at the edge of the sphere 2. red circle : ONLY two probe find that signal, an the signal is landed at the circumference of the circle 3. duplicate signal : sometimes you find two RED DOTs with same ID, that means ONLY THREE probe find the signal, one dot is fake. 4. red dot : at least four probe find the signal, center the probes and diminish the radius of probe to pinpoint it 5. yellow triangle : signal above 25%, signature type is displayed, keep pinpoint it if in interested |

To see full info in your scan results, make sure you have cleared all filters. |

Also, Scanning is changing in 4 weeks with Odyssey.

It sounds like the fundamentals of how to scan aren't changing, just some things to streamline it are being added.
Each probe only knows the distance to the site from itself, and it will be somewhere on the surface of the sphere that's shown. Where those spheres overlap the site narrows down to the other symbols, until you get to a single dot. Then move probes closer, reduce range (for increased strength and better signal.) It takes a minimum of 4 probes to find a signature.
Also, it's worth noting, the results shown are affected by scan deviation. The site will appear to move around until you get the signal strength up, but be aware that the site itself is not moving, just the result.
And a final tip, a flat 4 (or 5) formation with your probes is the easiest to work with, except it's easy to forget that the site might be above or below your formation, so don't forget about your vertical axis. Maxim 34: If you're leaving scorch-marks, you need a bigger gun. |

All - thanks for the tips and advice. The YouTube tutorial recommendation was exactly what I needed. Went from fumbling about to nailing the mag and grav sites in short order. Now I've run into a different issue. Got the Radar site mission but discovered to my horror that I have no probes! This is either probe-less mission - which I doubt) or something has gone really wrong. I did recall all of them before I docked, so that's probably not the issue. Undocking and reconnecting to lost probes yields nothing.
Anyone else run into this? |

Exactly so - that was one of my problems. Once I learned to set the filters correctly, I got results. That, and using a 'throwing star' formation of the five probes that I am able to use at this time.
Thanks again... |

I assume you used the same Ship you used for the previous Mission. Look into your Ship's cargo. If you recall your Probes they land in your cargo and you have to reload them into your Probe Launcher.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I checked both ships. Started with an Ibis and was given a Bantam for the exploration series of career training missions. Neither ship has the probes in their respective cargo and/or drone bays. Likewise, hangar storage doesn't have them either. This one's got me stumped. |

After you've done your scanning, you have to recall your probes before you leave, or they'll be abandoned. You'll just have to buy more from the market now. |

also, recalling takes a while, you may have docked or jumped through a stargate before the probes were back. just buy a new set of Core Scanner Probes, they are cheap and should be available just about everywhere.

Ah, I see. I was probably a bit too hasty in getting back to dock. That explains it, I think. Learning that patience is definitely a virtue in the EVE universe.
Thanks for the advice. |
