If I understood this correct the only way to mine ice is with a mining barge and ice harvester or?

thx for the swift reply and feel a bit uncomfortable to mine ice in low sec with only the thin layer of paper that the mining barge is built of to protect my sweet little ass

Use a bay full of drones to protect you? I use five Hammerhead I for dealing with npc's when I'm mining.

No. Absolutely not. Horrible painful death. Get corpmates in big ships to provide cover.
Next question?

I didnt know you actually COULD mine ice in low-sec?
As far as I have been told, its only possible in high-sec, thus making the logistics a nightmare.

Ice fields are not exclusive to high sec. They are intrinsictly more difficult between the larger spawns and the risk of PvP in a barge, but the best ice is in lowsec and 0.0. Trick is getting barges in and out in one piece, which just depends on coordination.

I've mined solo in 01 space for hours, taking out several Cruiser spawns and escorts. The trick is Bring a jammer fitted in the Mid slot for the regional rats you'll be facing, but this is only a backup if they don't fall for the bait. Bait being your drones. Which I suggest you leave 2 out at all times, I use Warriors. Which I then Target the primary ship, Then launch the rest of my drones, mediums and target the escort ships leaving the cruiser for last since it has the least chance to hit the warriors. If the rats target one of your mediums imediately have it return to drone bay, then relaunch and send back into the fight. I've taken on two 55k cruisers with an escort of five 12k Frigates without taking any armor damage. -------------=============------------- *** If you're not flying with Hippies, you're not having FUN!! ***

Woah there! There's an infinite supply of ice in high sec space. Low-sec ice is better, but only in the sense that it gives you more ozone/heavy water/stront but you won't really need all that. Your main issue will be isotopes to begin with and you'll find plenty in high space. I'd recommend you buy any ozone/heavy/stront you need after you've mined for the isotopes because you are a sitting duck mining ice.
Remember the cycle is 8-10 mins long and if rats turn up, player or npc you have to warp away ... a solo barge can easily end up with only two-four blocks of ice in an hours mining when it has to warp a lot. That's not worth it.
What makes you want to ice-mine in low-sec?

Don't write off the Liquid ozone and heavy water. I've made millions more with the liquid Ozone compared to the Isotope mining... Most corps that mine Isotopes for themselves will eventualy need Liquid Ozone or Heavy water as the Empire "safe" ice is far more Isotope heavy than O3 or HW. There's a reason why the base price is much higher. -------------=============------------- *** If you're not flying with Hippies, you're not having FUN!! ***

This is true, but if you are mining for yourself then several low-sec blocks a week should provide you with enough ozone/hw. If you are mining for profit you may as well opt for jaspet or hem and cruiser mine since it's safer.

Getting a high yield from ice is challenging without a pos or good refining skills. You will need some time invested in refinery efficiency and possibly ice processing to make it truly worthwhile to refine it.
However selling unrefined ice may not be very profitable as you will have great difficulty shipping it anywhere, and since there will be a lot of ice-miners in the system in the same boat as you, this can push prices down as everyone sells 'on location'.
If you can get your skills up, or better yet get into a relationship with an individual or corp where they give you a good refinery deal on the product.

the other thing about mining ice in 0.0 is that pos refinerys have a very heavy bonus to ice refining so if you can only afford to set up a small pos refinery, ice mining is probably the way to go.

All you really need is a ship to tank the rats while you mine.
When I feel like ice or ore mining in 0.0 I just pull out the harpy, set it to orbit a distant asteroid, turn on the shield booster and let it go while I mine in peace. As long as you don't kill any of the NPC they won't respawn and retarget your barge. I usually pick a small cruiser spawn, as webbing frigs can be annoying to the harpy. _____________

How do you use a barge and do this at the same time? Do you have two accounts?

I find this very interesting, and would like to try it. What kind of drones does it require? What I'm really asking is, how far up do I need to my drone skills before I could try it?

Yes, I have several accounts. However, multiple accounts aren't necessary, just find a friend willing to help you out. _____________

I can only control 8 currently which provides me with 2 Warriors and 6 Hammerheads, thermal or Kinetic being the best "all round" damage dealer for most rats. ANd because I happen to own only that medium drone BPO :) 100 m3 drone bay allows me those and 3 Backup hammerheads. Worse Loss I suffered was 1 warrior :) Just be sure to watch what your drones do and monitor their health you'll do fine agains NPC's.
