Most Asteroid belts now are getting clogged with secure containers that have been anchored and possibly abandoned by the player.
I would think it would make sense for the anchor on a container to decay with time and to fail completely if the user does not access the can within a set time period say 3 weeks. The decay clock could be reset each time the user uses the container. This way cans that are no longer used will become unanchored and can be removed. This would remove those abandoned cans in the belts and allow for players to salvage some of them. Alternatively they could degrade due to neglect and finally pop like an old J can.
Another thing that could be done with the secure containers is to allow the giant ones to be linked together, forming an even bigger storage container construct. This would perhaps require a new skill, or more than one new skill. There should be a penalty of say 5% for each container added, so the first container in the construct retains 100% of its volume, the second added only gives an increase of 95% of its original volume and so on for a maximum of 6 containers the last only giving 70% of its original volume. Perhaps a mining module for a mid slot could be invented to allow ore to be moved to one of these larger constructs from further away again with a new skill required. Allowing the players to join together a number of Giant containers would assist in the ore theft debate as miners could build containers into a reasonable size negating the need to use a J can.
I am unsure how easy this would be for the programming team to implement but do feel it would add greatly to the game play.

Sounds like a plan
I like it, especially the 'link container' command would be nice since the giant cans are ... well... small. This makes you want to stay in one belt at a time though due to huge anchoring times/delays, might want implement another option like 'anchor container in conjuction with nearby unanchored containers' so it wont take ages to set up a mining op.
And a (corp)mail telling you when a container is <insert time here> old: 'DED (or w/e) has located an anchored container in <systemname> that has an out-of-synch anchoring, please re-anchor the container within 3 days or it might be lost forever, the bookmark has been added to your people and places'

Linked containers would be very useful! I'd love to have 20,000+ m^3 of secured space for mining.

Unanchor hacking skill, any secured container not used in the last 3 weeks (like the station containers).
2%/lvl one shot at a container.
You fly to the container and attempt to "borrow with the intent to return".
If successful the container is unanchored and u can scoop it. If unsuccessful the container is forever permanantly achored wrt to ur character. TotensBurntCorpse Likes EVE, Starfleet Command Series, Earth & Beyond, Anything Battlefield, MOHAA, Call of Duty.
