I propose we set the proper official pronunciation of "Gnosis" to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H91rPIq2mN4 "you can identify eve players by looking at their cars. Since they don't drive what they can't afford to lose."-á --áBienator II |

Considering there isn't a single Eve player alive that can pronounce Megathron, Anathema, Harbinger or Scythe (let alone spell the word "lose"), I think you're wasting your time. |

Unless we are trying to speak a dead language the 'g' is silent. We can guess, don't know for sure how it would be said in Ancient Greek. 'Agnostic' is the alpha-privative form, which makes the 'g' hard.
Gnosticism was considered a heresy and more or less suppressed by the Church between the 2nd and 14th century. St. Palamas might be the last real gnostic, though aspects of the practice are conserved in the inner parts of monasteries such as Mt. Athos and in Eastern Orthodoxy in general. Their is a great deal of revisionist new age acquisition and misunderstanding about it. The Philokalia and a set of other writings by Saints, 'desert fathers' and hermits might considered the core text, mostly from between the 2nd and 14th century. There are also some fragmented acquisitions of the teaching such as Gurdjieff's 4th Way. It is an esoteric or 'inner' acquisition of Christianity. Sufism has a similar relationship to Islam. Such inner teachings tend to undermine the exoteric authority of the religion and are so actively suppressed by that external authority, leading to things like mass extermination of Sufis in Turkey and such. Private sig. Do not read. |

Yes. My thoughts exactly. It's very simple, really. If you see Tengus on scan, they are ratting. If you see a shitload of Tengus, the Russians are blobbing. If you see Proteuses on scan, they will be on top of you in about a second. If you see a shitload of Proteuses, the big boys are having a goodfight. |

There seems to be a disagreement on how to pronounce Gnosis.
Some have their way of pronouncing it, others have theirs.
Some people...well they're most definitely wrong.
And that is what I have to say about that. This thread has so much content it may be 'Thread of the Year' and it is only January.

I must admit, while I am normally quite good with enunciating words and using the :correct: pronunciation I still sneak an extra 'r' into Harbinger. I just cannot stop myself from saying 'Harbringer' for some reason. |

It's "Nyo-sis" (not nigh-oh-sis), but rather like the "y" sound in "onion".
I guess you philistines pronounce "gnocchi" like "no key" as well? Say it with me: NYOKEY. |

It is a short O, I don't think the pronunciation exists in American English, probably because it isn't an American word Yes, we do say awperator here in the States. Do you have any other word with a short O? Upload something to soundcloud; this is what I have. Know-sis; Gnaw-sis; trying to shorten the -o in it. https://soundcloud.com/koishi555/gnosis
It's neither and both. The "o" is a short o but not as short as the English short "o". It's a little longer but not as long as the English long "o".
Therefore, it's not "knowsis" and neither is it "knawsis", but rather something similar to "nyuosis". Like I said before, it's like "gnocchi"; not "no key" or "knocky", but rather "nyuokey". |

Anathema is a Latin word...it's pronounced "Anna Themma", but in English we say "Uh-Nath-Emma"...like the band, hehe. The English version is wrong, but it's common enough to use it. It's not, however, "Anna Theema" or "Uh-Nath-Eema". |

Heh, as long as you don't pronounce gnocchi "no key". If you don't know what gnocchi are, disregard everything. If you order gnocchi and ask for "no key", I hope they spit in it.
