One of the major draws of shield-tanked ships for solo or small gang work is the ability to regenerate HP between engagements, or phases of an engagement.
Conversely roaming nullsec in an armour ship means you must either
- have logistics in your gang
- fit an armour repairer
- limp home after the first fight
Is this a good thing?
+ Maintains a distinct 'flavour' of armour tanking vs shield tanking
but
- Forces solo / small gang ships down an active tanking, or hybrid active / buffer route for armour fittings - Makes small gang armour setups more capacitor-dependent - Realistically forces small armour gangs to run zero or 2+ logistics
In the interests of promoting a wider variety of roaming setups, you could have armour HP regenerate very gradually over time - say 10-20% of the shield recharge rate.
- Armour would regenerate between fights or when travelling, but not significantly during engagements.
- HP Regeneration at this gradual rate would not compete / overlap with dedicated active tanking armour setups.
- Armour regen would open up genuinely new fitting options for many ships in small gang PVP

If this were to be applied would this not also require being applied to Structure as well for those that Hero Tank AKA Hull Tank? This would even the field on regens but I think your idea is worthy of a comment and a friendly bump.
That being said you could use Armour Rep bots to repair armour on said ships while in between engagements. Not completely without merit.

Structure tanking is not a real thing and I don't know any real men.

If you're dropping useful drones for ones that help you rep after the engagement, then you're making sacrifices shield buffer ships don't have to. Armour maintenance bots don't help the solo PVPer either.

The issue you are referring to isn't really about the passive regen.
It's the fact that in the 8 or so seconds it takes you to dock and undock you get a full shield refresh. Not posting on my main, and loving it.-á Because free speech.-á |

Have people fit logi drones as a second flight of drones in bay.
Use logi drones between fights to repair.
Problem = Solved.
Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings? |

You are asking for a specific buff for Armor tanking, but are omiting/ignoring the overall picture of tanking and balance. What are you willing to give up? How should other tanking forms be compensated?
Something to think about: given the net shield recharge amount scales with shield size and 1600 RS II have almost double the HP of LSE II, your rate of 10-20% of shield recharge rate would actually net to 20-40% of HP/s. Is this as intended? |

I don't like this statement.
Your entire assumption predicates that balance currently exists between armor and shield tanking. It doesn't. Shield has been better for years, and still is better.
And, for your education, 1600mm plates have no analogous size for shields. They are in a higher category, and are priced accordingly. They do have almost double the HP of an LSE. They also have more than twice the cost.
I am far from agreeing with the OP at all. Aside from the one point saying that armor tanking needs a buff. It does. Speed is arguably the first or second most important stat in the game. Trading that for sig radius, which isn't even in the top ten, is not remotely balanced. Not posting on my main, and loving it.-á Because free speech.-á |
