Not a Zbrush user, so take my comments with a grain (or ton) of salt:
The bas-relief is good, but maybe too clean. It looks... cold. Not the monochrome, but the lack of tiny imperfections.
The portrait cameo, on the other hand, I like rather a lot. The very imprefections warm it up and make it more... 'Human,' I guess is the word I'm looking for. Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

Very nice! Those are interesting images you're doing-- I definitely wasn't expecting to see baroque-ish decor designs. I'd agree with Silens, a little "dirtying down" with rougher textures would make the images look more lifelike. From the colors, they give the impression of being made of stone, so some stone texture might be nice. Or if it's very smooth, marble-like stone, some lighting to show the glossiness. Or possibly, coloring the images as if they're embossed metal, and adding some lighting for shadows and reflections.
Zbrush looks like it might be a natural mate for a 3D printer. Design up those wargaming miniatures and print them out, as we were discussing in this thread. |

Oh, excellent suggestion. A 2nd-hand decent-but-basic 3D printer shouldn't be too expensive... or maybe you cant rent some runs on someone else's printer.

Thanks for the feedback guys, appreciated, and those were just preliminary modelling to show basic form to the client, refinements and retouches of details, imperfections, texturework will be done later, cus I agree, it's way too symetrical to look close to natural. In any case, here's a picture of the drawing reference Im using for it: http://i40.tinypic.com/34gsjno.jpg
Now that you mention 3D printing, this work is for a company that produces stone decorations and sculptures for architecture firms, individual clients or city councils. They use 3 axes 3D printers to carve big blocks of stone with and use CAD programs like Zbrush to have the modeled objects sent to the printer and carved. Then when it's done we finish the detail work by hand and give it all the extra touches it needs to have grit.
Here's an example of a colleague's work printed in stone from a Zbrush model: http://forum.zbrush.fr/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=6598.0;attach=39422;image and the zbrush model: http://forum.zbrush.fr/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=6598.0;attach=39005;image |
