I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong section, I will gracefully accept a move if its necessary.
Just finished reading The latest devblog on Codebreaking and Archaeology And I had a thought. Why not use codbreakers as a combat module? here's how I propose it work: Devblog
When a codebreaker is activated on a target it is Considered a combat action (Red/Concord flag on a player not at war etc.)
Upon activation the hacker is presented with a screen(Example below) that shows the standard Eve Hotkey layout for modules with a "?" Which might represent computer nodes the that the target ship uses to control ship modules. (Most players throw their weapons in the F1 slot of these as an example etc.)
Example Im not an artist =P
At CCP's discretion the player will either play this new codebreaker minigame, or use something similar to an ECM cycle. If the target ship has a module in the selected slot, and the codebreaker attempt is successful, the module is taken "Offline" and must be reactivated. So it would be like playing "modular" "Battleship" with your targets Hotkey layouts. and a hit with a successful codebreaker attempt partially disables your target ship(Example 2).
Example 2
The mechanics should work differently for stacked modules, so perhaps a successful hacking attempt would "Unstack" a stacked group of weapons or simply stop their firing cycle (We have ECM to shutdown our enemies firing abilities, no need to layer over them!)
Side notes: For a little extra flavor perhaps ship scanners could reveal "Hot-spots" where players currently have modules. This should be considered a type of electronic warfare so on that note, large capital ships would be immune to it. and perhaps a Co-Processor mounted to a ship would provide additional defense against hacking attempts similar to capacitor batteries providing defense against neuts/vamps. a player can Actively defend against a codebreaker by moving his important modules around once in a while. When a player is being hacked, a codebreaker symbol shows up (Similar to webs/scrams etc.) it would not show the player which slot is being targeted, but it would give them the chance to rearrange if they are quick on their feet.
Discuss! I feel it has some potential and would give our Covie ops pilots a reason to look at the battlefield. or as an "Active" Defense in case they find themselves under attack.

I like to hope that modern, well-maintained, actively-piloted ships are better-protected against hacking attempts than a 4,000-year-old derelict space wreck.
Besides that, this seems like an inherently terrible, broken idea. Really broken. |

In terms of the eve backstory. you are talking about Super-intelligent Immortal beings who control Spaceships throughout their entire life with their mind. I would certainly hope they would be intimately involved enough with starship mechanics that they could influence a target ship.
And care to elaborate further on "Why" You think its "Broken"?

By your reasoning I'm able to delete your post just because I have an account in this forum. Maybe I should do it.

I imagine a covert ops hanging off the side applying codebreaking technology onto command ships on the batltefield, turning their boosts into a penalty. Don't try and replace or side-by-side ewar, come at it from a whole new perspective.
What if a hacker could reverse some modules, like command links, remote reps, etc? If you're driven to threaten others with harm or violence because of what they do in game, you can't separate fantasy from reality.-á That 'griefer/thief' is probably more sane than you are.-á How screwed up is that? |
