I haven't checked the price of current merc corps but last I price checked, it was 750 million for an all out war with the person I wanted to crush.
Sounds like they had a pretty good profit margin there. "Entitlement" is a euphemism for "I hate the way you play and it makes me cry like a baby". If you fantasize about being immoral it means you enjoy being immoral deep down. |

For the most standard empire wars, a fee of a few hundred million ISK works. Charge more for more difficult or specialized contracts. Money paid up front, unless you're just starting out and trying to build a reputation, then just the war fee gets paid up front. Whether or not you do a pay-per-kill system or not is up to you as a leader.
You will of course pay your own members, but how you do it is up to you. My preferred way is to split the money evenly among everyone who participated in a particular contract, though I do skew payments depending on activity ratios (but not performance). Some money gets left in reserve for station office fees, war fees, etc.
Oh, and a few hundred million is by no means a good profit margin, unless your target is a POS owned by a one-man defunct corporation. Any losses taken are the responsibility of members; they're not something you charge your employer for. If you have ten guys in a corporation, and charge 750 million for a week of war, that's 75 million per person per week at best.
You can make 75 million in half an hour in a C3 wormhole. Mercenary work is a hobby as much as it is employment. Of course, the formula shifts a bit for 0.0 mercenaries, and other large outfits. We've always been focused on empire space and wormholes, so that's the only thing I can really comment on. I wrote some true EVE stories! And no, they're not of the generic "my 0.0 alliance had lots of 0.0 fleets and took a lot of 0.0 space" sort. Check them out here:

By "all out war" these mercs generally mean "camp the undock of the nearest trade hub". Those are the hub-based outfits that are technically mercenaries, but they don't really charge for anything but the war fee anyway. They basically do it for the targets, and are an option for people who want to buy cheap market denial for their enemies. Everyone has a place, I guess. I wrote some true EVE stories! What's you asking is the reason why merc corps are generally very small. |

Pardon my earlier cynicism, my only experience with pr0 "mercs" has been of the hub-camping variety. And, for the record, they were paid more than the war-dec fee. CCP has no sense of humour. |
