I've been thinking that the map is a really usefull tool, but doesn't even begin to fulfill all of it's potential.
One of the things that could go a long way towards making it more flexible and usefull would be to allow players to create map overlays and share them.
For example, one could take the complex database that exists on the net, convert it into a file in a predefined (by CCP) XML format and then put that file into a specific directory. Then on the map, one would have a new category to color the stars by and it would have the name of the file (without the extension).
This could be used by Corps to share information on where there is good mining. It could be used by Alliances to subdivide it's space for hunting and mining priveleges.
It could be used to create an alliance map where it's possible to view claimed and contested terretory and not just sovreignity and have it viewable in game.
It could be used by a trader to mark his or her trade routes so he has an easy view of it on the map.
I'm sure players would come up with a lot of other different ways to make this usefull that I'd never think of.
Anyway I think this could add a lot to the game, both for huge alliances and also for the single player.
An additional feature that could be built in is to allow and automatic update (maybe caused by pressing a button next to the filter option). This could be done by having a line in the XML files that shows the location it can be found at, then when pressing the button the latest version is auto-magically fetched. But then this would only be icing on the cake.
Comments and ideas welcome.

That's an excellent idea.
As well as defining the XML structure so people could create overlays offline, CCP should also add a couple of annotation features to the Map view - allowing you to define custom labels/colours and apply them at will, and also allow you to add notes, and draw lines, arrows, etc. Then you can share the overlay if you wish, or just keep it in your own client.
All of this is client side so no lag at all.

I'm already halfway through developing such an application.

Wow, excellent. So the client already supports importing user-defined overlays?

No. I've written my own map generator.
Into that, I push killboard data. So starts light up red/green depending on recent kills/losses.

While an external application is nice, putting it ingame is what I'd really love to see.
That way it can be used much more easely in the game with setting waypoints, bookmarking places or doing other stuff. It's when things are integreated into a greater whole that they become most usefull.
Of course before one doesn't have the feature at all, an external application is a great alternative.

I like this, although I'd bet getting a way to modify it out of game is unlikely. But we could have a role like 'cartographer' which exists at both the corp and alliance level. That person could open the map, right click on a system, constellation, or region and mark it 'contested' or 'secret location of our tech 2 production facilities' or something. That data would automatically be uploaded to the server where any member of the corp or alliance could see it via some new radio button in the map. I suppose you could even have some rudimentary permission on it, like 'only CEOs in the alliance can see this overlay' or 'cartographers in corporation X has permissions to change the map overlay in Y constellation'.
It would be a great way to coordination logistics as well. Say a corp wants to ramp up for a war, so they start marking all enemy offices in empire, plus depots for their own corp. The members of that corp could stage ships and stuff in the depots, and make bookmarks and such for the enemy systems. ---
