Ganking is the art of going after lower-level players with massive superior force.
For example, if three battlecruisers jump and destroy your tiny frigate while you're autopiloting to a stargate, you've just been ganked !
Tackling is a tactic where a small fast ship 'tackles' a larger ship, so the large ship can't escape. Then the small fast ship's buddies show up and blow the crap out of the tackled ship.

Tackling involves warpscrambling to prevent the target from warping away, and webbing to prevent them from crawling over to the jump gate and leave the system. Webbing also helps your wingmen to catch up with the victim and shoot him from their optimal range. Some might argue that electronic warfare is part of the tackling job, but I'd say that EW requires too many slots to be effective, an EW ship is not capable of tackling. The key factor in tackling is speed. Enough speed to catch up with your target. Enough locking speed to assure you get the scrambler on before he warps. Enough speed to stay alive while orbitting, waiting for your buddies to finish him off.
Ganking is just another word for overkill. A highly efficient attack involving several ships against one or a few is a gank. Ganking kills are brutally fast, and the victim more than often has a zero chance of survival.

Tackling is just like tackling in American Football, your trying to stop the guy from being able to move. You do this by using warp scrams and webbers so he can be taken out easier. If your tackling in a frig your just trying to stop the ships propulsion. If your tackling in something larger you might use sensor dampners and other EW as well so that the guy your tackling doesn't have the range to shoot back at the ganking BS that you are tackling for.

Ganking can mean a few things. Often you'll hear less PVP inclined players that get their BS 1v1ed go 'OMG I GOT GANKED'. However, gank normally means:
Gank Setup: A ship set up to do damage, damage and nothing but instane damage.
Ganking: Destroying an enemy with a hugely overwhelming force.

Not really. "Ganking" is either setting up a ship full of damage mods, or when a single battleship jumps into a gate where there just happens to be a 75 ship blob... - Proud member of the [23].

Edited by: Jenny Spitfire on 30/10/2005 16:27:41 Dunno, my version of ganking is where I have many vs me, and I can only last for a few seconds before I mysteriously appear in my favourite station.
Tackling means cannon fodding, erm, I mean front line assault troopers. They fly in with small little ships using an almost well known setup with web stasis and warp disruptors to tackle and tickle the enemies battleships, frigates, cruisers or whatever so they can not warp away until your gank-mates comes next to you and make them appear in their favourite station in less than a few seconds.

gank = overwhelming force; be it fitting as many damage mods as possible to produce the overwhelming force, or just simple bringing as many ships as possible.

Edited by: capzyL on 02/11/2005 13:37:16 Ganking are in many games close to griefing (not sure about here though) but my version of ganking would be to repeated times hunt down a player and kill him just to be mean without serving a purpose (although its kinda hard to adapt that version to this game since you can often gain something from killing someone here)
Edit: Its not ganking if its even fights, the ganker has to have a large advantage.

In EVE ganking refers to -
A. Getting killed, ie. "I just got ganked at a gate." B. A ship set up for pure firepower and absolute minimum to no defense, ie. a Gankagheddon. ------------------------------------- You are all worthless, and weak.
